What did Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper really look like? | DW Documentary
Leonardo's famous painting The Last Supper hides a secret: only 20 percent of the original work is still visible.
In the style of a thriller, the documentary attempts to reconstruct what it originally looked like. Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of the Renaissance Man. May 2019 marks the 500th anniversary of his death. The artist created world-famous works such as the fresco The Last Supper - perhaps the most famous. It is still in its original setting, on the wall of the dining room of the former Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The painting, which is 4.60 meters high and 8.80 meters wide, has been undergoing restoration for the last 19 years. But the restorers now know that only 20 percent of the original is visible today. So what did something that is the focus of so many legends originally look like? Our investigation also takes us to the small Belgian abbey of Tongerlo, where a mysterious copy of da Vinci's work has been discovered. It is a painting on canvas that could have been commissioned from da Vinci’s workshop by the French King Louis XII. It has perhaps brought the researchers a step closer to the truth.

The da Vinci puzzle: Restoring The Last Supper - BBC News
In the spring of 1999 a small team of experts, led by the renowned Italian art restorer Pinin Brambilla, concluded the mammoth task of restoring Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, The Last Supper.
Da Vinci had been commissioned to paint the fresco on a wall in Milan's convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in 1498. But due to his poor choice of materials, paint had begun to flake off even during his lifetime. Brambilla's restoration involved removing five layers of paint from previous botched restorations and restoring key features and objects. The painstaking job of cleaning, dabbing and repainting the four-and-a-half metre high fresco cost millions of dollars and took Pinin and her colleagues more than 20 years.
Now in her 90s, Pinin Brambilla, who still works in her studio in Milan, told Witness about this labour of love that consumed half of her professional life.

Hi, my name is Sarah and I'm one of the licensed guides of Leonardoamilano.com. I will share with you my passion for Milan, a city full of energy and cultural treasures, like the Last Supper.
This incredible painting was commissioned to Leonardo by the Dominican monks who owned the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery. Leonardo took four years to complete it, but the result was astonishing. Leonardo managed to represent perfectly the tempest of emotions created by the unexpected announce of Christ: One of you will betray me. It's like being there, I can assure you, as a tour guide I've seen it so many times yet it always moves me, because it's like a frozen emotional explosion and it has a cinematographic quality that perfectly suits our modern sensibility.
The Last Supper summarizes in itself all the various aspects of the genius of Leonardo. For example his absolute attention to detail is expressed in the realism of even the smallest objects, like the food or the crisps of the table cloth. You can find his deep knowledge of the human nature in the different emotions he put in the faces and gestures of the Apostles, rage, pain, surprise, incredulity. And try to get the subtle way in which he paints the relationship between Christ and Judas, the only two people in that room knowing the truth about the traitor, and therefore united by this painful awareness. There are so many layers of meaning and symbols and details that make it a masterwork I could go on for hours.
But beware: if you haven't booked your tickets well in advance, there is little possibility you can get to see it. Unfortunately this is the result of the experimental technique used by Leonardo for painting the Last Supper, egg tempera on wall, which gave him spectacular artistic results but proved very fragile over time, making the Last Supper always at risk of vanishing forever. That's why entrances have to be rigorously limited, no more than 30 people every 15 minutes, and that's why it's so difficult to find the tickets.
My suggestion for securing the entrance is to book a guided tour with Leonardoamilano on leonardoamilano.com. This way you have a guaranteed entrance and you can have a guided tour with an experienced guide... like me! Hope to see you there then.
Santa Maria Delle Grazie Church (The Last Supper) - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Milan, Italy)
We decided to visit the Santa Maria Delle Grazie Church which famously holds The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci... However, the more we learn't about the painting, the less we wanted to see it. Hardly anything of the original painting remains... It suffered moisture damage from being painted on an exterior wall, damage from it's intended protection, damage from moving the painting, damage from French invaders and then many many restoration attempts and a total re-paint. That being said, it was nice to be in the environment in which the work was done and that was enough for us!
To see the painting, you need to visit the mosoleum (next door, beside the church), and pay a bit of a fee (See video). To keep the Last Supper painting at the room temperature, a maximum of 25 people can enter the refectory every 15 minutes, so you only get 15 minutes and no cameras allowed!
Opening Times:
After the last restoration extensive measures have been inserted to protect the fresco. To keep the Last Supper painting at the room temperature, a maximum of 25 people can enter the refectory every 15 minutes.
