My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a Draw My Life video that explains a lot here:
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I currently film almost exclusively with my Samsung Galaxy S7:
How do you get those shots where you're walking or running? - A Joby Gorillapod for smartphones, like this:
You drop your phone a lot, how does it survive? - THIS CASE IS AMAZING:
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:
But what are you doing there? - Living it up!
Do you speak French? Oui.
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos:
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's short and I rarely tell anyone about it:
Can I come stay with you in Paris? - Have you seen my apartment? It's too small for me as it is!
OK, but how do I use the Metro when I'm there? - I made a handy video for you:

Tour of Montparnasse Tower, Paris
A video tour of our visit to Montparnasse Tower (or as it's called in French, Tour Montparnasse) in Paris, France. Filmed in November 2017. In this walking tour, I take you from nearby Montparnasse Metro station, through the streets, up the elevator / lift and to the viewing deck.
Going up to the Panorimic Observation Deck (or in French, the Observatoire Panoramique de la Tour Montparnasse) on the 56th floor, and especially then going further up to the outdoor rooftop terrace a couple floors above, was just amazing!
I'm not exaggerating when I say that seeing the beautiful bird's eye sky high view over Paris at sunset and at night was my favourite thing we did in Paris during our stay. I'd highly recommend it!
From the top of Montparnasse you can see gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower, as it glitters and sparkles on the hour every hour, and has it's beam of light that rotates and lights up the surroundings with its beacon at night. You can also see pretty much all the main attractions and tourist sites in Paris from up there if you look out for them, including the Arc de Triomphe, Centre Pompidou, the Seine, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur over in Montmartre, Le Grand Palais, Le Palais Royal, Jardin du Luxemebourg (Luxemburg gardens) and more. I tried to label most of them in the video :)

The Montparnasse district
The Montparnasse district
The Montparnasse district is situated on the Left Bank. It goes from the Necker hospital at the corner of rue de Sevres and Bd Montparnasse to the Closerie des Lilas at the corner of Bd Port Royal.
It owes its name Mont Parnasse to the students who, after 1725, nicknamed it after an artificial hill made of rubble between Bd du Montparnasse and Boulevard Raspail.
Montparnasse was at its height between the 20s and 50s, when it became the playground for famous painters such as Picasso, Soutine, Modigliani, Dali, Giacometti.... everyone who contributed to the glory of 20th century art....
La Coupole with its art deco design and 27 columns painted by the artists of the time, and other brasseries such as Le Select, Le Dome and La Rotonde in the Bd Montparnasse, were all frequented by famous people: Cocteau, Aragon, Josephine Baker, Malraux, Prevert, Edith Piaf, etc.
Kiki de Montparnasse, who was the model for Foujita, Modigliani and others and also Man Ray's mistress, was the district's muse.
A temple of literature and painting, Montparnasse was also the district of the Breton people who arrived at Gare Montparnasse and opened cafés and crêperies...and of course, if you like oysters and buckwheat waffles, you will undoubtedly choose to go there and try them.
If you fancy a pleasant stroll through the district...here's a recommended route:
Start in rue Campagne Première which crosses the Bd du Montparnasse and Bd Raspail and is still populated by a large number of artists' workshops. If you're a fan of the 1920s, you'll enjoy the authentic facades of the period.
And just nearby, if you fancy a scare, almost on the corner of Bd Raspail and Bd Edgar Quinet, take a walk down Rue Emile Richard, the only street in Paris that has no buildings for 400m...and with good reason, it's a simple cut-through between the two walls of the Montparnasse cemetery...and if you're approached by an attacker there's no possible escape route either left or right ...
Before taking a turn in the Jardin du Luxembourg - even if it is famous for being part of the Latin Quarter - go back up Bd du Montparnasse to Bd Port Royal and have lunch at the Closerie des Lilas and you might even find yourself sitting on a bench once occupied by Emile Zola or Théophile Gaultier...and, comfortably installed on the leather seats, surrounded by wood panelling, you can imagine yourself listening to Fitzgerald giving his first reading of The Great Gatsby to Hemingway....two regular customers ...
Finally, go down rue d'Assas, walking through the Jardins de l'Observatoire to reach the Jardin du Luxembourg which is home to the Senate. 106 statues representing, among many others, Jose Maria de Heredia, Beethoven, Flaubert and Chopin will fill your walk with musical and poetic dreams. The garden designed by Marie de Medici with its different areas - the orangery, pear orchard and large lake - is a haven of peace right in the centre of the Left Bank.
And finally, don't forget that Montparnasse also welcomed some of the most famous political exiles such as Lenin and Trotsky! Because the Left Bank is much more than a simple bank of the river Seine...it's the home of free and creative thinking for discerning Parisians!
Enjoy your walk!

A Walk Around Gare Montparnasse (Train Station), Paris
Gare Montparnasse (Montparnasse Station), officially Paris-Montparnasse, is one of the six large Paris railway termini, in the 14th and 15th arrondissements of Paris. It was opened in 1840, rebuilt in 1852, and then rebuilt completely further south in 1969. A steam train crashed through the station in 1895; there is a well-known photograph of the event, and full scale reproductions outside a museum chain in South America.
It is used by intercity TGV trains to the west and south-west of France including Tours, Bordeaux, Rennes and Nantes, and by suburban and regional services on the Transilien Paris – Montparnasse routes. There is also a metro station.

A Brasserie Fit for a President (my experience at la Rotonde in Paris Montparnasse)
Today I am taking you on a tour of the cafe brasserie la Rotonde in Paris Montparnasse. This famous establishment serves only classic french food prepared the traditional way as well as beautiful seafood platters. the produce used are the best in their categories.
Unlike many establishments in Montparnasse, La Rotonde has retained much of its bohemian charm and continues in operation to this day as a popular spot for the Parisian crowds.
On the evening of the first round of the French presidential election, 2017, Emmanuel Macron and his entourage celebrated the result at La Rotonde - Brasserie .

Places to see in ( Paris - France ) Montparnasse
Montparnasse is an area of Paris, France, on the left bank of the river Seine, centred at the crossroads of the Boulevard du Montparnasse and the Rue de Rennes, between the Rue de Rennes and boulevard Raspail.
The area also gives its name to:
Gare Montparnasse: trains to Brittany, TGV to Rennes, Tours, Bordeaux, Le Mans; rebuilt as a modern TGV station;
The large Montparnasse – Bienvenüe métro station;
Cimetière du Montparnasse: the Montparnasse Cemetery, where Charles Baudelaire, Constantin Brâncuși, Jean-Paul Sartre, Man Ray, Simone de Beauvoir, Samuel Beckett, and Susan Sontag are buried
Tour Montparnasse, a lone skyscraper
The Pasteur Institute is located in the area. Beneath the ground are tunnels of the Catacombs of Paris. Students in the 17th century who came to recite poetry in the hilly neighbourhood nicknamed it after Mount Parnassus, home to the nine Muses of arts and sciences in Greek mythology.
The hill was levelled to construct the Boulevard Montparnasse in the 18th century. During the French Revolution many dance halls and cabarets opened their doors. The area is also known for cafés and bars, such as the Breton restaurants specialising in crêpes (thin pancakes) located a few blocks from the Gare Montparnasse.
Montparnasse became famous in the 1920s, referred to as les Années Folles (the Crazy Years), and the 1930s as the heart of intellectual and artistic life in Paris. From 1910 to the start of World War II, Paris' artistic circles migrated to Montparnasse as alternative to the Montmartre district which had been the intellectual breeding ground for the previous generation of artists. The Paris of Zola, Manet, France, Degas, Fauré, a group that had assembled more on the basis of status affinity than actual artistic tastes, indulging in the refinements of Dandyism, was at the opposite end of the economic, social, and political spectrum from the gritty, tough-talking, die-hard, emigrant artists that peopled Montparnasse.
While the area attracted people who came to live and work in the creative, bohemian environment, it also became home for political exiles such as Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Porfirio Diaz, and Simon Petlyura. But, World War II forced the dispersal of the artistic society, and after the war Montparnasse never regained its splendour. Wealthy socialites like Peggy Guggenheim, an art collector who married artist Max Ernst, lived in the elegant section of Paris but frequented the studios of Montparnasse, acquiring pieces that would come to be recognized as masterpieces that now hang in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, Italy. The Musée du Montparnasse opened in 1998 at 21 Avenue du Maine and closed in 2015. Although operating with a tiny city grant, the museum was a non-profit operation.
