WARI Lords of the Ancient Andes - The Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas - Unravel Travel TV
The Wari civilization formed in the wake of a late-sixth-century drought that ravaged the central Andean region of what is today Peru and parts of adjacent countries. It was a new cultural experiment that, over the next four centuries, produced a society of such unprecedented complexity that many today regard it as South America's first empire. As predecessors of the Inca Empire, which fell to Spanish forces after 1532, the Wari had no previous examples of expansionist states to draw upon and thus represent a major development in Andean civilization.
Wari: Lords of the Ancient Andes, arriving at the Kimbell in June 2013, explores the Wari accomplishment through some 140 artworks in all major media in which they worked—polychrome ceramics, ornaments made of precious metals or colorful mosaics, sculptured wood and stone objects, and textiles of striking complexity. Together, these works paint a picture of the Wari state and offer insights into their expansion strategies.
Unlike their Maya contemporaries, the Wari never developed a written language. Thus, modern opinion about their achievement is based exclusively on their artwork and other material remains. In the absence of writing, the artworks that circulated throughout Wari society acted as vehicles of communication, recording and preserving the way in which the Wari regarded themselves, nature, and the divine realm. Many of the Wari's greatest artistic accomplishments are realized in small, portable items—such as a Bag with Human Head—which could be transported across the Andean region, spreading the Wari culture to diverse and distant communities. It is through these images that we are able to gain access into the values and beliefs that shaped Wari society and contributed to its imperial expansion.
The exhibition is organized in four thematic sections. The Gift of Food and Drink presents vessels reconstructed from a three-ton buried deposit of deliberately shattered ceramics that may represent an offering of wares used in official feasts. Such feasts were lavish affairs with food and chicha (native corn beer) and apparently were a major element of Wari statecraft. They allowed Wari hosts to build prestige, assert authority, and indebt guests, since, then as now, gifts of any kind are rarely free. Wari feasts may have capitalized on the Andean belief that the world exists due to the interaction of two forces harmonized through the mutual dependence that reciprocity creates.
Wari: Lords of the Ancient Andes is only the second exhibition in the world to be devoted to the arts of the Wari Empire, and the first of its kind in North America. Bringing together objects from public and private collections all over the world, including several objects that have never been seen outside the countries in which they now reside, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience an extraordinary civilization in great depth and detail.
This exhibition is organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. It is supported in part by the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Fort Worth is the second-largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area, which is the 4th most populous metropolitan area in the United States.
The city of Fort Worth was established in 1849 as an army outpost on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. Fort Worth has historically been a center of the longhorn cattle trade. It still embraces its Western heritage and traditional architecture and design. USS Fort Worth (LCS-3) is the first ship of the United States Navy named after the city.
Fort Worth is home to the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and several world-class museums designed by internationally known contemporary architects. The Kimbell Art Museum, considered to have one of the best art collections in Texas, is housed in what is widely regarded as one of the outstanding architectural achievements of the modern era. The museum was designed by the American architect Louis Kahn, with an addition designed by world-renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano opening November 2013. Also of note is the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, designed by Tadao Ando. The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, designed by Philip Johnson, houses one of the world's most extensive collections of American art. The Sid Richardson Museum, redesigned by David M. Schwarz, has one of the most focused collections of Western art in the U.S., emphasizing Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, designed by famed architect Ricardo Legorreta of Mexico, engages the diverse Fort Worth community through creative, vibrant programs and exhibits.
The city is stimulated by several university communities: Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan, University of North Texas Health Science Center, and Texas A&M University School of Law, and many multinational corporations, including Bell Helicopter, Lockheed Martin, American Airlines, BNSF Railway, Pier 1 Imports, XTO Energy (relocated to Houston in 2017) RadioShack.

On Location: Teatro de la Rosa (by Meacham Middle School, Fort Worth, TX)
Students from all areas of Fort Worth, Texas are learning that the theatre can be a way to make their voices and opinions heard. Under the direction of Rob Bosquez, members of the Artes de la Rosa Teen Troupe at the Rose Marine Theatre are encouraged to write and perform plays. Through these original plays the teens are able to explore and share their problems and the concerns they face in and out of school.
Teatro de la Rosa's Teen Troupe is a group of a dozen teenage actors, best known for their award winning, cutting edge play productions. Troupe members create original storylines based on real world issues and themes they find personally meaningful. They also participate in all the various stages of production, from writing the scripts to designing costumes and building sets.
Theater is an art form where actors perform stories in front of an audience, using a combination of speech, gestures, music, dance, and sound to bring the story to life. Theater can be dated back to 2500 B.C., and is rooted in the human tradition of storytelling. Most forms of theater include the key storytelling elements of dialogue, setting, character, and plot.
Fort Worth, Texas, has a proud western heritage dating from cattle drives of the late 1800s to the stockyards of the 1900s. Today, the western theme is continued in the Stockyards area of north Fort Worth which is a popular tourist destination. In addition to the Stockyards, the Northside neighborhood houses the historic Rose Marine Theater and a thriving Hispanic community. Fort Worth is also known for its rich arts district that includes the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum, and The Modern Art Museum.
From 2008-2010, nineteen schools from across the United States created videos as part of the On Location program. A media studio on wheels visited each school for two weeks and provided students the gear and training to tell the story of the arts in their community.
From go-go music in Washington DC, to gullah woodburning in Beaufort, South Carolina, to modern dance in Berkley, Michigan, the arts of a community can be as different as it's geography.
The Kennedy Center traveled the country to help students tell the story of the arts in their community, and the result is a video collection reflecting a rich diversity of local artists and art forms across the United States.
The videos in this series were scripted, produced and edited by students using professional equipment, under the supervision of Kennedy Center teaching artists.
