The center will host digital and interactive exhibitions that will tell the dynamic history of Naperville’s growth in the 20th and 21st century.

The Naperville Heritage Society, administrator of the nationally accredited outdoor history museum Naper Settlement located in Naperville, IL, began their Never Settle capital campaign in 2016. The campaign included capital projects that will provide resources to transform the museum into an immersive, experiential campus of discovery and lifelong learning. The proposed state-of-the-art welcome center, the Heritage Gateway, will host digital and interactive exhibitions that will tell the dynamic history of Naperville’s growth in the 20th and 21st century. The center’s digital exhibition space, Innovation Hall, will feature a digital wall that will give visitors and citizens a place to participate, share and curate their own story. The Heritage Gateway and Innovation Hall will establish a cultural connection to Naperville’s dynamic downtown and serves as a direct and indirect economic engine for the vibrancy of our city - advancing tourism, street-life and city beautification efforts.
Pending fundraising, the Naperville Heritage Society hopes to break ground in 2018 and open the new welcome center later in 2019, in celebration of the NHS’s 50th anniversary. Civil War Days at Naper Settlement
Relive the history of Civil War times at the annual Civil War Days, held at Naper Settlement, a historic museum and village in Naperville, Illinois, just 28 miles west of Chicago. If certain members of city council have their way, the empty space at the Alcatel-Lucent property could one day be filled with music.
The group recently voted six to three to earmark $12 million in potential state funding requests for 2015 to help the Chicago Symphony Orchestra buy land on the Alcatel-Lucent property for a summer concert venue.
“The point is that the state funds various things throughout the year even though they’re broke, they still fund things. The difference is that Naperville doesn’t receive any of that funding cause we never ask. So that money is being distributed and awarded to the state for different things, Naperville just hasn’t been able to take advantage of that,” said Steve Chirico, Councilman for the City of Naperville.
The request may seem a bit premature, because so far the CSO has simply discussed the possibility of creating a suburban music venue with no tangible plan.
But at his state of the county address, DuPage County Board Chairman, Dan Cronin suggested that Naperville was one of three locations being considered.
“Huge, it’s a game changer, tremendous financial impact, the economic impact would be amazing. I think the brand of having the CSO in Naperville would be great and it would work both ways because Naperville has a great brand also but to have the CSO would be a really amazing thing for the community,” said Chirico.
While the plans are still in their early stages, the possibility of having a music venue here in Naperville is not music to everyone’s ears.
“At a time when our states budget is under a big crunch, dollars are tight. Going to the taxpayers to ask them for money for something like this $120 million project is not sound policy to me. Keep in mind we’re under assault for increase funding to the state, for SB16, increase property taxes, income taxes,” said Grant Wehrli, Councilman for the City of Naperville.
Another worry? Oversaturation. The CSO already plays at the Morton Arboretum occasionally and Aurora’s River Edge Park and North Central’s Wentz Concert Hall already offer musical choices for the area.
But some don’t see that as a problem.
“One thing helps another and I think that having an institution of the level of the CSO here could do nothing but help the other institutions in the town like say North Central College and Naper Settlement, think about the cross marketing opportunities. North Central College has a really good music department, how cool would it be to do some sort of work together with the CSO same thing with Naper Settlement, I think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Joe McElroy, Councilman for the City of Naperville.
The state funding requests are scheduled to come back before the council for final approval at their December 2 meeting.

Naperville is a suburb of Chicago, located in DuPage and Will counties in the State of Illinois. Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006. It was rated 1st on the list of best cities for early retirement in 2013 by Kiplinger. In a 2010 study, Naperville was named the wealthiest city in the Midwest and eleventh in the nation with a population over 75,000. It was ranked among the nation's safest cities by USAToday. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 141,853, which was estimated to have increased to 144,864 by July 2013. It is the fifth-largest city in Illinois. Approximately 95,000 Napervillians live on the DuPage County side, while about 50,000 reside on the Will County side.
In July 1831, Joseph Naper arrived at the west bank of the DuPage River with his family and friends to found what would be known as Naper's Settlement.[8] Among those original settlers were Naper's wife Almeda Landon, his brother John with wife Betsy Goff, his sister Amy with husband John Murray, and his mother Sarah. Their arrival followed a nearly two-month voyage across three Great Lakes in the Naper brothers' schooner, the Telegraph. Also on that journey were several families who remained in the still raw settlement that would become Chicago, including that of Dexter Graves who is memorialized in Graceland Cemetery by the well-known Lorado Taft statue Eternal Silence (also known as the Dexter Graves Monument).
By 1832, over one hundred settlers had arrived at Naper's Settlement. Following the news of the Indian Creek massacre during the Black Hawk War, these settlers were temporarily displaced to Fort Dearborn for protection from an anticipated attack by the Sauk tribe. Fort Payne was built at Naper's Settlement, the settlers returned and the attack never materialized. The Pre-Emption House was constructed in 1834, as the Settlement became a stage-coach stop on the road from Chicago to Galena. Reconstructions of Fort Payne and the Pre-Emption House stand as part of Naper Settlement outdoor museum village, which was first established by the Naperville Heritage Society and the Naperville Park District in 1969 to preserve some of the community's oldest buildings.

Get To Know The New Naper Settlement CEO
Naperville lawyer, Macarena “Rena” Tamayo-Calabrese has been work for almost a month as President and CEO of Naper Settlement and the Naperville Heritage Society.
Before talking this position, the Naperville lawyer was the executive director of the National Association of Women Lawyers and led several departments at the American Bar Association in Chicago over 15 years, where she turned around failing programs.
“What they’re asking me to do is the big picture,” said Tamayo-Calabrese. “What they’re asking me to do is look at the big picture and that’s the kind of thing I’ve done in the past. It’s what I did for the American Bar Association. I don’t know what I can do here but I really want to come and find out. I think that’s part of the challenge and part of the fun.”
Her hiring came almost two year after former leader; Peggy Frank announced plans to retire.
During the year and a half search for a successor, the committee was looking for someone who could build on past leaders and use their own passion to take the Settlement to the next level.
“We were hoping someone would step up and knock our socks off a little bit,” said Steve Grosskopf, Vice Chair of the Settlement’s board. “We wanted someone that would inspire us to get to that next level. We had a great history of leadership and that’s what we were looking for. We didn’t want to loose anything, but we wanted to gain momentum.”
Tamayo-Calabrese hit the ground running last month and has many ideas on how to grow the organization, all which stem back to the vision that the Settlement tells stories with impact far beyond Naperville’s boarders.
“The Wheatland Plowing Association and all the things that happened with farming, that was part of the industrial revolution and that was big for our country, not just for Naperville,” said Tamayo-Calabrese. “But, most importantly it changes the way we feed America and that’s what happened in this tiny little town. There are so many big stories here.”
Stories she hopes to tell about the American dream through Naperville’s eyes.
“Whether it’s law, or whether it’s Naper Settlement, or museum work – my job is to tell a compelling story,” said Tamayo-Calabrese. “And to make that compelling story more known for the benefit of Naperville and for the benefit of our United States.”
Tamayo-Calabrese is just the second full-time leader in the museum’s 45-year history.

It’s all part of Trivia Night at World of Beer. Every Tuesday the crew invites “Go For It Entertainment” and locals to come out and test their knowledge while enjoying a drink.
“It brings a huge crowd and it’s always a blast. Our regulars over time have learned to absolutely love it, so you see a little friendly competition that keeps bringing them back,” said Rob Sanner, Product Manager at World of Beer.
Here’s how it works: come to the bar with a team and a team name, wager your points, and hope to get the most answers correct for a chance at the prizes.
“I try to make it kind of an experience, you’re hanging out at the bar, and I’m the guy you come to hang out with. That’s the experience I’m trying to go for. The questions generally run the gamut of trivial pursuit questions, movies, sports, history, science, that type of thing,” said Jeff Gimm, Trivia Host with “Go For It Entertainment.”
With over 17 teams competing in one night, it’s clear the trend is catching on.
“About nine years ago, nobody had trivia in the ‘burbs, if they did I didn’t hear of them. It’s just been growing, and growing, and growing and there’s a whole bunch of different bars and trivia nights,” said Gabriel Ortiz, Owner of “Go For It Entertainment.”
And anyone can play- from first timers…
“So we’ve talked about anything from like shark week questions, to general trivia, and random questions, trying to get the closest answer, so we’re doing our best. We’re not doing great, but we’re trying,” said Courtney Voise, a first-time player at World of Beer.
To seasoned veterans…
“We’ve been playing trivia for 12 years, I love trivia, love playing it, we’ve played in tournaments with Gabe before, won $2,000,” said Mike Tennyson, a trivia player.
While the top prize tops out around $30 dollars at World of Beer, most come out just for the experience.
“Drinking beers, having fun with your friends, and why not play trivia as well?” said Joe Marks, a trivia player.

Pearls of the Past: First Ribfest
Ribfest has become a fourth of July favorite not only for local residents but for those across the greater Chicagoland area.
Hundreds of thousands come for food, games, rides, and of course, fireworks and big-name musical acts that play each year.
The four-day festival dates back to 1987 with the chartering of the Exchange Club of Naperville. The organization dedicated itself to eliminating child abuse and domestic violence and Ribfest has helped to do so, raising more than $14-million for the cause so far.
Cress Creek 50th
Harold Larson remembers buying his current home, forty-five years ago, like it was yesterday.
It was time for his family to expand so they made the move from Lombard to a new golf course community he had joined in Naperville.
It wasn't perfect, it wouldn't of been what I would of designed myself, but it was good enough and it was better than what I had and I remember making the statement to myself 'it's good enough and we can live here for the rest of our lives,' said Larson.
Today, Larson still lives in that same home and is the only original club member still at Cress Creek, which is celebrating 50 years in July.
Back in 1963, Harold Moser, who is credited with building over a third of the homes in the city at that time, saw a market for a golf course built into a subdivision, because there wasn't anything else like it in the area.
In the 1960's, the early 1960s, Naperville had established itself as a suburb community of Chicago and so even though the people worked in Chicago, they worked and played out here, said Bryan Ogg, Curator of Research for Naper Settlement. So the golf course amenity would be a big plus to anyone wanting to live out here in Naperville.
Despite the distance from downtown Chicago, parents felt Naperville, and Cress Creek, were a good spot to raise their children in the all-inclusive neighborhood; children who have since grown up and continue to live there with their own kids.
There's a number of families here that have raised, we have seen two generations of families that have come up through Cress Creek, said Wally Hynes, General Manager at Cress Creek Country Club. Mom and dad may have come here in the 60s and 70s and those kids have since raised their kids here so it's a special place from the stand point of it being a family club.
After 25 years of ownership, Moser sold the club to the members in 1988 who have continued the family atmosphere ever since.
In honor of the milestone, the club hopes to get the entire Cress Creek family together again in August when they hold a golf day and social for all members past and present.
