Mt. Airy Forest Mountain Bike Trail Open
Grab your bike and come check it out!
The City of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Park Board, and partner organization CORA (Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance) held a formal dedication to open the first 1.4-mile section of the new Mt. Airy Multi-Use Trail, which includes mountain biking. The project was celebrated with an official ribbon cutting ceremony including Mayor John Cranley, the Park Board Commissioners, CORA and the Mt. Airy community.
This first phase of trail represents 1,038 hours of volunteer labor carried out by approximately 80 individuals. The dedicated volunteers cleared approximately six acres of honeysuckle, trail renovation and construction, including new stone drainage crossings, water diverters, and stone retaining walls, removal of ash trees and a gate and fencing at the trailhead. Phase two will total 1.5 miles and work is underway now.

Mt. Airy Forest Ridge Run 2018
One state closer to my goal of running a race in all 50 of the United States of America the beautiful! Mt. Airy is a trail park in Cincinnati, Ohio and is apparently the largest system of trails in any major city. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and such a green time of year that this race was really amazing. I didn't feel my strongest on this very technical course, but I still enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend this one! :)
Dirt Days Trail Series:
Mount Airy Forest mountain bike trail was a long and winding project, 20 years in the making
Mountain bikers and trail advocates from across the region braved Tuesday's sweltering heat to see a vision 20 years in the making finally become reality. During a ceremony in front of advocates and reporters, city leaders and the mountain bike community broke ground on what will become a 4.5-mile natural-surface trail -- as opposed to a paved path -- winding through a modest pocket of Mount Airy Forest.
Mt Airy Forest Trail Running

As a corporate video producer I sometimes travel for work. In the last quarter of 2016 I made it a goal to explore a new running trail or park wherever I went.
For my first trip, I put out a request for recommendations to the Trail and Ultra Running Facebook group. I would be in Cincinnati for the day (no overnighting because it’s only a day trip from Indy). Mt. Airy Forest quickly came up as a spot to check out.
My client shoot lasted from 10am to 1pm. I then hopped in my car, ate a quick snack while driving, and found myself in the forest a half hour later. I only had a brief time to explore the park, but I’m so glad I did! It’s clear that this forest has so much more to offer than I was able to experience. I will definitely be back here next time I am in Cincy.
If you have a favorite trail in your city let me know what it is in the comments below! I will keep a list of places to check off if I ever find myself in your town.
Cheers and happy running!
Chris
Production Notes:
This video was primarily shot with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver in 1080p 30fps. The handful of drone shots you see were filmed with the Hover Camera Passport drone. It's video isn't as sharp as the GoPro but it let's you get some shots that would otherwise not happen. I'm happy to answer any other techy production questions anyone has!

Mt. Airy Forest to get a mountain bike trail
MT. AIRY, Ohio (WKRC) - After at least two decades of requests from cyclists, the city of Cincinnati will get its first mountain bike trail.
The Cincinnati Park Board just gave the green light to a project in Mt. Airy Forest.
They'll partner with the Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance, CORA, on a pilot 4.6-mile trail.
It will be built using a $15,000 grant from outdoors retailer REI and won't cost the city any money upfront.
CORA also pledged to do the upkeep on the trail.
Mitchell Memorial Forest Mountain Bike Trail Review by MTB Cincinnati
Mitchell Memorial Forest is located 25 minutes northwest of downtown Cincinnati in Cleves, Ohio, and is one of the Great Parks of Hamilton County The trails at Mitchell Memorial are open year round with the exception of when it’s muddy. Like all other CORA trails you can check its current condition by visiting CORA’s website. During peak season there’s a $3 admission charge to the park or you can purchase an annual pass for $10. The multi-use trails are closed to dogs preventing unwanted land mines from being flung all over you or your bike.
Driving back the park’s main entrance, you’ll find the Tall Pines, parking lot a ways back on the left, next to the A loop trail-head, complete with a trail map. The A loop eventually connects you to the B loop or you can more easily access it farther up the park’s main access road.
The cross-country style, multi directional trails are comprised primarily of single-track that gets pretty tight in some areas. Both loops offer a generous amount of long flowing sections with some natural roller sections that really add to the fun of riding at Mitchell. Built to IMBA standards, while there are some moderately challenging climbs and fun decants there isn’t a lot in the way super steep intermediate level rider.
The 3.9 mile A loop seemed to offer a bit more opportunity to get rad with its root drops, log crossings, and rolling trail features. It’s a great time for more advanced riders and easy enough for beginners or younger riders, with a little bit of caution. The 4.2 mile B loop offers a higher level of technicality due to its numerous rocky sections. While experienced riders often appreciate the extra challenge. Those less skilled at picking good lines and timing pedal strokes will suffer a higher number of peal strikes. If you’re a newer rider we’d recommend conquering the A loop before you move onto the B loop. Both trails connect allowing you to turn them into one larger loop.
Overall mileage and difficulty are somewhere in the middle for trails in our area. Difficulty wise, we’d compare Mitchell to trails like East Fork or England Idlewild, although the Rocky sections on the B loop make Mitchell a bit more technically demanding. Their layout, the terrain, and an excellent reputation for being well maintained, are all reasons why Mitchell Memorial Forest is so popular with many local riders, and why this place is so near the top of our list of local trails to get back to and ride.

Options for iconic Mount Airy water tanks include demolition
MOUNT AIRY, Ohio (WKRC) - The Mount Airy water tanks, which stand over Colerain Avenue and North Bend Road look like they could be part of a castle.
Their future is up for discussion and many neighbors believe they need to stay as is.
Built before the great depression, the water tanks in Mount Airy are considered a landmark.
It's a symbol of Cincinnati, said
Former Cincinnati City Councilman and Mount Airy Resident Kevin Flynn focuses on one of three options presented by the owners, Greater Cincinnati Water Works, at a town meeting.
“It could get taken down,” said Flynn.
The other options are replacing the medieval castle-like landmark or making renovations.
But Flynn says taking down the structure has been in the talks for the past six years.
“Why would you want to destroy something of this beauty, of this significance? Because they didn't do their job in the first place and maintain it?” asked Flynn.
I don't think they should demolish it, I think they should fix it up,” said Fredrick Luther who also says the company should consider something more “out of the box”.
Show people the inside, make a little money off of it,” said Luther.
Flynn doesn't disagree and he wants people, like Luther, to rally together.
It just doesn't seem right,” said Flynn.
Flynn says although a decision hasn't been made by the town council, it’s still a 33 percent chance it could get taken down.
