Boston was slammed with an extreme dose of winter weather on Thursday (January 4) as heavy snow and a three-foot (0.9-meter) tidal surge flooded the area around Boston's historic Long Wharf with icy seawater during high tide.
A bystander captured video of a driver trying to reverse a car out of the Boston Harbor that was surrounded by rushing floodwater and ice.
The unusual storm was powered by a rapid plunge in barometric pressure that some weather forecasters referred to as bombogenesis or a bomb cyclone, which brought high winds and swift, heavy snowfall.
The National Weather Service said the flooding tied a 40-year record.

#Boston is the capital and most populous city. of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. The city proper covers 48 square miles with an estimated population of 667,137 in 2015, making it the largest city in New England and the 23rd most populous city in the United States.
One of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Upon U.S. independence from Great Britain, it continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture.

Faneuil Hall, located near the waterfront and today's Government Center, in Boston, Massachusetts, has been a marketplace and a meeting hall since 1743. It was the site of several speeches by Samuel Adams, James Otis, and others encouraging independence from Great Britain. Now it is part of Boston National Historical Park and a well-known stop on the Freedom Trail. It is sometimes referred to as the Cradle of Liberty. In 2008, Faneuil Hall was rated number 4 in America's 25 Most Visited Tourist Sites by Forbes Traveler.
Quincy Market is a historic market complex near Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. It was constructed in 1824–26 and named in honor of Mayor Josiah Quincy, who organized its construction without any tax or debt. The market was designated a National Historic Landmark, recognizing its significance as one of the largest market complexes built in the United States in the first half of the 19th century.
