Trip to Milano, Italy: Milano Centrale | Milan Central Station
A short video from my trip to Milan, Italy, in March 2017. This is the majestic building of Milano Centrale or Milan Central Station. Milan Central is the largest railway station in Milan and one of the most important railway junctions in Italy. Construction of the building started in 1906 and completed 25 years later in 1931. The design has been modeled after Union Station in Washington D.C.
A Walk Around The Milan Central Rail Station / Milano Centrale
King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy laid the cornerstone of the new station on April 28, 1906, before a blueprint for the station had even been chosen. The last, real, contest for its construction was won in 1912 by architect Ulisse Stacchini, whose design was modeled after Union Station in Washington, DC, and the construction of the new station began.
Due to the Italian economic crisis during World War I, construction proceeded very slowly, and the project, rather simple at the beginning, kept changing and became more and more complex and majestic. This happened especially when Benito Mussolini became Prime Minister, and wanted the station to represent the power of the fascist regime. The major changes were the new platform types and the introduction of the great steel canopies by Alberto Fava; 341 m (1,119 ft) long and covering an area of 66,500 square metres.
Construction resumed in earnest in 1925 and on July 1, 1931 the station was officially opened in the presence of Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano.
Its façade is 200 metres wide and its vault is 72 metres high, a record when it was built. It has 24 platforms. Each day about 330,000 passengers use the station, totaling about 120 million per year.
The station has no definite architectural style, but is a blend of many different styles, especially Liberty and Art Deco, but not limited to those. It is adorned with numerous sculptures. “The ‘incongruous envelope of stone’ (Attilio Pracchi) of this gigantic and monumental building dominates Piazza Duca d’Aosta.” [2]
On September 25, 2006, officials announced a €100 million project, already in progress, to refurbish the station. Of the total cost, €20 million has been allocated to restore certain areas of high artistic value while the remaining €80 million will be used for more general improvements to the station to make it more functional with the current railway services. The project includes moving the ticket office and installing new elevators and escalators for increased accessibility.[3]
Train services[edit]
The station has 24 tracks. Every day about 320,000 passengers pass through the station using about 500 trains, for an annual total of 120 million passengers. The station is served by national and international routes, with both long-distance and regional lines. Daily international destinations include Bern, Lugano, Geneva, Zürich, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona and Munich.[4]
The station is also connected to Milan-Malpensa Airport through the Malpensa Express train service.

Milan Centrale Ticket Machine Beware of Pickpockets Buy Tickets to Genoa
In this video, I show you some scenes of Milan Centrale station. The pickpocket situation in Milan is so bad, the first thing the machine tells you is to 'Beware of Pickpockets. We arrived in Milan Centrale earlier that morning, from Milan Malpensa, after flying in from Singapore. (Singapore Airlines!) At Milan Centrale, I had to buy tickets for the next leg, from Milan Centrale to Genoa Principe. I used the Self Service machines. They accepted credit cards, but required a PIN. Thankfully I remembered my PIN. The second class ticket cost 21.5 Euros per adult.
It was quite a nightmare for us when we boarded the train to Genoa. First we had to get our luggage on board the train - pretty high steps. Then, we discovered there weren't proper areas to store our large bags. Worse, some pickpockets made an attempt on one of us, thank God she didn't manage to steal anything.
Beware, they work in groups of 2-3. One of them will try to distract you. In our case, she pretended to be a train passenger and appeared overly helpful with our luggage. The other(s) will then try to pick from your pocket, handbag or bagpack. As the train was quite crowded and busy, people were in close proximity.
We also discovered that we boarded the wrong carriage. When we took the train from Milan Malpensa to Milan Centrale, there were no assigned seats. But for this inter-city train (which went all the way to NICE), there were assigned seats and carriages. My video shows you a picture of the ticket, and more importantly how to read the ticket (CARROVA means carriage). Remember to board the correct carriage.
After all that excitement, we made it safely to Genoa Principe. Phew! Thank God.

Arrived at Milan Airport Train to Milan Centrale Go Pro
We arrive in Milan after flying in from Singapore, on Singapore Airlines. In this video, I show you wheeling our luggage. First we go to a cafe near the exit gates to get some coffee and light breakfast. Then we head on to get our tickets and hop on the Malpensa Express to go to Milan Centrale. The one-way ticket on the Malpensa express cost 13 Euros per person. Trains were twice and hour and the journey into Milan took almost an hour. The train made many stops. (Not really an Express train, if you are asking me).
We are making our way to Genoa, for a cruise.

Fast Trains in Italy: Train Pisa to Milan & Milano Centrale Railway Station to Malpensa Airport
Trains in Italy Video: A day of train journeys in Italy has me waiting at the wrong railway station at the end of a long day of driving and railway journeys, thank goodness for the friendly Italian hospitality.
I start the day by driving from San Gimignano in Tuscany to Pisa, where I drop of my hire car, then take the Pisamover shuttle train to Pisa Centrale Train Station.
From Pisa Centrale Railway Station I take a Trenitalia high speed train to Milan where my fast train arrives at Milano Centrale, still some distance from where I want to be which is near Malpensa Airport, so I take another Italian train from Milano Centrale to Malpensa Airport.
Unfortunately I should have got off the train one stop before Malpensa Airport, but thankfully the friendly hosts from my guest house save the day by driving through to the airport to collect me.
Milano Centrale Train Station - Milan, Italy
This is a short video of Milan Central Station in Italy. In summary, it's got nice old architectural elements, but lacks convenience. Two small elevators for handicapped people and there are no signs that show people where they are. Everything is in Italian, and even if you select English for the language on the ticket machines, you may still be confused.
In addition to normal urinal in the men's room, they have old style pooping toilets which are simply holes drilled into the ground where one can do his thing. To do number 2, you will have to squat over the hole and let loose. Just like many Eastern Asian bathrooms. Happy travels.

Malpensa Airport Milano centrale
The Malpensa Express is an airport rail service linking the city of Milan with Malpensa Airport, in the region of Lombardy, Northern Italy.
Trenord operates Malpensa Express services between Malpensa Airport and both Milan Cadorna and Milan Central stations.
Launched on 30 May 1999, the Malpensa Express originally ran between Malpensa Aeroporto and Milan Cadorna stations only. It was operated initially by Ferrovie Nord Milano and later by Trenitalia subsidiary LeNORD.
In late 2010, airport rail services to and from Malpensa were reorganised. Malpensa Express services to and from Milan Cadorna, operated by Trenord, continued to link the airport with the city. To coincide with the timetable change on 10 December 2010, however, new services to Milano Centrale were introduced.
In December 2016 a 3.4 kilometre extension of the line from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 opened. The new Malpensa Terminal 2 railway station is 200 metres north of the T2 arrivals hall, that is accessed by an outdoor covered walkway.
There are two kind of train services linking Milano Centrale to Malpensa Airport. One service (MXP) calls at Milano Porta Garibaldi (a station more often used than Centrale by commuters around the city), Milano Bovisa, Saronno and Busto Arsizio Nord; the other service ( R ) call at Milano Porta Garibaldi, Milano Bovisa, Saronno, Rescaldina, Castellanza, Busto Arsizio Nord and Ferno-Lonate Pozzolo. The running times of both services (Milan Central to Malpensa Airport Terminal 2) is about 57 minutes; they both have 2' class.
At Milano Centrale station, the Malpensa Express departs usually from tracks 1 or 2, and heads along the new railway section nicknamed the Umbrella Handle; the Malpensa Express then passes through Mirabello junction to join the line from Greco Pirelli to Milano Porta Garibaldi station (west of Milano Centrale station).
At Porta Garibaldi station, the Malpensa Express uses the new route (to the north of the old one), which crosses Farini yard. It reaches PM Ghisolfa and leaves the RFI network to enter tracks 1 and 2 at Milano Bovisa station. The rest of the Malpensa Express route from Bovisa-Politenico station to Malpensa is the same as for its counterparts from Cadorna.
The use of above trains for journeys starting or ending in Malpensa Airport Stations is allowed with a special price ticket, but is also possible a limited use with other kind of tickets usually valid for trains in Lombardia region.[9] Even the other rail service to Malpensa (TiLo S30) have a similar ticket limitation scheme for journeys starting or ending in Malpensa

Piazza Duca d'Aosta, Milan, Italy, Milano Centrale Railway Station and Pirelli Tower
Join us in Piazza Duca d’Aosta in Milan Italy in this video. There are two notable sites to see in this film, the Milano Centrale Railway Station and the Pirelli Tower. Both sites are iconic to Milan and both have a lot of interesting history.
Milano Centrale Railway Station is a busy place. It is the largest station in Europe by the volume of people that pass through it. Originally build in 1864, the building had to be renovated in 1931 to accommodate the growing traffic. Today nearly 330,000 people (500 trains) use this station each day, which adds up to 120 million each year. French architect Louis-Jules Bouchot, designed this building. It is typical of Parisian buildings common during this time. The original construction of this building moved very slowly because of the challenges Italy faced as they recovered from WWI. As the building progressed, it became more intricate and fancy.
Completed in 1958, the Pirelli Tower is a bit of a skyscraper marvel. It is one of the tallest buildings in Italy standing at 32 stories and stretching 127 m (417 ft) tall. It is also praised for breaking the norm of skyscrapers being built in block form. Its curtain wall structure and curved sides are unique to this skyscraper. Commissioned by Alberto Pirelli, owner of Pirelli Tire company, it was built on the site of the company’s first factory. This building symbolizes both Milan and Italy’s economic boom following WWII. This impressive building has inspired other architects to build similar structures, including the Met Life building in New York and the National Mutual West building in Auckland.
While this building stands tall today, it was the location of a plane crash in 2002. A pilot, who was running low on fuel decided to make an emergency landing at a nearby airport. Upon his decent he crashed into the building, killing himself and one person in the structure.
Milan, Italy - Milano Centrale Railway Station HD (2015)
Milano Centrale is the main railway station of Milan, Italy, and one of the main railway stations in Europe. The station is a railway terminus and was officially inaugurated in 1931 to replace the old central station (1864), which was a transit station and could not handle the new traffic caused by the opening of the Simplon tunnel in 1906.
It is served by high speed lines to Bologna (to Rome and Naples) and Turin, and conventional railways to Bologna, Turin, Venice, Genoa, Domodossola (for the Simplon and Bern), Chiasso (for the Gotthard and Zürich Hauptbahnhof) and Lecco.
