Paul Ryan Visiting Lawrence New Balance Factory To Talk Tax Reform
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan is heading to Massachusetts to talk taxes. WBZ-TV's Chris McKinnon reports.
USA: LAWSUIT AGAINST SHOE MAKER
English/Nat
A lawsuit between the U-S government and an American shoe maker could sharply limit the claims of Made-in-America used by some manufacturers.
The Federal Trade Commission says the New Balance Athletic Shoe is making false claims that it's product is made in the U-S-A.
Analysts watching the case say a ruling against New Balance would affect U-S manufacturers making everything from cars to computers - by sharply restricting use of the Made-in-America claim.
New Balance says - like many American companies who make such claims - all but a small percentage of their product is indeed U-S-made.
New Balance Athletic Shoe officials claim that - unlike the big sport shoe makers such as Nike and Reebok - they're building a truly American-made shoe in their factory near Boston, Massachusetts.
The Federal Trade Commission -or F-T-C - disagrees. The upper portion of New Balance shoes - about eighty percent - are made in America. The soles are imported from China. Both pieces are assembled at the U-S factory.
New Balance owner Jim Davis says he could employ overseas labour as other firms do to cut costs.
But the little factory - he says - is a commitment to the Made-in-America label that appears on the company's shoes.
SOUNDBITE:
Today the economy has changed dramatically. There is virtually nothing in this country that is totally 100 percent made in the U-S-A. Therefore the label would disappear from almost anything that is made here and it would have a dramatic impact on jobs in this country and our competitive advantage.
SUPER CAPTION:Jim Davis, Chairman-New Balance
F-T-C officials say New Balance - like other shoemakers it is watching - should be more accurate in their use of the Made-in-America slogan.
They say current New Balance advertisements of U-S-A-Made are misleading to consumers.
SOUNDBITE:
It seems to me that New Balance could easily advertise: Buy our shoes , we employ a thousand workers. But we also use some foreign parts. That is a truthful statement.
SUPER CAPTION: Phoebe Morse, Federal Trade Commission
Industry analysts believe the F-T-C is targeting New Balance and other small shoe makers to establish a precedent that would provide ammunition against bigger targets such as the U-S auto industry.
Consumers in general seem to appreciate the idea that Made-in-the-USA should mean just that.
SOUNDBITE:
I am not crazy about it because it's like they are misrepresenting the people, you know, and it bothers me but I know this happens in many cases.
SUPER CAPTION:Maryann Cestaro, Boston resident
New Balance officials are hoping to form a business coalition to lobby against the F-T-C plan. Until then, the label continues to say Made-in the U-S-A.

How the daredevil sport of parkour can help aging adults fall better!
It's all about moving through an environment quickly, jumping, crawling and climbing over obstacles. Parkour, also called freerunning, is not for the faint of heart. But, with a few modifications, it might be just the thing for older people at risk of falling.
The basics of parkour entail balance and knowing how to safely break a fall. A lot of what we are first working on is balance, said Austin Gall, who teaches a parkour class for beginners at Aerial Warehouse in Culver City, California. Just being able to balance along a rail without falling off or just simple things like footwork and jumping really low small distances.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the United States for adults over 65. What's more, a non-fatal fall can have a tremendous impact on quality of life.
Older adults who do fall sometimes experience an injury, said Kathy Cameron, director of the National Fall Prevention Resource Center. About 20% of those who fall have an injury like traumatic brain injury or a hip fracture or other broken bones.
But it's not just the bodily injuries that make falling so harmful. The simple fear of falling makes some older people eschew physical activity. And that, ironically, can lead to greater falling risks.
Physical activity is one of the prime ways that we can prevent falls, Cameron said. Exercise programs that improve balance and strengthen muscles are going to enhance our gait so that we can walk better and have better balance.
In addition to focusing on balance, Gall said, there is one particular move that can be particularly helpful to someone prone to falls.
I think the most important thing is being able to drop down into a roll to break your fall, he said.
A parkour roll is like a martial arts tumble. As the person hits the ground, they roll from one shoulder to the opposite hip. This sort of roll, correctly done, minimizes a fall's full force by distributing the impact across the body.

Trading Away Our Sovereignty
Some key labor leaders in Washington are saying the U.S. can't afford another trade agreement modeled on the North American Free Trade Agreement.
All things considered, this NAFTA accord has cursed the economy over the 20 years of its existence.
Jobs have been either its chief export or its main casualty.
U.S.-based corporations have shut down their American manufacturing in order to farm out the labor to cheap foreign labor markets.
This enormous savings on labor has become record levels of compensation and bonuses for CEOs leveraging the NAFTA system.
Meanwhile, U.S. import taxes known as tariffs are relaxed to near-oblivion.
The resulting flood of foreign-made goods enters the U.S. market with barely any revenue attached to offset the fact that the U.S. tax base has been reduced with factory closures.
Furthermore, the imported goods are sold at greatly-reduced retail prices. This often undercuts whatever U.S.-made products remain on store shelves.
At the same time, the laying off of manufacturing workers and related jobs reduces the purchasing power of U.S. consumers.
All of the foregoing is rarely explained in the vast majority of U.S. news reports, yet this background needs to be clarified
That's because the Obama administration now is pursuing a lofty international trade agenda. Two more NAFTAs, even larger than the original pact between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, are on tap.
The Washington newspaper Roll Call noted: The Obama administration has been courting labor unions—long the strongest supporters of the president but also perhaps the strongest skeptics of expanded free trade.
Simply put, the White House doesn't want to anger the working class and reduce voter turnout in the upcoming midterm elections.
Due to this touchy trade agenda, Democrats could lose control of the Senate.
At stake are two trade pacts: the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.
The Trans-Pacific pact, in terms of land area, would the world's largest-ever trade deal, involving about a dozen nations, from Australia and New Zealand to South America.
But what most U.S. media won't tell you is that the Transatlantic trade scheme is the same U.S.-European Union trade pact that we told you about last year.
NATO Sec. General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs that he wants to see such a trade deal enacted.
He also reported that the influential Washington think tank, the Brookings Institution, strongly supports a U.S.-EU trade agreement, as does the Business Roundtable.
But the latest twist is that a little-known outfit, the European Union Delegation to the U.S., maintains an office in Washington and is working overtime for the US-EU trade pact. The EU Delegation's office is at 2175 K Street.
The agenda of this eurocracy is to soften up American business and academic communities, as well as state and municipal officials, to accept globalist trade deals modeled on the NAFTA template.
Conferences are scheduled for:
· April 28th, hosted by the World Affairs Council of Las Vegas;
· May 1st, hosted by the Peoria, Illinois-Area World Affairs Council;
· May 1st, hosted by the World Affairs Council of Austin, Texas.
· And, among nine others, May 2nd, hosted by the Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council.
The central question for big labor is whether their professed support for the working man will eclipse their traditional love for the Democrat Party—now that President Obama wants two trade deals that could harm workers.
But the question for all Americans is whether they've learned enough from 20 years of NAFTA to demand that Congress says NO to both trade deals.
