9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Simon Luis Hokayem, owner of Taveggia cake shop:
The Panettone, the traditional, actually, the name, it comes from the past: The prince of Milan, it was the court of Ludovico il Moro, where he has a chef working for him and he was doing actually the cake of Christmas. Then by doing the cake he burned it, so it was, all the products were ruined at that time. So to hide the problem he took all the powder for the bread, so he begin to play with the bread and putting inside some dry fruits just to get some sort of cake. And he presented to the prince, and the prince liked it so much and everybody made compliments. Then they realised it wasn''t the real cake, what he was doing for Christmas, so his name was Toni, the chef, so the prince told, thanks for the ''Pane of Toni'', and then it became the name Panettone, and the tradition began from that time.

ITALIANS RELISH 600 YEAR OLD CAKES
After six centuries the Panettone reigns supreme as Italy''s most famous Christmas cake.
Symbol of the city of Milan, the sponge-like cake, often filled with raisins and candied fruit, has never changed its mushroom-shape and toasted flavour.
There are several stories about the possible origin of the yuletide treat.
One holds that Toni, a cook for 15th century Milanese nobleman Ludovico il Moro, burned the cake he had prepared for Christmas.
To hide the problem, so the story goes, he decided to transform some bread dough into a cake by adding dry fruit.
Hence the name Panettone or Pane di Toni, Toni''s bread.
What is perhaps more likely is that Panettone evolved from the ancient Pan Grande, a popular Christmas treat as far back as the 10th century.
According to historians, this simple bread was eaten to simulate the Christian communion rite: broken and offered to each family member.
As time passed, the dry loaves were given a more appealing taste by adding raisins and candied fruit.
Today Panettone has dozens of regional varieties, from Genoa''s Pan Dolce to nut-filled, chocolate-topped Panettone from the region of Abruzzi in southern Italy, and the golden Pan d''Oro of Venice.
The Taveggia cake shop in Milan is among the most prestigious pastry stores in Italy.
The building, situated in the centre of the city, is a unique example of Milanese Art Deco.
Taveggia''s traditional recipe can be traced back to the 19th century when General Radetzky bought Panettone at Taveggia''s for the Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph.
Widely known throughout Europe, Panettone is particularly enjoyed over Christmas in Greece, Sweden and Luxembourg.

We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This being Italy, we also tried to prioritize meals, sampling everything from pizza to risotto, and cappuccinos to aperitivos. The following travel guide will highlight 20 things to do when you visit Milan, Italy
1) Milan Catherdral (Il Duomo - Duomo di Milano - Domm de Milan)
2) Il Duomo Terrace
3) Italian Breakfast - Cappuccino and sweet Italian pastries
4) Sforza Castle - Castello Sforzesco
5) The Galleria - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
6) Risotto alla Milanese - Milan style risotto
7) Street Art around Porta Ticinese
8) Colonne di San Lorenzo - Columns of San Lorenzo Roman Ruins
9) Boat tour down the canal (linea traghetti gaggiano milano)
10) Dine along the canal in Milan's Navigli District
11) Aperitivo drinks and buffet - Apéritifs and digestifs
12) Shopping in Milan down Via Torino
13) Visiting Chinatown for some Chinese food
14) Ride a bicycle in Milan like a local
15) Pizza al taglio (pizza al trancio) Italian pizza by the slice
16) Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio containing relics of the 3 Magi
17) Duomo Museum covering the cathedrals history in-depth
18) New City Views with a hop-on-hop-off bus pass
19) Museum of Natural History - Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano
20) Night views of Milan nearby Il Duomo
Our trip to Milan, Lombardy was part of the Blogville project where we stayed in a local apartment and experienced all of the best cultural activities, museums, restaurants, arts and entertainment the city has to offer. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure.
20 Things to do in Milan Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete.
So we've sat down at a little cafe and we're going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries.
Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city's most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's very last sculpture.
For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be.
So we just found a local little restaurant and we're going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese.
The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house.
Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city's canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system.
Milan's Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco.
So we've gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet.
And that's all for our visit to Milan. We hope this video will give you some cool ideas of sights and attractions to check out.
This is part of our Travel in Italy series showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods & Italian cuisine.

Voglio Ballare Con Te
Déjame bailar contigo
Yo, Baby K!
Faccio un tuffo sotto il sole
Fa già un caldo che si muore
Questa estate non si dorme
Me la bevo come un cocktail
Questo ritmo che mi muove
I problemi sono altrove
Le cuffie sulla testa
Viaggio sotto l'ombrellone
Bevo birra col limone
Senza ghiaccio per favore
Andiamo non so dove
Diplomiamoci in hangover
Scottiamocii la pelle poi cambiamoci colore
Prendiamoci le stelle che il resto non ci serve
Almeno fino a settembre
Notti sempre troppo corte
Yo, Baby K!

Milano - Italy
Book Your Hotel in Milano:
Milan is a city in Italy and the capital of the region of Lombardy and of the province of Milan. The city proper has a population of about 1,300,000, while the urban area is the fifth largest in the European Union with an estimated population of 4,300,000 million. The Milan metropolitan area, by far the largest in Italy, is estimated by the OECD to have a population of 7,400,000 million.
The city was founded under the name of Mediolanum by the Insubres, a Celtic people. It was later captured by the Romans in 222 BC, and the city became very successful under the Roman Empire. Later Milan was ruled by the Visconti, the Sforza, the Spanish in the 1500s and the Austrians in the 1700s. In 1796, Milan was conquered by Napoleon I and he made it the capital of his Kingdom of Italy in 1805.[4][5] During the Romantic period, Milan was a major cultural centre in the Europe, attracting several artists, composers and important literary figures. Later, during World War II, the city was badly affected by Allied bombings, and after German occupation in 1943, Milan became the main hub of the Italian resistance. Despite this, Milan saw a post-war economic growth, attracting thousands of immigrants from Southern Italy and abroad.
An international and cosmopolitan city, 13.9% of Milan's population is from abroad. The city remains one of Europe's main transportational and industrial hubs, and Milan is one of the EU's most important centres for business and finance, with its economy (see economy of Milan) being the world's 26th richest by purchasing power, having a GDP of $115 billion. The Milan metropolitan area has Europe's 4th highest GDP: € 241.2 billion (US$ 312.3 billion) in 2004. Milan also has one of Italy's highest GDPs (per capita), about €35,137 (US$ 52,263), which is 161.6% of the EU average GDP per capita. In addition to this, Milan is the world's 11th most expensive city for expatriate employees. Milan has also been classified as being the 28th most powerful and influential city in the world.
Milan is recognised as a world fashion and design capital, with a major global influence in commerce, industry, music, sport, literature, art and media, making it one of GaWC's major Alpha world cities. The Lombard metropolis is especially famous for its fashion houses and shops (such as along Via Montenapoleone) and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in the Piazza Duomo (reputed to be the world's oldest shopping mall). The city has a rich cultural heritage and legacy, and has a unique cuisine (it is home to numerous famous dishes, such as the Panettone Christmas cake and the risotto alla Milanese). The city has a particularly famous musical, particularly operatic, tradition, being the home of several important composers (such as Giuseppe Verdi) and theatres (such as the Teatro alla Scala). Milan is also well-known for containing several important museums, universities, academies, palaces, churches and libraries (such as the Academy of Brera and the Castello Sforzesco) and two renowned football teams: A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale Milano. This makes Milan one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, with over 1.914 million foreign arrivals to the city in 2008.The city hosted the 1906 World Exposition and will host the 2015 Universal Exposition.
Inhabitants of Milan are referred to as Milanese (Italian: Milanesi or informally Meneghini or Ambrosiani). The city is nicknamed by Milan´s inhabitants the moral capital. ( source Wikipedia )
