The 6 by 9m two-story log slave pen was built in 1830. By 2003, it was the only known surviving rural slave jail, previously used to house slaves prior to their being shipped to auction.

One of the museum's key attractions is a walk-through exhibit documenting the rise and fall of the slave trade in the United States and North America.
Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Chronicles History Of Slavery
Roland Martin and Washington Watch visited Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. At the center, there are many artifacts and papers that chronicle the history of slavery and those individuals who fought feverishly against it, but also those who wanted slavery to stay in place.
Very soon, there'll be a lot more artifacts and papers, sculptures and exhibits detailing the rich history of African-Americans in the United States at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, set to open in the year 2015. Dr. Lonnie Bunch, the director of the museum, shows us some of the priceless artifacts he has already collected.

Xavier-Cincinnati Collaboration Benefits National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
Xavier University and University of Cincinnati collaborated to create a 90-second video that will be shown during the 2012 Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic at U.S. Bank Arena. It highlights the fact that this year's XU-UC men's basketball game benefits the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, located in downtown Cincinnati. XU and UC also co-produced a 30-second joint institutional ad to offer to ESPN to air during the game's broadcast.
The men's and women's basketball teams at both universities toured the Freedom Center in October and the universities sponsored a XU-UC Day at the center on Nov. 10, with free admission for students and discounted admission for those who wore spirit wear.
A check from both universities will also be presented to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center during a pre-game ceremony on Dec. 19, along with an autographed Skyline Chili Crosstown Classic basketball.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is a museum in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio based on the history of the Underground Railroad. Opened in 2004, the Center also pays tribute to all efforts to abolish human enslavement and secure freedom for all people.
It is one of a new group of museums of conscience in the United States, along with the Museum of Tolerance, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Civil Rights Museum. The Center offers insight into the struggle for freedom in the past, in the present, and for the future, as it attempts to challenge visitors to contemplate the meaning of freedom in their own lives. Its location recognizes the significant role of Cincinnati in the history of the Underground Railroad, as thousands of slaves escaped to freedom by crossing the Ohio River from the southern slave states. Many found refuge in the city, some staying there temporarily before heading north to gain freedom in Canada.

Richmond Heights High School Chorale Performs at the Freedom Center
On April 24, the Freedom Center was honored with an impromptu performance from the Richmond Heights Chorale of Richmond Heights High School. The chorale, comprised of 9-12 grade vocalists, we in the Queen City to take a tour of the Freedom Center and compete in the Music in the Parks Competition. Check out their amazing rendition of Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name, featuring soloist Zainab Kazeem under the direction of Anita Caswell.

Impacting the Future
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center opened in August 2004 on the banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The purpose is to tell the story of the struggle for freedom in the United States through exhibits and programs that focus on America's battle to rid itself of the ugly scourge of slavery and treat all its citizens with respect and dignity.
The Freedom Center's brief introductory video, Impacting the Future, explains the mission, exhibits, programs and related offerings. The video features Chief Executive Officer Don Murphy, Board Co-Chairman John Pepper, as well as testimonials from visitors, students, and volunteers.
