Ep. 64: Los Alamos & Santa Fe | New Mexico RV travel camping
Apparently it's not if you'll have a trailer tire blowout, it's when you'll have a trailer tire blowout. And on our way to Los Alamos, we experienced our first blowout -- on a tire we bought only five days earlier in Episode 63! We safely rolled into Los Alamos and found a perfect high-altitude campsite nestled among the Aspen trees, from which we explore the Puebloan ruins at Bandelier National Monument, learn about Los Alamos' important history in ending World War II, hike Pajarito Mountain and savor the southwestern flavor of Santa Fe.

GREG MELLO [Director of the Los Alamos Study Group]: Well, Los Alamos National Laboratory is the—in funding terms, it's the main nuclear warhead facility of the United States.
There is a lot of plutonium there. There's tritium—actually, tritium very close to the fire, about HALF a MILE from the fire.
Part of the problem is there's an information deficit, and there's a serious trust deficit. You can't really take anything that the laboratory says at face value. It's kind of a minimum—you know, they'd be the LAST to tell you if there was a SERIOUS PROBLEM.
So you have to piece it together from other information. And that's—Los Alamos Lab is becoming the center of plutonium manufacture for the country.

Fukushima Last Ceiling Panel Removed From Reactor Unit 1 10/5/15
Last Ceiling Panel Removed From Fukushima Reactor Unit 1
Workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have removed the last remaining ceiling panel covering a damaged reactor building. It is part of efforts to take out spent nuclear fuel from the building.
On Monday, the workers used a remote controlled crane to lift the panel, measuring 42 meters by 7 meters, from the No. 1 reactor building.
Scattered debris near the spent nuclear fuel pool can now be seen from outside.
The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, says there has been no change in radiation levels around reactor buildings.
The No.1 reactor building was damaged in the 2011 accident. TEPCO installed a cover around it to prevent radioactive materials from escaping.
In July, the utility began removing 6 ceiling panels that make up the cover. Workers plan to take out 392 units of fuel from the pool in the reactor building where they are being stored.
But work needs to be done to clean up debris around the pool before removing the spent fuel.
TEPCO officials told reporters that the entire cover needs to be demolished before the spent fuel can be removed. They say top priority will be placed on safety during the process.

Manhattan Project sites to open as National Park
The US government is set to designate facilities where scientists developed the atomic bomb during World War Two as a new national park.
A signing ceremony will be held in Washington on November 10th to formally establish the Manhattan Project National Historical Park.
Under the Manhattan Project, the United States conducted the world's first atomic bomb test in July 1945. US warplanes dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August that year.
The planned national park will include former nuclear laboratories and plutonium production plants in Los Alamos, New Mexico, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Hanford in Washington State.
The US government says the goal of designating the sites as a park is not to celebrate the atomic bomb, but to educate the public about the history and legacy of the Manhattan Project that created it.
The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have asked US authorities to make sure that exhibits at the park provide clear and correct presentation of the damage the bombs have caused.

Town in Fukushima Test-Plants Yuzu Trees
Town officials will check the growth of the yuzu trees as well as the potential impact of radioactive substances for 3 years. After confirming their safety, they hope to begin the full-fledged production of yuzu fruit for shipment.
A farmer said she wants to see her town regain its fame as a town of fine yuzu fruit.

Bandelier National Monument New Mexico Walking Tour
Bandelier National Monument is a 33,677-acre (13,629 ha) United States National Monument near Los Alamos in Sandoval and Los Alamos Counties, New Mexico. The monument preserves the homes and territory of the Ancestral Puebloans of a later era in the Southwest. Most of the pueblo structures date to two eras, dating between 1150 and 1600 AD.
The Monument is 50 square miles (130 km2) of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains. Over 70% of the Monument is wilderness, with over one mile elevation change, from about 5,000 feet (1,500 m) along the Rio Grande to over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) at the peak of Cerro Grande on the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitats. There are three miles of road, and more than 70 miles of hiking trails. The Monument protects Ancestral Pueblo archeological sites, a diverse and scenic landscape, and the country's largest National Park Service Civilian Conservation Corps National Landmark District.
Bandelier was designated by President Woodrow Wilson as a National Monument on February 11, 1916, and named for Adolph Bandelier, a Swiss-American anthropologist who researched the cultures of the area and supported preservation of the sites. The park infrastructure was developed in the 1930s by crews of the Civilian Conservation Corps and is a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved architecture. The National Park Service cooperates with surrounding Pueblos, other federal agencies, and state agencies to manage the park.

Jon Hunner's Interview
Dr. Jon Hunner is a Professor of History at New Mexico State University, the author of Inventing Los Alamos, and J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Cold War and the Atomic West, and a former director of the New Mexico History Museum. In this interview, Hunner provides an overview of life at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, including its takeover of the Los Alamos Ranch School and its relationship with Hispanos and Pueblos in the area. He talks about how Manhattan Project scientists and their family members would arrive in Santa Fe, and the sites in Santa Fe that are linked to the project. Hunner also discusses J. Robert Oppenheimer and his family, and Oppenheimer’s security hearing that revoked his security clearance. He describes the devastating effects of the atomic bombs on the Japanese who lived in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and discusses his thoughts on the influence of the atomic bombs on Japan’s decision to surrender.

Golden Spike National Historic Site
The golden spike (also known as The Last Spike is the ceremonial final spike driven by Leland Stanford to join the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States connecting the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. The term last spike has been used to refer to one driven at the usually ceremonial completion of any new railroad construction projects, particularly those in which construction is undertaken from two disparate origins towards a meeting point. The spike now lies in the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
Completing the last link in the transcontinental railroad with a spike of gold was the brainchild of David Hewes, a San Francisco financier and contractor. The spike had been manufactured earlier that year especially for the event by the William T. Garratt Foundry in San Francisco. Two of the sides were engraved with the names of the railroad officers and directors. A special tie of polished California laurel was chosen to complete the line where the spike would be driven. The ceremony was originally to be held on May 8, 1869 (the date actually engraved on the spike), but it was postponed two days because of bad weather and a labor dispute that delayed the arrival of the Union Pacific side of the rail line.
Nagasaki survivor visits the U.S. town that fueled his city's destruction
Of the thousands of people who have toured the world's original large-scale plutonium reactor in Hanford, Washington, Mitsugi Moriguchi is the first to come in a radiation-blocking jumpsuit. And there's a good reason: Moriguchi is believed to be the first Nagasaki bombing survivor to visit the historic facility. Special correspondent Jenny Cunningham of KCTS reports.
