Located at 12 Rue du Temple, Reims, France, Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the oldest ‘modern’ champagne houses. Founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Mulron, Veuve Clicquot is credited with making champagne the wine of choice for the bourgeoisie and royalty. The 1811 Comet Vintage of Veuve Clicquot is recognized as the first modern champagne vintage.
The son of Philippe Clicquot-Mulron married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin in 1798. He died in 1805 leaving his bride in charge of the Company. Madame Clicquot, the first woman to take over a champagne house, continued the innovations in champagne production instituted by her Father-In-Law and Husband. She is credited with the biggest breakthrough in champagne production that led to its mass production, the rising rack. The Veuve Clicquot is sad to have made the first rosé champagne, and Madame Clicquot receives the accolades for perfecting it.
Madame Clicquot working in tandem with her cellar master, Antoine de Muller, immersed herself in the production of champagne and was a marketing expert in her time. She saw to it that the royal courts throughout Europe had access to her champagnes making it a sought-after wine across the continent. To this day Veuve Clicquot is distinguished by its yellow label, the same label that kings and queens recognized.
In 1987 the Veuve Clicquot brand of quality champagne was purchased by the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group.
On your visit to Reims, France a visit to the large centuries old cellars of Veuve Clicquot is in order. This famed House of Champagne offers three different public tours as well as seven private tours by reservation. Each of the public and private tours explore distinct aspects of this pioneering champagne house and all end with a tasting of selected vintages. At Moet &Chandon, we have tens of millions of bottles stocked. My job is to give a stir to the bottles while they are on racks. Some bottles are problematic or have a deposit which is hard to stir. So a man's hand is needed to work those bottles. The riffling consists of making the deposit fall down the bottle neck so the bottle can be cleared.

Here on the cork, you can see the yeast, which as formed, following sparkle capture and maturation. The bottle has been riffled, all the deposit has gone down to the cork and the aim is to open the bottle while expelling the yeast.

There are great principles of balance, great principles for blending depending on the grapes origins, the types of wines, the vintage wines, but in fact each assemblage is adjusted each year so as to take into account the raw material we have at our disposal, as the latter varies each year. Moët & Chandon's Rosé Impérial is the pink version of their standard cuvée. Of the 40-50% pinot noir used for the blend, 10% of it is matured red wine, which creates its distinctive colour and taste.
[01:06] Robe & Perlage:
Rosé Impérial features a refined perlage, which dance gracefully to the surface.
[02:45] Nose & Bouquet:
Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial features a nose heavy on strawberries as well as cherry. Its sweet aromas also offer a mild straw note.
[03:40] Palate & Mouthfeel:
Rosé Impérial features a strong red wine trait with an opening of red berries and warm grapefruit followed by floral notes. Finally, it closes on a long drawn-out limestone finish with yeasty brioche.

Unlike most Champagnes, rosé can be paired with redder meats and larger, more copious meals. Because of their stronger, fruit-forward palates, they feature more character to pair with stronger dishes.
As for occasions, they don't need to be a specific event. Like the normal Impérial, it can be enjoyed at a party, between friends or even during an apéritif.
Finally, it also offers good value for money. Moët & Chandon is always a winner at events due to its brand recognition. Furthermore, its French price is around 30€, which is comparable to the price in the USA.

Since 1990, we have had no bad vintage, which is also a result of the climate change. We have fully ripe grapes every year, with excellent flavours. And this year again is a year with perfect weather: hot days and cold nights. And thus we are having internationally requested wines. Wine makers around the world have raised a glass to the ubiquitous grape in 2007.
From traditional growing harvesting virtually unchanged for centuries, to some of the newest ideas on how to make the perfect vintage.
STORYLINE:
In 2007 wine making in US state of California was boosted after becoming the first American region to obtain Geographic Indication status in Europe.
This means American and European wine producers cannot use the name Napa on labels sold in Europe, unless the wine is actually produced there.
As the local grape pickers worked to collect this year's harvest, Napa Valley cheered at the beginning of a new wine production cycle under the auspices of European Union protection.
The recognition came after a six year legal battle to obtain protection and prevent American and European wine producers from misusing the name Napa on labels sold in Europe.
The struggle for GI status started in 2001, after the Napa Vintner Association realised two wine brands, Napa Ridge in Spain and Clos du Napa in the UK, were being sold, but contained no Napa Valley wine.
To those involved in the winemaking process the GI status is seen as a acknowledgment of their hard work.

She says the quality of the Napa valley wine is high because makers take their work very seriously.

California exports 95 per cent of total US wine exports, according to MKF Research.
Wine is big business for California.
The European Union is the biggest importer of American wine, up to 56 per cent of American total export (by value) in 2006.
In 2005, the wine industry in California provided nearly 309,000 jobs, paying total wages of $10.1 billion US Dollars, according to MKF Research, a data-research company that works for the American Wine Institute.
