⁴ᴷ Exploring Abandoned NYC LIRR Rockaway Beach Branch near Forest Park, Queens
From Wikipedia (
The Rockaway Beach Branch was a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in Queens, New York City, United States. The line left the Main Line at Whitepot Junction in Rego Park heading south via Ozone Park and across Jamaica Bay to Hammels in the Rockaways, turning west there to a terminal at Rockaway Park. Along the way it connected with the Montauk Branch near Glendale, the Atlantic Branch near Woodhaven, and the Far Rockaway Branch at Hammels.
After a 1950 fire, the Jamaica Bay bridge was closed and the line south of Ozone Park sold to the city, which rehabilitated the portion south of Liberty Avenue and connected it to the New York City Subway system as the IND Rockaway Line. The portion north of the subway connection was closed in 1962, and three proposals exist for the reuse of the line.
Legacy and planned restoration
The city never filed to abandon the isolated section of double trackage between Elmhurst and Ozone Park, due to the intended connection to the IND Queens Boulevard Line subway. This had been proposed under the IND Second System and later by Robert Moses, with an existing provision at the 63rd Drive subway station for a future connection to Whitepot Junction. An additional plan proposed a connection to the BMT Jamaica Line around the Brooklyn Manor station. However, in October 1955 shortly after LIRR service on the Queens portion of the Far Rockaway Branch ended, it was decided to terminate subway service at Liberty Avenue, with only the connection to the Fulton Street El completed. The right-of-way was sold to the City of New York and is now in most sections administered by the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), except for a 7 acres (2.8 ha) section in Forest Park that has been mapped as parkland. The line remains officially out of service and is known by locals as the forgotten spur, a name which dates back to the mid-1950s when the subway plans for the spur were dropped. Much of the original infrastructure has either been removed, damaged, rotted or undermined, though some rails, wooden ties, electrical towers and even de-electrified third rails can still be found in some sections, with much of it dating from 1908 or earlier, when the line was originally electrified. The failure to reactivate the northern portion of the line had been attributed to the potential high costs of connecting it to the Queens Boulevard Line, and capacity issues on the line which persist to day, making the Fulton line connection more feasible.
The line is a regular haunt for hikers, homeless, and such. The right-of-way can be easily be seen, especially along the abandoned elevated embankment in Woodhaven and Ozone Park. With exception to areas around the former junction with the Montauk Branch that have been redeveloped, and the Logan Bus Company lot, the line in its entirety is owned by the City of New York. The line is encroached by a number of adjacent property owners, which is an obstacle for anything to be done with the right-of-way.
There are proposals for rail service and a rail trail on this right-of-way. One proposal juxtaposes both plans.

Long Island Rail Road video postcard Dec. 12, 2017
HUNTINGTON, N.Y. — It is a mid-December mid-afternoon at the Long Island Rail Road’s Huntington Station on the Port Jefferson Branch. With predecessor companies starting as far back as 1834, the LIRR carries 355,000 passengers a day, making it number one commuter line in volume in the United States. Here, the diesel continuation of Train 610 from Penn Station New York, led by unit 403, an EMD DE30AC, charges past waiting M7 MU Train number 1701, which will head westbound to Penn Station in a few minutes. With 11 Lines and 124 stations served, both electric and diesel traction are needed for the 45 diesels, 1003 multiple unit cars, and 134 bilevel diesel-hauled coaches.

Riding the LONG ISLAND RAILROAD from Woodside to Penn Station - LIRR
I jumped on the Long Island Railroad at Woodside and decided to record the voyage into Manhattan. It was a really hot day, but the views were pretty good. I was sitting on the right side of the train.
As we get closer to Manhattan, there's a pretty good view of the New York City skyline. The train passes through Sunnyside Yard, where the Amtrak trains are stored, and Long Island City.
The Long Island Rail Road (reporting mark LI) or LIRR is a commuter rail system serving the length of Long Island, New York, stretching from Manhattan to the easternmost tip of Suffolk County, New York. It is the second busiest commuter railroad in North America (only recently surpassed by its sister railroad, Metro-North), serving about 81 million passengers each year. Established in 1834 and having operated continuously since then, it is the oldest US railroad still operating under its original name and charter. There are 124 stations on the LIRR, and more than 700 miles (1,100 km) of track on its two lines to the two forks of the island and eight major branches. Each weekday, the LIRR provides more than 303,000 rides to customers. It is publicly owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which has styled it MTA Long Island Rail Road. The current LIRR logo combines the circular MTA logo with the text Long Island Rail Road, and appears on the sides of trains. The LIRR is one of two commuter rail systems owned by the MTA; the other one is Metro-North Railroad.
The LIRR is the only commuter passenger railroad in the United States to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with significant off peak, weekend, and holiday service.
Train Sim World 2020 - Long Island Railroad () Belmont Park to Jamaica
In this video we'll be driving the Bombardier M7 in Timetable Mode, the new name for Service Mode. As evidenced by the title, this is a short run from Belmont Park to Jamaica.
However, instead of a normal passenger service, this was actually an empty stock working. My job for this run was to park the train in a siding immediately east of Jamaica station, which you can see in the distance as we pull into the siding.
I feel I should mention that the M7 electric multiple unit is not be confused with the M7 class 0-4-4 tank engines from the London and South Western Railway, of which two are preserved (30053 at the Swanage Railway and 245 at the National Railway Museum).
The Long Island Rail Road DLC is available here. Actually, I think it's one of the star routes in Train Sim World 2020:
I have also written a review on this route, which you can find by scrolling down to the review section on the product page.
Leaving Long Island Railroad Train at Penn Station in Manhattan
Pennsylvania Station, also known as New York Penn Station or Penn Station, is the main intercity railroad station in New York City. Serving more than 600,000 commuter rail and Amtrak passengers a day[4] — up to one thousand every ninety seconds[5]— it is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the United States[6][7] and in North America.[8][9]
Penn Station is in the midtown area of Manhattan, close to Herald Square, the Empire State Building, Koreatown, and the Macy's department store. Entirely underground, it sits beneath Madison Square Garden, between Seventh Avenue and Eighth Avenue and between 31st and 34th Streets. The station has 21 tracks fed by seven tunnels (the North River Tunnels, the East River Tunnels, and the Empire Connection tunnel).[10]
Man riding on the roof of the LIRR train to avoid $4 city ticket Sunday 4/14/13
I took the picture and video of this guy on the roof of the Long Island Rail Road train as it pulled into Forest Hills station going east. The guy remained on the train as it continued toward Kew Gardens, he got off at Jamaica and went on his way.
He was wearing camouflage grey clothing so he must be a pro at this.
It was 9:11am sunday morning April 14.
My interview with local news should have aired but unfortunately they had to report the tragic Boston marathon bomb.

Jamaica Avenue is a major avenue in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, New York, in the United States. Jamaica Avenue's western end is at Broadway and Fulton Street, as a continuation of East New York Avenue, in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood. Physically, East New York Avenue connects westbound to New York Avenue, where East New York Avenue changes names another time to Lincoln Road; Lincoln Road continues to Ocean Avenue in the west, where it ends. Its eastern end is at the city line in Bellerose, Queens, where it becomes Jericho Turnpike to serve the rest of Long Island. The section of Jamaica Avenue designated as New York State Route 25 runs from Braddock Avenue to the city line, where Jamaica Avenue becomes Jericho Turnpike.

Long Island is a densely populated island in Southeast New York in the Northeast part of the United States, beginning at New York Harbor approximately 0.35 miles (0.56 km) from Manhattan Island and extending eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. The island comprises four counties in the U.S. state of New York. Kings and Queens Counties (the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, respectively) and Nassau County share the western third of the island, while Suffolk County occupies the eastern two-thirds. More than half of New York City's residents now live on Long Island, in Brooklyn, and in Queens. However, many people in the New York metropolitan area (even in Brooklyn and Queens) colloquially use the term Long Island (or the Island) to refer exclusively to Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and conversely, employ the term the City to mean Manhattan alone.
Broadly speaking, Long Island may refer both to the main island and the surrounding outer barrier islands. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across which lie Westchester County, New York, and the state of Connecticut. Across the Block Island Sound to the northeast is the state of Rhode Island. To the west, Long Island is separated from the Bronx and the island of Manhattan by the East River. To the extreme southwest, it is separated from Staten Island and the state of New Jersey by Upper New York Bay, the Narrows, and Lower New York Bay. To the east lie Block Island—which belongs to the State of Rhode Island—and numerous smaller islands.
Both the longest[5] and the largest island in the contiguous United States, Long Island extends 118 miles (190 km) eastward from New York Harbor to Montauk Point, with a maximum north-to-south distance of 23 miles (37 km) between Long Island Sound and the Atlantic coast. With a land area of 1,401 square miles (3,630 km2), Long Island is the 11th-largest island in the United States and the 149th-largest island in the world—larger than the 1,214 square miles (3,140 km2) of the smallest U.S. state, Rhode Island.
With a Census-estimated population of 7,869,820 in 2017, constituting nearly 40% of New York State's population, Long Island is the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 18th-most populous island in the world (ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō). Its population density is 5,595.1 inhabitants per square mile (2,160.3/km2). If Long Island geographically constituted an independent metropolitan statistical area, it would rank fourth most populous in the United States; while if it were a U.S. state, Long Island would rank thirteenth in population and first in population density. Long Island is culturally and ethnically diverse, featuring some of the wealthiest and most expensive neighborhoods in the Western Hemisphere near the shorelines as well as working-class areas in all four counties.
As a hub of commercial aviation, Long Island contains two of the New York City metropolitan area's three busiest airports, JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, in addition to Islip MacArthur Airport; as well as two major air traffic control radar facilities, the New York TRACON and the New York ARTCC. Nine bridges and thirteen tunnels (including railroad tunnels) connect Brooklyn and Queens to the three other boroughs of New York City. Ferries connect Suffolk County northward across Long Island Sound to the state of Connecticut. The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest commuter railroad in North America and operates 24/7. Nassau County high school students often feature prominently as winners of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and similar STEM-based academic awards. Biotechnology companies and scientific research play a significant role in Long Island's economy, including research facilities at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Plum Island Animal Disease Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, the City University of New York, and Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.

Walking Around Penn Station in New York City
Penn Station is at the center of the Northeast Corridor, a passenger rail line that connects New York City with Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and intermediate points. Intercity trains are operated by Amtrak, which owns the station, while commuter rail services are operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and New Jersey Transit. Connections are available within the complex to the New York City Subway, and buses.
The original Pennsylvania Station was inspired by the Gare d'Orsay in Paris (the world's first electrified rail terminal) and was constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1901 to 1910. After a decline in passenger usage during the 1950s, the original station was demolished in 1963 and replaced in 1969 with the current station. Plans for Pennsylvania Station include the possibility of shifting some trains to the adjacent Farley Post Office, a building designed by the same architects as the original 1910 Pennsylvania Station.
