Crap Beer Tours #1 Mt. Carmel Brewing Company
Mt. Carmel Brewing Company is a family owned business, started by its founders Mike and Kathleen Dewey. In 2005 what started as a hobby experiment, blew up into something much greater than that. With Mike?s engineering background, the two decided it was time to take their hobby to the next level. Starting with growlers and one blend, they sold their product to local retail locations. It didn?t take long to catch on, and the great taste of Mt. Carmel is now enjoyed with 16 different blends over time, and retail and draft locations all over the state of Ohio. We got together with Mike to ask him how everything started, and what new things are coming up in the world of Mt. Carmel Brewing Company...
More bars carrying local, craft beers than traditional lagers
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - In the Queen City, beer is king.
Cincinnati has always had a love affair with beer. After all, very few cities produced (and drank) as much beer as Cincinnatians. And from Moerlein to Hudepohl to Wiedemann -- we drank local brews.
The beer scene is thriving again and the whole country is taking notice, turning Cincinnati into a beer haven once again.
Earlier in October, Ohio breweries took home 15 medals at the Great American Beer Festival. That's more than any other border state to Ohio. Indiana was the closest with nine.
Talking with people who make and sell beer, nobody saw this kind of success coming a decade ago.
I think it’s pretty sweet to see Cincinnati breweries do so well, said Devin Fields, Pies & Pints' beer buyer.
Inside Pies & Pints at The Banks, there are 36 beers on tap. The majority are craft beers and most are from Cincinnati or the region.
We have a really good variety of beers on tap. I try to have a little something for everybody, Fields said.
One of those options: a beer from Taft's Brewing Company.
Being slightly, much smaller than the large, large breweries in the country, we are able to respond to consumer demands and change our products, said Jared Hamilton, the director of brewing operations at Taft's.
And that's good for business. Inside bars, your grandpa's draft is going stale. Bright colors, crazy logos and bold flavors are taking over.
I had no clue it would be anything like this. This entire industry has been in a pressure cooker for the past 10 years. We’ve gone from a few microbreweries in town to more than 50 in the region, Hamilton said.
Hamilton's beer journey began 10 years ago Monday with an email hoping to get a job at Mt. Carmel Brewing Company. Today, he's making sure Taft's beer is filling cups from Kentucky and northern Ohio.
To me, it’s all about quality. Quality is going to dictate the quantity. The more quality we have, the better for the consumer, better for the brewers and better for everybody, he said.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association says craft brewers brought nearly $1 billion to the state in 2018. That's up 39 percent from the last time a study was conducted four years ago.
Liquid Gold: More craft beer companies pouring into Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - They're pouring into the Greater Cincinnati area like fine-crafted beer. You might call it liquid gold.
The brewpub industry in Southwest Ohio is overflowing – it has increased eight-fold in the past eight years.
Guys like Dave Emery, who started in his garage, and is opening Big Ash Brewing in Anderson Township in early September, are a part of the movement.
Eight years ago we got 28 guys together, each chipped in 200 bucks and we bought some equipment and some ingredients and we all started brewing together,” says Emery.
Just down the Little Miami River in California, Ohio, you'll find another group of entrepreneurs pouring their hearts into a new brewpub, Dead Low Brewing, scheduled to open in late September.
We really wanted a community destination that could serve a wide variety of people,” says Dead Low Brewing’s Christine Hall.
The Ohio Craft Brewers Association reported in 2018 that craft brewers contributed a $967 million and 8,300 jobs to the Ohio economy. In 2011 there were 45 independent breweries in Ohio, now there are more than 300.
Greater Cincinnati is home to 55 of them.
Nationwide, Food & Wine reported the cities with the greatest thirst for breweries are Portland, Maine with 18 breweries per 50,000 people, Asheville, North Carolina, with 17 per 50,000 and Bend, Oregon with 16.
Cincinnati is 25th, with 6 breweries per 50,000 residents. You might think that those already in business in the area would be upset to see startups flooding the market. But that's not the case. They say the more beer the better.
We keep on the path we're on and hopefully you have people coming from all over the United States to come see this great thing we have going on in Cincinnati, said 50 West Brewing Company’s Bobby Slattery.
Slattery said it's not just about a creative menu and crafting beer, it's about creating a community.
Our bike shop, our running group, our canoeing and kayaking, our volleyball league. We like to come up with as many ways we can bring that community together and at the end of the day we hope you end up with a beer.
Jerry and Karen Weber agree. We caught up with them as they were heading into 50 West for lunch. They say they appreciate the local nature of the restaurant, and of course, the beer.
I love the beers. I love the variety,” says Karen. “And they're fresh,” adds Jerry.
Ohio is the fourth largest independent beer producer in the country, crafting 43 million gallons of beer in 2018, mostly fueled by our three biggest breweries - Samuel Adams, Great Lakes and Rhinegeist.

Segment from US Bank Business Watch presented by the Cincinnati Business Courier.
Union Township businesswoman speaks at Kasich announcement
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKRC) -- One of the speakers at Governor John Kasich's presidential campaign announcement was a small business owner from right here in the Tri-State. Kathleen Dewey is one of the owners of the Mt. Carmel Brewing Company in Union Township, Clermont County. I'm not here as a Republican or as a Democrat. I'm here as a political independent. I vote with my conscience. I'm here because my husband and I are among the many people across this state who have been able to push their dreams forward, not just because of our own hard work, and the work of our employees, but because of John Kasich's ideas and hard work, too. Thank you, governor. The governor paid a visit to the brewery in 2012 after the passage of Ohio house bill 243. The bill allowed breweries to sell beer both by the glass and for carryout on the premises without requiring the purchase of an additional liquor license. The high cost for the additional license was prohibitive for many small breweries.
Starkbierfest 2015: Listermann Brewing free festival featuring only local breweries
With the days turning longer and warmer, it’s time to say goodbye to winter and strong beers as local brewers make way for summer brews. To help send off the strong beers of the colder months, Listermann Brewing is back with its third year of Starkbierfest. The annual strong beer festival features only local craft brewers.

Ohio Breweries - Interview with Author Rick Armon
Ohio is the 5th largest brewing state in America, but it doesn't get the same recognition as Colorado, Washington or California. Why is that? Journalist Rick Armon travelled the state from corner to corner to visit all 49 Ohio breweries. What were his picks for the best beer in the state and did he gather any insight into what it takes to open a brewery?
TECHNICAL ISSUE - My apologies to Rick Armon and our viewers for the wide shot that was out of focus. I tried to sharpen it up a bit, but it was too bad. I guess that's what happens when you are the host, the lighting guy, the audio guy and the cameraman.

Local colleges tap into craft beer boom
CINCINNATI (Sydney Benter) -- It takes more than the right ingredients to make beer. It also takes lots of know-how and with the brewery business booming in the Tri-State these days, there aren't enough people who know how. You used to be able to count Cincinnati's craft breweries on one hand but now there are dozens. It's a blessing and a curse.Right now if somebody locally wants to hire--a brewery wants to hire an experienced brewer that's already here locally, the only way they can do it is hire away somebody from another brewery, says Carla Gesell-Streeter. She's spearheading Cincinnati State's new Brew 100 class. The professor and beer blogger will cover beer history and beer styles.Community college is really good at figuring out whether their workforce has needs and trying to fill those needs and so that's what we're looking at. Students are lining up for courses like this. A class offered at Mount St. Joseph this month is already full and there's a wait list. Those students will take a field trip to Tap and Screw Brewery in Westwood. It's chemicals, it's yeast, it's biological--there's a lot of applied science that goes on here, says Tom Lorenz, owner of Tap and Screw. He says there's plenty to learn and plenty of jobs to be had, Whether it's bartenders or servers or distributors or brewers, it's not just people making the beer, there's a whole raft of occupations that come out of this. Because demand is high, Cincinnati State may offer another section of Brew 100 this fall.
