The Ravenna National Museum (Museo Nazionale di Ravenna) is situated in the monumental complex of San Vitale and contains many important archaeological fragments, such as funeral steles and Roman epigraphs, and some collections of minor arts. The original part of the Museum's heritage was collected during the 18th century, thanks to the patient research and care of the erudite monks of the big abbeys of the city.
Graceful Renaissance bronze statuettes, an important collection of ivory pieces, a rich collection of icons, a section of ceramic works and a fascinating collection of ancient weapons are on display on the first floor, surrounded by an elegant Benedictine architecture. Oriental marble capitals, decorated sarcophagi and other manufacts dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries are among the most prestigious finds of the Museum.
The most famous manufacts are those belonging to the Early Christian and Byzantine monuments listed by Unesco as World Heritage sites, such as the transennae and the cross of San Vitale or the preparatory cartoon to the mosaic of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. The Museum also hosts an important series of frescoes dating back to the 14th century, a masterpiece by Pietro da Rimini that was taken from the Church of Santa Chiara in Ravenna.

***** (UNESCO) RAVENNA MUSEO NAZIONALE

The National Museum of Ravenna, established in 1885, was housed in the prestigious setting of the former Benedictine Monastery of San Vitale, in the early twentieth century. The original component of the museum consisted of the collections made during the eighteenth century, by the Camaldolese Monks, and were also enriched through donations, acquisitions, discoveries and excavations. The museum currently appears to have a set of heterogeneous collections, divided into three main groups: Lapidary, finds from excavations and collections of art. The Lapidary which is located mostly along the path of the two cloisters of the monastery and consists of an interesting collection of epitaphs and tombstones and stone artifacts from Roman, early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. In the upper floors are the archeological materials and mosaics from the area surrounding area of Ravenna and the collection of so-called minor arts. Also part of the collection are bronze plaques, ivory, symbols, weapons and armor as well as ceramics. In addition, the museum also houses the important fourteenth-century frescoes taken from the ancient church of Santa Chiara in Ravenna done by Pietro da Rimini.

Places to see in ( Ravenna - Italy ) Archiepiscopal Museum Ravenna
The Archiepiscopal Museum is located in Ravenna, Italy, next to the Baptistry of Neon and behind the Duomo of Ravenna. In the museum relics of early Christian Ravenna are preserved, including fragments of mosaic from the first cathedral church, and the chapel of Sant'Andrea, dating from the Gothic kingdom.
The main room, on entering, contains lapidary inscriptions as HIC REQUIESCIT IN PACE VIR SBL SEDA IGNUCUS ('Here lies in peace that eminent man Seda the Eunuch'), CUBICULARIUS or 'Bedchamberlain' to Theodoric the Great, buried 541 AD. Beneath this, by the window, a reliquary for the martyred saints Quiricus and Julietta, whose remains were carried from Tarsus, the birthplace of Saint Paul, to Auxerre and from thence to Ravenna. The depictions on its four facings are in keeping with the theme of donation: Galla Placidia placed it in the church of San Giovanni Battista (not to be confused with the church of the 'Evangelista'). They are:
Christ giving the Tables of the Law to St. Peter, with Paul standing by him;
Daniel in the lions' den, with the prophet Habakkuk offering him a loaf and fishes;
The Three Wise Kings bringing their gifts to the infant Christ;
The women sitting below at His empty tomb.
The marble rosette on the facing wall is a Paschal calendar of the 6th century. Its purpose was to fix the movable feast of Easter in such a way that it might be celebrated everywhere in Christendom on the same day - no easy matter when East and West were using different calendars: the Eastern Church used the Hebrew lunar calendar, while the Western church followed the sun's cycle. Despite the decrees of the Council of Nicea in 325 AD and the tables of Theophilus, in this, as in all matters of faith, people followed their own loyalties. This calendar follows the eastern lunar cycle: LV on the outer rim, followed by AN indicates the phase of its 19-year cycle; the date then for Easter is written in each recurring phase from 532 AD to 626 AD.
The mosaics are the few fragments left of what covered the apse of the first church: they are not Roman originals but of the early 12th century. The most beautiful and intact is that of the Madonna, praying in the eastern manner; other fragments give some idea of its composition - the life of Sant'Apollinare, the patron saint and evangeliser of Ravenna; scenes of the Resurrection; Saints Peter and Paul. On entering the room to the right, there is a little stele depicting Christ the Good Shepherd by a tree: it is the tombstone of Antiphon, who died aged 17 years, 5 months and 12 days, sometime at the end of the 2nd/beginning of the 3rd century, long before the Edict of Tolerance, and is thus the earliest Christian record in Ravenna. The red porphyrian man (drawing or sheathing his sword?), headless, handless, footless, may be the Emperor Theodosius. It recalls the statue of the Tetrarchs outside the Doge's Palace in Venice, gripping onto power.
The jewel of the collection is the Ivory Cathedra, the bishop's seat of the Byzantine era (6th century), considered among the finest pieces of ivory carving in Western art. It is placed in what was the tower of Porta Salustra, the Roman gateway which commanded the southern entrance along the Cardis. It is the work of different hands and, even allowing for the missing panels, it still remains a visible masterpiece: the front bench, with the figures of Saint John the Baptist flanked by the Evangelists and a frieze work of peacocks, lions, goats and deer among vines, is especially fascinating; the backrest represents scenes from the birth of Christ, including Mary proving her virginity by immersion; on the other side, the miracles of Christ, his baptism and entry into Jerusalem; the armrests depict the Old Testament life of Joseph, reading from left to right (for the sitter).

The MAR - Museum of Art of the City of Ravenna is a museum located in Ravenna . It is located within the monumental complex of Loggetta Lombardesca which takes its name from the 16th century loggia. Built at the beginning of the 16th century , the cloister of the Abbey of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Porto takes its name from the Loggia del Giardino , better known as Loggetta Lombardesca , by the sampling and Lombard workers who worked there under the direction of Tullio Lombardo .
Of the original building, which from the age of Napoleonic suppressions has undergone several reconversions of use until the restoration of the early 70s of the twentieth century , remains the cloister with Renaissance proportions, the layout of the spaces and the elegant five arches, which has become the symbol and the monumental emergency of the entire complex.
Currently the Loggetta Lombardesca hosts the Museum of Art of the city of Ravenna , established in 2002 by the municipality of Ravenna , formerly the Municipal Art Gallery of Ravenna. The museum preserves a significant nucleus of more than three hundred works from the fourteenth to the twentieth century , of great interest for the documentation of the artistic scenario in Romagna in relation to influences and presences coming from the Veneto, Emilia and Ferrara areas, without neglecting the table paintings of the XIV and XV century by Lorenzo Monaco , Taddeo di Bartolo , Antonio Vivarini , as well as the significant presence of Giorgio Vasari in Ravenna in 1548 documented by the Lamentation over Christ deposed by the cross , or the paintings by famous 17th century paintersincluding Guercino and Carlo Cignani , up to the funeral slab of Guidarello Guidarelli , by Tullio Lombardo .
Among the museum's works exhibited at the museum, the most significant nucleus consists of a series of 20 mosaics , accompanied by preparatory cartoons, made for an exhibition that took place in Ravenna in 1959 . The initiative was joined by Marc Chagall and Georges Mathieu , Renato Guttuso , Afro Basaldella and Mirko Basaldella , Corrado Cagli , Giuseppe Capogrossi , Bruno Saetti , Renato Birolli , Giuseppe Santomaso , Emilio Vedova , Mattia Moreni and Antonio Corpora., Mario De Luigi and Massimo Campigli .
To this historical collection are added other contemporary mosaics, mosaic translations from works by Mimmo Paladino , Giosetta Fioroni , Balthus and Michelangelo Antonioni , Luigi Ontani and Eugenio Carmi , but also works made by the same artists as Vedova, Marco De Luca , Marco Bravura , Germano Sartelli , Paolo Raccagni , Francesca Fabbri , Luca Barberini , CaCO3 and many others. The collection is constantly expanding, also thanks to the two-year GAEM international contest - Giovani Artisti e Mosaico
