Welcome to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
Ft. Lauderdale’s “Central Park” was gifted to the city by Hugh Taylor Birch for whom this urban oasis is named.
The ocean-side city of Fort Lauderdale has a population density of 4,761 people per square mile. However, residents are fortunate to have their own slice of wilderness amid the highly developed Miami metro area. Hugh Taylor Birch is the city’s own Central Park, complete with gopher tortoises and boat access from the intracoastal waterway. It’s easy to see why Hugh Taylor Birch wanted to preserve his estate for future generations to enjoy—it’s an oasis perfect for relaxation and exercise. The park is a vibrant center for the community of Fort Lauderdale, and residents take pleasure in activities from rollerblading to reading under the shade of palms and oaks.
Visitors can access the beach via the pedestrian tunnel under A1A. Picnic areas overlook the channel; pavilions with water and electricity are available for rental. A group/youth campground is available to organized groups. The Terramar Visitor Center features displays regarding the area's natural and cultural history.

Things To Do In Fort Lauderdale - Ft Lauderdale Things To Do 2
Wondering what to do today in Ft Lauderdale? Visit
In the meantime here's some great ideas for things to do in Fort Lauderdale.
Here's a quick video to give you a few ideas.
And if you're looking for more ideas on what to do and where to go when you're in Ft Lauderdale, be sure to stop by our website at FtLauderdaleVideoGuide.com.
You can even sign up for our weekly email alert so you'll know where to go and what to do in Fort Lauderdale every weekend. Your Things To Do In Fort Lauderdale guide!
In the meantime, here's a short list to get your wheels turning on things to do in Fort Lauderdale:
1. Rent a jet ski or wave runner. You've seen them before. They're little hauling asterisk, one man or two man boats, made for fun in the sun. And this is one of those things to do that everyone in Fort Lauderdale looks forward to doing every now and then!
2. Rent a paddle board which is basically very long and wide surfboard. It's made long and wide so it's easy to stand up. You'll use a long handled paddle to paddle around and get a little exercise. Or you could just lay there in the water and soak up some sun too. That, of course, is a Fort Lauderdale Things To Do tradition!
3. Go snorkeling! Very relaxing and exciting at the same time because you never know what you're going to see or find off Fort Lauderdale Beach. Even the kids can enjoy it in the shallows. But make sure you keep a close eye on the kids and make sure they're wearing the proper safety gear! And as a little tip, let me tell you this ... get yourself some GOOD snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel and fins). Don't buy the el-cheapo brands because it will only take enjoyment out of the experience. If you spend a few dollars extra to get the BETTER gear you'll be glad you did once you're in the water!
4. Go scuba diving! This is one of the greatest sports in Fort Lauderdale! And don't worry if you don't have your own scuba gear, there are plenty of dive shops in and around Ft Lauderdale Beach that will be glad to rent you the gear you need. Fort Lauderdale has some incredible reefs to explore just offshore and there are plenty of dive boats around whether you're interested in going out with just 1 buddy or going out with a full dive crew. Just remember, never go alone, right? RIGHT!
5. Wind Surfing is another water sport you might want to give a try. It's requires quite bit more coordination than paddle boarding but it can be much more exhilarating once you get the hang of it! You'll see wind surfers off Fort Lauderdale Beach on just about any given day there's a wind blowing.
5. Deep Sea Fishing in Fort Lauderdale is something you absolutely want to experience at some time in your life. It should be right up there on top of your Things To Do list! You can charter a local fishing boat to take you out with your family and friends or you can go out with a whole group (other Fort Lauderdale Vacationers) on one of the local drift fishing boats.
6. Have you ever toured a city by WATER TAXI? You can in Ft Lauderdale! Check out our website at FtLauderdaleVideoGuide.com/daytime-activities and we'll provide a listing of water taxi stops so you can see some of the local spots where you'll be able to hop on board a local water taxi.
7. Take a Fort Lauderdale sightseeing cruise on one of the local boats like the Jungle Queen or Captain Joes Tour Boat. Again, check out our site at FtLauderdaleVideoGuide.com under the daytime activities tab for more information.
8. Take a tour of Fort Lauderdale Beach and the Las Olas shopping, dining and art district by catching a ride on the local Fort Lauderdale Beach Trolley.
9. In the mood for a little gambling? You could go for a little fast action at the local horse track or the maybe the dog track. Or play some slots or poker at the Hollywood Hard Rock Casino, or head over to Dania to bet on Jai Lai. Yep, there's plenty to do here in the Fort Lauderdale area. ... and yes, you can bet on it!
10. Are you a golfer? Play a round of golf on a few of the best golf courses in South Florida! Fort Lauderdale Golf Courses are among the best in Florida. Check out our site for more info on local golf courses.
11. Getting dark out? Be sure to check out our site for a list of some of the Best Restaurants in Fort Lauderdale! We've got a video up now on some of the best steak restaurants in Ft Lauderdale and we'll be listing other top restaurants in the area ASAP!
12. And of course, when the sun goes down here in Fort Lauderdale, there are still plenty of things to do. We'll list several of the most popular Fort Lauderdale Nightclubs, Bars and Hot Spots in the area where you can dine, drink, dance and relax. There are plenty of bars, pubs and taverns in and around Fort Lauderdale.
You'll never run out of Things To Do In Fort Lauderdale!

Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. However, development of the city did not begin until 50 years after the forts were abandoned at the end of the conflict. Three forts named Fort Lauderdale were constructed; the first was at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend, in what is now known as the Sailboat Bend neighborhood, and the third near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina. The forts took their name from Major William Lauderdale,
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.0 square miles (93.2 km²), 31.7 square miles (82.1 km²) of which is land and 4.3 square miles (11.1 km²) of which is water (11.91%). Fort Lauderdale is known for its extensive network of canals; there are 165 miles (266 km) of waterways within the city limits.
The city of Fort Lauderdale is adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, includes 7 miles (11 km) of beaches.
