Kakwa Provincial Park - First Descent of Jarvis Creek - Packrafting in Northern British Columbia

We hiked over the mountains in Kakwa Provincial Park in British Columbia and packrafted out Jarvis Creek. Along the way we saw a bear, glaciers, a river flowing into a cave, and a valley that people rarely visit. This was one of the more challenging packraftng trips I've done because we went into it without a lot of information. I could not find detailed satellite images of it Jarvis Creek We knew there were some rapids but that was it. Also I was not sure the route I'd planned over the mountains would work or whether we'd get cliffed out and have to turn around. In the end the route worked and it was an amazing trip but it's not for beginners.

Hiking trails and ski trails are located just off this resort. Mt Robson Provincial Park is 1 hours’ drive away. The chalet features a fireplace and a view of the Rocky Mountains. A kitchenette is available in the chalet at Twin Peaks Resort.

Every Year me and my friends do a trip we like to call our “Boys Trip.” This year we wanted to do something Unlike anything we have done before. After looking into many ideas we voted on the Mount Edziza Hike. Mount Edziza is a stratovolcano, in Northern British Columbia. It’s covered in glaciers, surrounded by cones and has a vast plateau. Our trip consisted of a float plane ride into Buckley Lake. A 75 km hike up and over the top plateau, and past the many cones such as Eves Cone, Coffee Crater and Cocoa Crater. A a float plane ride out of Mowdade Lake. It was 7 awesome days of hiking seeing some of the most wild untouched land British Columbia has to offer. Great Canadian Parks #18- Kitlope Provincial Park, B.C.
This is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest in the world. Hidden in an isolated area of northwestern British Columbia, the rugged terrain of the Kitlope is cloaked in old growth trees, many of which are up to 800 years old and 10 feet in diameter. North Coast Trail - Cape Scott Provincial Park, BC Canada
This highlights our week-long hiking trip to the northwestern part of Vancouver Island. NCT(North Coast Trail) is often compared to the more popular WCT(West Coast Trail). Some say NCT is harder in terms of rugged trail conditions often billed by NCT`s pamphlets as a 'true backcountry adventure', some say WCT is harder in terms of distance and ladders. We can't compare since we haven't completed WCT, but we chose NCT because it was more remote, and no reservation was needed.
The first three days from Shushartie Bay to Shuttleworth Bight featured terrain alternating between deep mud, fallen trees, roots and ropes to climb up and over steep sections. We wish we could take more pictures or videos of those parts but the trail was intense and it proved difficult to do that. Below, you`ll find our notes about each day of the hike.
We were impressed that even though the trail is remote, the facilities are maintained surprisingly well. Each outhouse was clean and always had toilet paper! We were a bit worried about our four season tent would be too large for the tent pads. We`ve found our tent to typically be a tight fit for the alpine hike tent pads. The tent pads at the North Coast Trail were large enough to accommodate our tent. :)
Day 1: Shushartie Bay to Skinner Creek 8.1km (5-7 hrs.)
BC Parks website describes this trail as the most challenging trail of the entire route. But it wasn't as difficult as we thought it would be. We expected the worst. Other people who joined the same boat actually went 3km ahead to Nahwitti campsite. We saw a wolf on the beach in the distance later in the evening. Skinner Creek flows well. Noseeum lurk here.
Day 2: Skinner Creek to Cape Sutil 7.9km (3.5-5.5 hrs.)
In our opinion, this is the hardest section of the entire route. The series of ups and downs dressed with deep mud and tree roots along the inland trail made us feel it really is hard. The cable car ride at Nahwitti River was fun. Some pocket beaches are passable during low tides. There is a slow flowing creek that thins out in rivulets over the beach before joining the ocean.
Day 3: Cape Sutil to Shuttleworth Bight (Irony Creek) 7.8km (4-6 hrs.)
Difficult hiking continues, but switches from inland to beach trail giving a bit of variety. As four tent pads are already full, we set up our tent at the beach. Later, a man advised us that high tide would be six inches higher that night, so we moved our tent up at a higher location. In the morning, we found our tent was splashed but we were lucky to be dry. If you beach camp here, do pay close attention to the tides. Irony creek flows well to provide clear water.
Day 4: Shuttleworth Bight to Laura Creek 11.8 km (4-7 hrs.)
This section is rated as moderate, however walking with heavy backpacks on cobble for 7-8 km proved to take a toll on our ankles and knees. Laura Creek is an excellent water source. There are only 4 tent pads. Overflow campers would have to camp on the beach.
Day 5: Laura Creek to Nissen Bight then Nels Bight 13 km (4-6 hrs.)
Laura Creek to Nissen Bight is the last portion of North Coast Trail, it still had the obligatory mud, corduroy and roots but it was much easier than what the first three days had to offer. Beyond Nissen, the trail meets with the older, better maintained Cape Scott Trail. The trail`s transition from rugged to easy becomes evident when heading towards the junction from Nissen Bight. Fresh water at Nels Bight is of a shade of silt similar to Cape Sutil's.
Day 6: Nels Bight to Guise Bay then Eric Lake 21.8km (6-8 hrs.)
We took a short trek to Guise Bay. Guise Bay holds a spectacular view of opposite-facing twin beaches, bridged together by dunes of sand. Guise Bay faces the south and Experiment Bight faces the north. The area is smaller than both Nissen and Nels Bight but it had a peaceful quietness to it. This would make a beautiful camping spot.
The trail to Eric Lake is easy. Boardwalks seemed to go on indefinitely which can be nice when dry, but slippery when wet especially for the boardwalks and corduroy dressed in moss.
Eric Lake offers 8 tent pads. When the creek by the campsite is dry, water can be obtained by going a 1/2 km towards the trailhead, you see a little creek underneath the boardwalk. You could climb down and get your feet wet. If you had a bucket, it would be easy. This area is also known for very old Sitka Spruce. There is a Giant Sitka Spruce tree in this area, right along the boardwalk.
Day 7: Eric Lake to San Josef Bay then to Parking lot 7.3 km (1.5-2 hrs.)
This was the easiest section. San Josef Bay is wheelchair accessible so the trail is very flat. Because it`s a bay, the water is quieter than any other beach we visited along the way. There are some interesting spots you can visit during low tide. Low tide features sea caves and sea stacks. Note that the parking lot has no water source.

1991 10 10 Tsitika must be saved
This is a 47 minute, 1991 video about the fight to protect the lower Tsitika Valley from logging. The Tsitika watershed is located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. Though one clearcut was completed by logging company MacMillan Bloeldel on the edge of the lower Tsitika, despite persistant protest by activists, the area was eventually granted provincial park protection in 1995 and is now off limits to logging.

We spent 2 days hiking this stunning Provincial Park. We get to see jagged mountain peaks, azure lakes and alpine meadows. During autumn the larch trees turn this rich bright yellow colour. Beautiful!
