* Kalalau Trail (with drone!) - Top 10 most dangerous hikes? KAUAI (06:00) (wrj56)
(c) William Jans (*please subscribe so I can create more!) Join Vancouver photographer / adventurer William Jans' wee jaunt on the amazing Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast in Kauai. The start date of Dec 8 was vexed with both a Flash Flood warning and Tsunami warning. Both must have abated since hikers were allowed to continue. Hiking in winter means MUDDY! But this is still a great adventure. If you choose to do this, please be respectful of these lands deemed sacred by the Hawaiian and of course be prepared (!) and heed warnings and pay for permits too of course! (*note this is (c) William Jans. Do not copy or repost any without permission).
Filmed, edited and created by William Jans with 1 drone, 4 video cameras and 1 pro DSLR camera for stills. All gear and no clothes = 1 stinky William.
Credits at the end to thank the great new friends I met along the way. Some of these amazing folks were kind enough to participate and some were super kind in loaning me battery chargers when some of my many batteries went kaput.
Thanks for helping this get more than the 4800 views goal on this! (that is 10% of 48,000 footsteps it took to complete this 37km trip).
This looks kind of Wow on big screen if you have :-)
Notes / Disclaimers:
- This is not all that dangerous if you are careful. Some do run (portions) of this trail out and back (I would like to do that too).
- Hawaiians I encountered described the many yahoos going at this glibly with no respect for the dangers, so requested I show the risks to mitigate everyone thinking this is merely a walk in the park.
- There is distortion from wide angle shots looking down at my feet that make it seem more sheer than it is. To better assess the pitch, please look at the other images in the footage (including stills) that show the drop-off accurately.
- Flash floods and ocean surf have reputedly taken more lives than falls, so be wary in crossing or considering playing in the water.
Thanks for watching and I hope you might check out my other videos or full shows too! They have been live shows in Canada only this far, but I am creating *Streaming versions for 2017! If 80,000 Canadians enjoyed them, I hope other citizens of of other countries might like them too.If you subscribe here, I will add clips to announce dates when set.
Running the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai
The Kalalau Trail leads 11 miles along the rugged Nā Pali Coast on the north shore of the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The Trail traverses 5 lush valleys, above towering cliffs, before ending at Kalalau Beach where it is blocked by sheer, fluted pali. Most will take between 2-3 days to finish the trail. Our plan was to travel fast and light, running the entire 22 mile return trip in roughly 8 hours. Read my full trip report including map on my website at:

Kauai: The Kalalau Trail is An Epic Adventure.
In this video, I hike into Kalalau for my Birthday, wake up and hike back out!.I encounter some nasty weather and a trail washout, but it was a blast! The Napali Coast is one of the most beautiful places on earth and this hike is one of my favorites of all time.
Permits are required for this trail. Do not attempt to hike this without permits and the proper transportation to and from the trail. You can be fined heavily without them.

The Kalalau Trail, Kauai, Hawaii - Behind the Shot
Located on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the Kalalau Trail offers some of the most stunning views of the Pacific ocean, beautiful ridges, untouched beaches and serene waterfalls that cascade to the valley floor. To top it off, the Kalalau Trail is located along the iconic Nā Pali Coast. Though these breathtaking views make it a destination photographers can’t ignore, following in the footsteps of ancient Hawaiians is more difficult than you would imagine.
In this Behind the Shot video, Ryan and Ford adventure to Hawaii to capture the spectacular landscapes on the Nā Pali Coast on the Kalalau Trail. But what they didn’t know is how strenuous, humid and dangerous it would be to get the perfect shot.

Kalalau Trail - Na Pali Coast Hike
The entire Kalalau Trail is a challenging 11 miles long, but most people opt for the first two miles in and out to Hanakapiai Beach as shown in this video.
This video shows our second time hiking the trail. On this day, the trail was particularly muddy.

Disclaimer:
For those who are traveling to Kauai and are thinking about hiking the Kalalau Trail, I've decided you need fair warning...don't let the gorgeous scenery fool you....this is an extremely intense trail!
I've thru-hiked the AT, and never in any of those 2200 miles did I feel the same sense of danger that I did on this trail. It continually rolls around cliff edge after cliff edge over steep sides that drop 200'+ down to a lot of rocks and the Pacific Ocean. In a lot of places, one misstep would be disastrous. That being said, Kalalau beach is incredible! You won't find a more secluded, rewarding beach on the island. I absolutely recommend this trail, but I also recommend that those who do it be in good physical shape and have a minimal fear of heights. Enjoy!

A Hawaiian Backpacking Adventure: Kalalau Trail, Kauai
Kalalau Trail to Hanakapiai Falls in HD!- Na pali Coast - Kauai, Hawaii
The Kalalau Trail is a trail along the Nā Pali Coast of the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. The trail is very strenuous and runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island's north shore from Keʻe Beach to the Kalalau Valley. An experienced, very fit hiker can complete the trail in about a day, but most people require two days and will camp along the trail. At this time camping is only permitted at Hanakoa Valley (6 mile mark) and Kalalau Beach.
The trail is located in the Nā Pali Coast State Park and access is controlled in the cause of conservation. A limited number of permits are issued for camping in Kalalau Valley every year. In spite of the efforts of the state of Hawaiʻi, many people camp at Kalalau Beach without permits.
The trail starts on the north shore of the island, where the main highway ends at Keʻe Beach. The first two miles (3 km) of the trail are moderately strenuous and open to the public. It is one mile uphill and one mile downhill. This portion of the trail leads to Hanakapiai stream and beach. The trail beyond Hanakapiʻai used to be only open to those with camping permits or with day use permits. As of January 1, 2012 hikers are now permitted to day hike to Hanakoa Valley which is 6 miles from the trail head. From Hanakoa you can then hike about 1/2 mile to Hanakoa Falls which is a large spectacular waterfall, better than the falls at Hanakapiai. Be aware that the trail to Hanakoa Falls is not well maintained and sometimes difficult to follow. The trail begins after the Hanakoa stream crossing, just before the covered shelter.
Kalalau Trail, Kauai, Hawaii
Kalalau trail on the Na Pali Coast is an eleven mile hike in to Kalalau Beach. This video is of a small section of the most questionable part of the trail. It was quite anxiety inducing on the way in and barely easier to swallow on the way out.

DEATH at Hanakapi'ai Beach (Napali Coast - Kalalau Trail - Kauai Hawaii) *MATTHEW CHANNEL HD*
Just after the river at the end of Mile 2 on the Kalalau Trail, Napali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii is Hanakapi'ai Beach. It is known for it's strong currents and many deaths etched into a piece of wood as you approach. Please do not swim here. May God bring peace to the family of Janet Ballesteros.
Kalalau Trail - Hiking the Napali Coast of Kauai, Camping on the Beach, Waterfalls, Ep. 7
After getting permits for the Napali Coast State Park a few months in advance, we flew to Kauai to hike the famous Kalalau Trail. The trail is completely isolated and there is no access by car. It is along the coast and is one of the most beautiful and most difficult hikes we have ever done. It is 11 miles from the trailhead to the beach where you can camp, then 11 miles back, making the total 22 miles.
Upon arriving on Kauai we had a few basic supplies and spent the first day renting a cooking stove and mattress pads, as well as grocery shopping for our 3 days on the trail. We arrived at the trailhead the next day and started the trek at 8:13am. We stopped very little the whole way, and arrived at the waterfall / beach camping spot at 4:23pm. The isolation and difficulty made this a truly memorable experience, and certainly lived up to the expectations.
This is our last stop in the United States. We fly to Asia next, starting in southern Thailand to rock climb in Railay and Tonsai.
