Matheson Hammock Park Miami Florida
Matheson Hammock opened in 1930 as the first county park of Dade County, a gift of 80 acres to the county from William J. Matheson.[1] Originally administered by the county's first director of public parks, A. D. Barnes, and designed by the landscape architect William Lyman Phillips,[2] today it is owned and managed by Miami-Dade County.
Matheson wanted the land to be used as a park to preserve the wild and natural beauty. It grew with further donations by the Matheson heirs, purchases by county commissioner Charles Crandon, and other donations to its current 630 acres.[3] Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crews were assigned to Matheson Hammock in 1936 and began to develop the Bayfront park area. Coral stone buildings rose and the picnic area had a coral stone shelter.
Without the use of the inexpensive and skilled labor force under the state and federal assistance programs, it would have been impossible to build the miles of carefully hewn coral stone walls and native stone buildings. The quality of the CCC's work was verified in 1945 when a hurricane resulted in 12-foot waves rolling over Matheson Hammock, causing immense damage to equipment and furnishings, and depositing layers of mud and trash in the park, but the basic CCC structures stood firm and the park recovered

My dear friend and I decided to have a Girl's adventure morning by going Kayaking at Matheson Hammock Park located at 9610 Old Cutler Road Miami, FL.
As you will see in the video, when you enter the park through Old Cutler Road, you will follow a beautiful road that will take you to a large parking lot that faces Biscayne Bay.
Once you park there, you will find Adventure Sport's trailer parked right there for you to rent you kayak (both single and tandem). Considering it was really windy and my friend wasn't too comfortable being on her own, we went for a tandem kayak which is rented out at $30 per hour.
You have the option of following two trails:
- Going towards the left, you can go through the beautiful luxury community of homes and play pretend (as we did lol). Picturing ourselves living in the high class and enjoying the high life. Also, on this route the water is much calmer as the homes block the wind flowing through.
- to the right you can kayak through the open bay area, enjoy the open waters and just bask in the never-ending sunshine.
We chose to go left, considering the strong winds. We took an hour roundtrip just cruising through. It's one hell of a workout, and would definitely do it again. If you're looking for just something quick and fun to do with some of your Gals in South Florida - consider this sweet kayaking spot.
Adventure Sports also offers Kite surfing lessons and paddelboarding - learn more here:

Campground Tour & Review | Larry and Penny Thompson Park | Miami, FL
I have to say that this was a great choice for a first time, extended stay campground. There were some hiccups in the beginning with the staff, but overall, I am very pleased. The sites themselves are large enough to not be disturbed by your neighbors and the morning staff is really very nice. The laundry facilities are always clean and the bathrooms were never dirty. If you get the chance to stay here, I would definitely encourage you to take the opportunity. Also, the location is perfect because it is so close to the Zoo Miami, which I have found to be my new favorite place.
Thank you so much for such an amazing campground.

Very windy morning. Apologies for shaky camera in some moments.
Kayaking at Matheson Hammock Park, Coral Gables, FL
Kayaking with Rich and Diane. A most wonderful area and great get away. Just outside of Miami. We saw Barracuda, Bone Fish, Rays, and a Manatee. Temperature was in the low 70's and a beautiful blue sky. Beginning of March 2014.
We were in Rides, both 135 and 115, and Diane was in her Mainer Propel.
