Our guests from Switzerland wanted to use their time wisely while in Croatia. By joining our Photo Safari tour they’ve decided to visit Medvednica mountain Nature park, located just 30 minutes away from the city of Zagreb. Beautiful day was only better after visiting Medvedgrad fortress, 600 y/o well of Kraljicin zdenac, seeing a couple of buzzards and enjoying the view from the very top of the mountain.

Sljeme Snow Run
We consider ourselves very lucky to have a mountain such as Medvednica only a few minutes ride from where we live in Zagreb. Naturally, that is our training polygon whenever we stay home for weekend. One route, in particular, showed to be great for trail running. Steep and short Bikčevičeva trail became favourite for many hikers and runners from Zagreb. Here we can meet many acquaintances and enjoy the presence of the outdoor community.
Time measured from the wooden gate at the bottom to the metal draining grill at the top became a standard measure for comparing performance way before Strava segments appeared.
Puntiarka hut at the top of the route is famous for delicious apple pies but both Mishka and me favour walnut rolls - best you can find. Medvednica is the Nature park with a long history of forestry care so the trees here are high and magnificent - don't forget to look up if you fall into the snow !

Bear Mountain (Zagreb, Croatia)
Watch the video with sound here:
Leaving Split, is almost like leaving home. Something about that beautiful Dalmatian Coast reminds me of the Caribbean. It's like it's in my blood. Since Goga has family in both Zagreb and Belgrade they've become the 2 cities we always end up visiting. So the idea is to find out more about each city every time we come back. So... in heading back to Zagreb we wanted to explore a bit more and while getting lost in the streets we ended up wandering north. Medvednica is the mountain in central Croatia, just north of Zagreb and marking the southern border of the historic region of Zagorje. The highest peak, at 1,035 m, is Sljeme. Most of the area is a nature park, a type of preservation lesser than a national park. The area of the park is 228.26 square kilometers and about 63% is covered with forest. The name Medvednica could be translated as bear mountain but is sometimes referred to as Sljeme which means summit. The climate on the Bear Mountain is typical for Central European mountain ranges. The average annual precipitation is around 1300 mm compared to Zagreb's 840 mm which contributes to the rich spring wells everywhere. There is snow cover approximately 100 days in a year but there is much more sunshine during the winter on the mountain than in Zagreb, so winter is the most visited season. Because of its proximity to Zagreb, Bear Mountain has many visitors, especially during weekends. Among the most popular sites is the Veternica cave with a 2,622 meter long main channel and a total length of 7,128 m of explored area. Since 1979 the cave has been protected by law as a geomorphologic monument of nature. Fourteen different species of bats hibernate the cave and it was named after the wind flow that appears at the entrance as a result of the temperature difference. As you walk along It's main path you find beautiful quote's from the bible carved out of wood and naturally blending in with the environment. That and the sounds of birds, crickets, gentle waterfalls and wind whispering through the trees make the park is a great place to reflect, think, get poetic, be artistic, be one with nature, spend time with family or significant others all while getting exercise. When I arrived in Zagreb, is when I first heard about the death of pop singer Amy Winehouse. Surrounded by the peace of this park I couldn't help but wonder how crazy her life must of been. She was a great singer and will be missed. I truly hope she has now found peace.

MTB Sljeme Croatia ✓ Bikčevićeva Puntijarka Leustek - Outdoors Croatia
MTB XC ride on Medvednica mountain above Zagreb, Croatia.

Zagreb (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Zagreb is the political and cultural heart of Croatia, an amiable capital city located at the intersection of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe and a city that holds many memories of the Danube Monarchy. Zagreb originated in the Middle Ages from two rival settlements on neighbouring hills, the bishop's seat of Kaptol which is dominated by its cathedral and the free city of Gradec which was its political centre. They both formed the city’s Upper Town. The cathedral dominates the Kaptol district, its two steeples towering above the old city. The city’s marvellous Botanical Garden contains an array of wonderful natural sights. It boasts ten thousand tree and plant varieties including alpine, Mediterranean, and the exotic. Small ponds with water plants are also included in the four point seven hectare gardens. An imposing arcaded facade forms the entrance to the Mirogoj Cemetery which is laid out as a park and is an artistic masterpiece. Here, leading sculptors built tombs for the country’s most famous personalities from the arts, culture and politics, including the grave of Franjo Tudjman. A narrow mountain road leads up to the Medvednica Nature Park, outside the city gates. The mediaeval Medvedgrad Fortress is a most striking and interesting attraction located in twenty three thousand hectares of natural landscape. Zagreb is a special city, unique, with a never-ending story, a city that has witnessed a thousand years and, due to its historic values, has become a European Capital Of Culture.

Rastoke Village I A Hidden Gem near Zagreb I Croatia Vlog I Ep 11
Rastoke is a very picturesque village about an hour drive from Zagreb. You'll pass this scenic village on the way from Zagreb to Plitvice National Park. The village has a series of cascading mini-waterfalls, colorful homes and a very laid back vibe to it. We stopped here for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery. Almost all the tours to Plitvice national park from Zagreb has a stop here. The village is everything worth a visit.
Landscape Park Maksimir and ZOO, Zagreb, Croatia
Park Maksimir is a unique object of park architectural heritage of City of Zagreb and Republic Croatia. It was raised on the final southern foothills of Medvednica at the end of 18 th and the first half of 19 th century.
It is the first public park in southeast Europe, and one of the first in the world. At the time of forming it was one of the most important park accomplishments of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Park Maksimir's founder was Zagreb 's Bishop MAKSIMILIJAN von VRHOVAC
Park Maksimir today is completely surrounded with town settlements. In this new surrounding Park Maksimir still represents a shelter for many plant and animal species.
Its value for the protection of endangered species connected to old hollows is significant because of preserved hundred-year-old oak forests. In Park Maksimir more than one hundred bird species are recorded. Other animal species connected to old forests are significant as well, like squirrels and some bat species, otherwise globally endangered animal species.
Besides forests, in Park Maksimir we can find meadows, lakes and streams, which also represent important habitats for various plants and animal, and in that way contribute to its biological diversity.
During the times Park Maksimir was formed, it was the most modern, elite and popular enterprise in the city and further. Today it represents a first rate antique living part of the city area.
Besides Park Maksimir as a whole, many other single objects in Park Maksimir are protected as cultural assets.
Maksimir lakes are a inseparable part of total landscape picture of the Park, which can be confirmed by the fact that they were formed parallel with the Park. Highly valuable esthetic and landscape characteristics of lakes, from the time they were formed have an artifact function as well, firstly as ponds, and than as recreational surfaces for boat rides.
During the past six lakes were formed in Park Maksimir, and today only four left. There is zoo located in the park area with many animal species.
If you come to Zagreb dont miss to visit Maksimir. Enjoy yourself walking trough forest and take a rest near the lakes.
