PaintAnnapolis
Maryland Federation of Art hosted the Paint Annapolis event for the first time this June 2014. John Jensen shot video and edited it into this 12 minute movie. With music by Adrian Bond.
How it worked: On Tuesday, the artists had the option of painting anywhere in Anne Arundel County, and from Wednesday on, they were to paint within the city of Annapolis. Each artist chose two of the paintings they created during the week to be considered for awards. They also had an opportunity to win a Nocturne Award if they painted during the Nocturne (which was open to the public for participation) in the designated Arts & Entertainment District and entered it separately into the Nocturne competition. And lastly, they had the chance to win a Dueling Brushes award.
Award winners are listed in the credits of the movie, or go to for details.

We’re Maryland, Maryland
If you think we can be friends
Then we’ll tell you about our
23 Counties you’ll see within

Maryland Art Place - 30th Anniversary Benefit Exhibition and Auction (November 11, 2011)
Photographed and produced by Bell and Barad Media
There was so much to see at the Maryland Art Place's Impact: 30th Anniversary Benefit Exhibition and Auction.
The artwork is very creative, said Rick Armiger, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney vice president, as he and community volunteer Martina Jeansson walked through the MAP galleries perusing the scores of pieces by Maryland artists, all up for auction.
We always find some art to buy, said Patrick Kerins, New Enterprise Associates general partner, who — with his wife, Terry Morgenthaler, a community volunteer — are longtime MAP supporters.
I was blown away by [artist and board member] Michel Modell's work, said Leslie Shepard, retired Baltimore School for the Arts director.
However, for some of the guests, Shepard herself was one of the evening's sights. She was one of 12 Maryland women — including Suzi Cordish, MAP board chairwoman; Rheda Becker, musical narrator; Doreen Bolger, Baltimore Museum of Art director; Lynn Deering, former Center Stage board chairwoman; Mary Ann Mears, artist; and Leslie King-Hammond, artist and founding director of the new Center for Race and Culture at MICA — honored that night for their cultural contributions.
The idea of tonight is fantastic. That all 12 honorees are here is a tribute to MAP. They're all busy women, said David Cordish, chairman of Cordish Cos.
However, the sightseeing only began with the honorees. This was a see-and-be-seen crowd, with familiar faces including John Waters, filmmaker and artist; Amie Snead and Steve Ziger, Ziger/Snead partners; Stiles Colwill, Stiles Colwill Interiors principal; Lainy Lebow-Sachs, Kennedy Krieger Institute executive vice president; Sue Hess, Maryland Citizens founding board chairwoman; Patti Baum, RBC Wealth Management financial adviser; Costas Grimaldis, C. Grimaldis Gallery owner; Chuck Nabit, Westport Investment Group managing director; Monykka Berrocosa, MyCity4Her CEO; Jay Dugan, Preplayed Entertainment CEO; Brian Lawrence, Style Magazine managing editor; and Karen Bokram, Girls Life editor/publisher.
Sean Lord, archival framer, surveyed the room and summed it up.
It's my favorite party of the year. It's a great cross-mix of Baltimore and a really great vibe.

George Peter Tingley - Winter
Educational, Introduction to a new work:
Kara Dahl Russell performs her interpretation of Winter (2017), a work composed for solo piano by George Peter Tingley.
This work sits very comfortably on the harp. I began working on this on pedal harp, but then I realized that it would work easily on lever harp, AND my lever harp has a very crisp, crystaline sound that would suit the imagery of the music.
It is my delight & honor to perform this work of George Peter Tingley. As with many of his publications, it is PEFECT FOR PEDAGOGY. The strong imagery allows for emotional expressiveness, interpretational choices and the addition of special techniques. I have used: whispering glissades, harmonics, and fingernails pres de la table to futher create a varied cold palette.
My lever harp is a one-of-a-kind Lily made by the folks at H. Bryan and company - when they were still making instruments. They specialize in restoration of historic harps, and the sound of this lever harp is very much like an historic single action harp. Light, crisp and bright.
George Peter Tingley is a composer, teacher and pianist living in the San Francisco Bay Area in Point Richmond, California. Born in Oakland, California, he began playing the violin at the age of four and continued for the next seven or eight years. At age 10 he got a piano and immediately began using it to improvise and write songs. Shortly afterwards he began taking piano lessons.
Mr. Tingley received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance from California State University, Hayward, and completed both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Music Theory at the University of Southern California. During the 1970s he was a private composition student of the legendary Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France.
After returning from France, Mr. Tingley began teaching privately. In 1989 he started writing music for the educational market and now has over 75 published piano pieces. His most popular solo is Reverie, published by Alfred in 1991. He is also a staff composer for Alfred Publishing. His collection of piano duet music, Fiddle and the Tuba (for teacher and student), is listed in the bulletin of the National Federation of Music Clubs.
In 1992 Mr. Tingley wrote a composition for Olympic figure-skating champion Kristi Yamaguchi, entitled Kristi's Theme. A Warner Bros. Publication, the piece was arranged for full symphony orchestra and recorded featuring Mr. Tingley as the piano soloist. Kristi has skated to the music on many live and televised performances.
His music can be found and purchased many places online, here is one source:
You can follow George Peter Tingley on Facebook. If you want to hear more of his music, search by his name on YouTube, and you will find videos of children from all over the world playing his works in recitals!

“That They May All be One” - New Testament Images of Christian Unity
Michael J. Gorman, Raymond E. Brown Professor if Biblical Studies and Theology, St. Mary’s Seminary & University, Baltimore
April 3, 2019
ANNUAL LECTURE IN HONOR OF RICHARD J. CLIFFORD, S.J.
“That They May All be One”: New Testament Images of Christian Unity
Division seems to be the order of the day, not least in the Christian Church. This lecture examines seven images of Christian unity in the New Testament: mutual indwelling with God in love (John 17:20-23); Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16); A Menagerie: Profane Creatures Made Clean (Acts 10:9-16); The Broken Wall, a Holy Temple (Ephesians 2:14-22); A Cruciform Colony of Heaven (Philippians 1:27–2:4); One Body with Many Members (1 Corinthians 12); A Great Multitude from Every Nation (Revelation 7). Dr. Gorman, discusses how these images contribute to our understanding of Christian unity as a task and gift from God.

Lecture: Alexander Borodin - In the Steppes of Central Asia
Educational Pre-Concert Lecture, Biography, Music History:
Kara Dahl Russell presents a biographical Pre-Concert Lecture on the life of Alexander Borodin and his orchestral work: In the Steppes of Central Asia.
When I prepare information for pre-concert lectures, I often have to trim the final version down considerably for time constraints. Most lectures require me to speak about at least 3 works. In preparing this video, I decided to use my original, long version to provide a more comprehensive presentation that can stand on it's own, and/or still provide a pre-concert lecture before listening to the work. I am particularly pleased with this one!
And if I am ultimately able to influence more pianists to explore and perform the piano set Petite Suite of Borodin, then I will really have accomplished something extra! (link below)
