The world-famous Empire State Building is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan. The 86th floor observation Deck provides unforgettable 360° views of New York City and beyond.
The Empire State Building is a 102-story[c] Art Deco skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon and completed in 1931. The building has a roof height of 1,250 feet (380 m) and stands a total of 1,454 feet (443.2 m) tall, including its antenna. Its name is derived from Empire State, the nickname of New York, which is of unknown origin. As of 2019 the building is the 5th-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States and the 28th-tallest in the world. It is also the 6th-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas. The Empire State Building stood as the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years until the completion of the World Trade Center's North Tower in Lower Manhattan in late 1970. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, it was again the tallest building in New York until the new One World Trade Center was completed in April 2012.
The site of the Empire State Building, located in Midtown South on the west side of Fifth Avenue between West 33rd and 34th Streets, was originally part of an early 18th-century farm. It was later purchased by the Astor family, who built the Waldorf–Astoria Hotel on the site in the 1890s. The hotel remained in operation until the late 1920s, when it was sold to the Bethlehem Engineering Corporation, then to Empire State Inc., a business venture that included famous businessman and former General Motors executive, John J. Raskob, members of the du Pont family, and former New York governor Al Smith.[15] The original design of the Empire State Building was for a 50-story office building. However, after fifteen revisions, the final design was for an 86-story 1,250-foot building, with an airship mast on top. This ensured it would be the world's tallest building, beating the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street, two other Manhattan skyscrapers under construction at the time that were also vying for that distinction.
Demolition of the Waldorf–Astoria began in October 1929, and the foundation of the Empire State Building was excavated before demolition was even complete. Construction on the building itself started on March 17, 1930, with an average construction rate of four and a half floors per week. A well-coordinated schedule meant that the 86 stories were topped out on September 19; the mast was completed by November 21; and the building was opened on May 1, 1931, thirteen and a half months after the first steel beam was erected. Despite the publicity surrounding the building's construction, its owners failed to make a profit until the early 1950s. However, since its opening, the building's Art Deco architecture and open-air observation deck has made it a popular tourist attraction, with around 4 million visitors from around the world visiting the building's 86th and 102nd floor observatories every year.[16] Since the mid-2010s, the Empire State Building has been undergoing improvements to improve access to its observation decks.[1]
The building stands within a mile of other major Midtown tourist attractions including Grand Central Terminal, Pennsylvania Station, Madison Square Garden, Koreatown, and Macy's Herald Square.
The Empire State Building is an American cultural icon and has been featured in more than 250 TV shows and movies since the film King Kong was released in 1933. A symbol of New York City, the tower has been named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Empire State Building and its ground-floor interior have been designated as a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and were confirmed as such by the New York City Board of Estimate. It was also designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, and was ranked number one on the American Institute of Architects' List of America's Favorite Architecture in 2007.

USA: Russian flag flown at half-mast in NYC following Churkin's death
The Russian flag was flown at half-mast outside the Consulate-General of Russia in New York City following the death of the Russian ambassador to the UN Vitali Churkin, Monday.
Churkin died in New York City earlier on Monday, with the Russian foreign ministry confirming the veteran diplomat's death after he was reportedly taken to hospital after suffering from heart failure.
He was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan after he allegedly suffered heart problems at the offices of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation on East 67th Street.

The New York Times Building is a skyscraper on the west side of Midtown Manhattan that was completed in 2007. Its chief tenant is The New York Times Company, publisher of The New York Times as well as The Boston Globe, the International Herald Tribune, and other newspapers. Construction was a joint venture of The New York Times Company, Forest City Ratner Companies—the Cleveland-based real estate firm redeveloping the Brooklyn Atlantic rail yards—and ING Real Estate.
The tower was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and FXFOWLE Architects, with Gensler providing interior design. The lighting design for the building's nighttime identity was designed by the Office for Visual Interaction Inc.
The tower rises 748 feet (228 m) from the street to its roof, with the exterior curtain wall extending 92 feet (28 m) higher to 840 feet (260 m), and a mast rising to 1,046 feet (319 m). As of 2008, the building is tied with the Chrysler Building as the third tallest building in New York City and the seventh tallest in the United States.
The steel-framed building, cruciform in plan, utilizes a screen of 1 5⁄8 (41.3 mm) ceramic rods mounted on the exterior of the glass curtain wall on the east, west and south facades. The rod spacing increases from the base to the top, providing greater transparency as the building rises. The steel framing and bracing is exposed at the four corner notches of the building.
The building is promoted as a Green structure, though it is not LEED certified.
The design incorporates many features for increased energy efficiency. The curtain wall, fully glazed with low-e glass, maximizes natural light within the building while the ceramic-rod screen helps block direct sunlight and reduce cooling loads. Mechanized shades controlled by sensors reduce glare, while more than 18,000 individually-dimmable fluorescent fixtures supplement natural light, providing a real energy savings of 30 percent.
A natural gas cogeneration plant provides 40 percent of the electrical power to The New York Times Company' space within the building, with the waste heat used for heating and cooling. Floors occupied by The New York Times Company utilize a raised floor system that allows for underfloor air distribution, which requires less cooling than a conventional ducted system. The building also incorporates free-air cooling, bringing in outside air when it is cooler than the interior space, which saves additional energy. In excess of 95% of the structural steel was recycled.
The building, like many in midtown Manhattan, has no on-site parking, with most employees arriving by public transit. Since December 2007, building management has provided an indoor parking area for 20 bicycles.
The story of the tower's construction is showcased at the Liberty Science Center's exhibition Skyscraper! Achievement and Impact.
In the summer of 2008, three men illegally climbed the external facade of The New York Times Building within a month of each other, with the first two on the same day. The three climbers were not associated with one another.
On June 5, 2008, a professional climber, Alain Robert, dubbed The French Spiderman, climbed the north side of The New York Times Building. He was able to scale the building from first floor all the way to the roof. During his climb, Robert attached a fluorescent green neon sign to the building that read Global warming kills more people than a 9/11 every week. Robert also wore a t-shirt promoting the website The Solution is Simple. Robert was met on the roof by the NYPD emergency service unit team where he was put in a harness to ensure he did not fall and placed under arrest.
Later that day, a second climber scaled the western face of the building. He also was arrested for climbing the building facade after reaching the roof. The climber, 32-year old Brooklyn resident Renaldo Clarke, was wearing a T-shirt with the words Malaria No More written on it.
The third climber was David Malone, 29, from Connecticut, who also scaled the west side of the building on July 9, 2008. Unlike the two previous climbers, Malone did not attempt to make it to the roof. He hung a banner around the fifth floor upon the first T of The New York Times sign, that had a picture of Osama Bin Laden holding Bush like a puppet - Bin Laden's Plan (the title of his book and Web site). He then climbed higher, stopping at the 11th floor, and remained hanging on the building for four hours before being arrested. Malone said he was protesting Al Qaeda's crusader baiting, and intentional provocation of the U.S.

Borough Park (usually spelled Boro Park by its residents), is a neighborhood in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City in the United States.
Borough Park is home to one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities outside of Israel, with one of the largest concentrations of Jews in the United States and Orthodox traditions, rivaling many insular communities. Since the average number of children in Hasidic and Hareidi families is 6.72, Borough Park is experiencing sharp growth.] It is an economically diverse area, with rich, working class and poor people living side-by-side and going to the same schools and synagogues.
Its heart lies between 11th and 18th Avenues and 40th and 60th Streets. Borough Park is patrolled by the NYPD's 66th Precinct.

My name is Kathleen McConahay, and I sell and repair the flags.
Mother Nature is so powerful. It will rot the flag because these flags don't come down. They're 20 by 30. No one's taking them down every day and putting them back up. So they're out in the rain. They're out in the icy snow. The dirt in the air acts like little saws, and they will cut the material, so that's how they rot.
Kathleen personally picks up and delivers flags for repair.

Kathleen: We are in the front of The Herald-Times, which is our local newspaper here in Bloomington, Indiana. Facing the flag, the U.S. flag is always on the left — kind of where your heart is, you know if you put your hand over your heart? You can see the dam-, you see it starting to emerge above the light up here.
Passenger: Yeah. Uh-huh (affirmative).
Katheleen: The top part is starting to fray, so that'll probably come down fairly soon, and I'll be repairing it.
My dad was in World War II. My mother's dad was also in World War II. He was there, and he was in the Battle of the Bulge, and actually, he was a prisoner of war. When you think about the sacrifices people make for our country, it really blows your mind. I can't imagine being in a foxhole or being in a battle where, really, your life is on the line. And, you know, how many of us ever, ever go through something like that? And thanks to them, we don't have to.
There really isn't any reason to fly a frayed flag. You really should take it down and just either get a new flag or cut off that frayed edge and hem it. You can wash it in your washing machine and dry it in your dryer because dirt is its number one enemy. When there's a new one up, though, there's nothing prettier than a brand new flag flying.

More than 10,000 mourners in New York have attended a memorial to Cardinal John O'Connor at the Cathedral in which he ministered for 16 years.
The Cardinal, who was the United States' highest ranking Roman Catholic, was returned to St Patrick's Cathedral on the first of a four day service in his memory.
He died on Wednesday at the age of 80 after fighting cancer for months.
Cardinal's O'Connor's body was brought down New York City's Fifth Avenue with an escort of police motorcycles.
His coffin was then carried through the brass doors of St Patrick's cathedral, brought up the aisle and placed at the front of the main altar.
A steady flow of mourners - estimated at about 10,000 - was soon marching past the open casket to bid a final goodbye to a Cardinal who held a special place in their hearts.
To the left of the cathedral doors, the Sisters of Life - an order of nuns founded in 1991 by the cardinal - stood awaiting his arrival.
At the end of the service, the lid of the coffin was removed to show the cardinal lying peacefully inside on red velvet.
A New York bishop under his ministry paid tribute to the Cardinal as an inspiration.

The cardinal's body will lie in state all day Saturday and Sunday near his now empty chair - the official archbishop's cathedra.
The funeral Mass was scheduled for Monday afternoon.
The cardinal will be interred in the crypt beneath the cathedral's altar, where all the previous archbishops of New York are buried.
Outside the cathedral New Yorkers paid tribute to the colourful Cardinal.

Before he died O'Connor supported efforts to win Toussaint sainthood.

Tribute in Light New York Flag at half mast 1
The Tribute in Light is an art installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11 attacks. Tribute in Lights was originally going to be named Towers of Light , but the victims' families felt that the name emphasized the buildings destroyed instead of the people killed.

Pope John Paul will be getting a taste of the latest in pre-fabricated temporary housing on his US tour next week.
The pontiff is due to celebrate mass in Central Park and will then spend the night in a purpose-built temporary home nearby.
As preparations for the Pope's visit to New York entered their final stages, his novel, state-of-the-art accommodation was erected in Central Park Saturday.
Early Saturday, New York police escorted the temporary home of Pope John Paul through the Bronx to Manhattan and into Central Park.
Cranes off-loaded the pre-fab house that the Pope will live in while visiting New York.
The journey from upstate New York, where the structure was built, lasted more than six hours.
After arriving in the park, the house got caught in some trees.
But when the branches were cleared away, the building was set up and is reported to be in excellent condition awaiting the pontiff's visit.
John Paul arrives in New Jersey on Wednesday, and has events around the New York area for the rest of the week.

The Empire State Building is an American cultural icon and has been featured in more than 250 TV shows and movies since the film King Kong was released in 1933. A symbol of New York City, the tower has been named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Empire State Building and its ground-floor interior have been designated as a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and were confirmed as such by the New York City Board of Estimate. It was also designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, and was ranked number one on the American Institute of Architects' List of America's Favorite Architecture in 2007.
