The Leonard P. Zakim (/ˈzeɪkəm/) Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge (or Zakim Bridge) is a cable-stayed bridge across the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. It is a replacement for the Charlestown High Bridge, an older truss bridge constructed in the 1950s. Of ten lanes, using the harp-style system of nearly-parallel cable layout, coupled with the use of cradles through each pylon for the cables, the main portion of the Zakim Bridge carries four lanes each way (northbound and southbound) of the Interstate 93 and U.S. Route 1 concurrency between the Thomas P. Tip O'Neill Jr. Tunnel and the elevated highway to the north. Two additional lanes are cantilevered outside the cables, which carry northbound traffic from the Sumner Tunnel and North End on-ramp. These lanes merge with the main highway north of the bridge. I-93 heads toward New Hampshire as the Northern Expressway, and US 1 splits from the Interstate and travels northeast toward Massachusetts' North Shore communities, crossing the Mystic River via the Tobin Bridge.
The bridge and connecting tunnel were built as part of the Big Dig, the largest highway construction project in the United States. The northbound lanes were finished in March 2003, and the southbound lanes in December. The bridge's unique styling quickly became an icon for Boston, often featured in the backdrop of national news channels, to establish location, and included on tourist souvenirs. The bridge is commonly referred to as the Zakim Bridge or Bunker Hill Bridge by residents of nearby Charlestown.

BOSTON DRIVING - Thomas P. Tip O'Neill Tunnel, Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge - BIG DIG
Anyone who's ever driven around Boston knows that the roadways are frequently choked with traffic. On this particular voyage, I was following Route 93 North, driving through the Thomas P. O'Neill Tunnel and onto the Leonard Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.
It was just before noon, so the traffic was nonexistent. As soon as we enter the Thomas P. O'Neill Tunnel, the roadway gets a bit rough and you'll notice some shaking.
There have been numerous reports of poor quality on many of the Big Dig sights, with subpar materials used and shoddy construction practices employed.
Although I didn't see any blatant evidence of this, it will be interesting to see how long this project holds up without significant maintenance.
Once inside the Thomas P. O'Neill Tunnel, the pavement begins to smooth out and the ride is quite pleasant. Some of the bends in the tunnel are a bit sharp, requiring motorists to tap their brakes. Although the speed limit was posted at 45MPH, most cars appeared to be exceeding that.
As the tunnel comes to an end, daylight appears and the apex of the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge comes into view. The Zakim Bridge pavement is quite smooth and the project is architecturally stunning. Up close, the cables of the Zakim Bridge appear much larger than I previously thought. Looking towards the sky, the cables create a cathedral-like effect.
The Zakim Bridge has brought lots of positive press to Boston, and quite literally changed the city skyline. It's noteworthy appearance serves to make all residents of the Bay State proud.

A scary moment on the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston as a tractor trailer slid through icy roads. Massachusetts was just one of many states hit with a barrage of snow today.

Storrow Drive - Massachusetts
Storrow Drive is a major cross town expressway in Boston, Massachusetts, running south and west from Leverett Circle along the Charles River. It is a parkway— it is restricted to cars, and trucks and buses are not permitted on it. The road legally known as James Jackson Storrow Memorial Drive officially ends at its eastward junction with Route 28 and continues as Embankment Road, part of Route 28.
Boston drivers use the route for quick access to downtown locations. Westbound Storrow Drive has a junction with the Harvard Bridge (Route 2A, or Mass. Ave). It passes along the northern edge of Boston University until it reaches a partial junction with the Boston University Bridge (Route 2), where it becomes Soldiers Field Road.
Both Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road are maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and are part of the parkway system interconnecting the Emerald Necklace in Boston and Brookline. Together with Memorial Drive and the Cambridge Parkway, Storrow Drive is also part of the Charles River Basin Historic District (listed in the National Register of Historic Places). Prior to 1989, Storrow Drive also carried the U.S. Route 1 designation. (U.S. Route 1 is now routed along Interstate 93).
The Famous Boston Bridge!
The Famous Boston Bridge
This bridge has been seen from the air, from the side, from down on the lower streets below the bridge but I have yet to see any clip or video specifically showcasing the bridge itself. My family and I were coming out of the tunnel on Rte 93 heading North. The tunnel is part of the famous Big Dig project.
I am always in awe of this new monumental addition to the city and this time, I caught it on video.
Enjoy this video and know that this famous bridge deserved its own little movie.
