New Belgium Brewery - Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville, North Carolina claims the title of Craft Brewing Capital of North America. There are over fifty craft-brewing companies in the picturesque community located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The New Belgium Brewing Company, one of the countries largest craft brewers, chose Asheville as the location for it's East Coast brewery which opened in early 2016. The company offers free guided tours with opportunities for beer tasting along the way. Located a mile from the heart of downtown Asheville and just across the French Broad River from the River Arts District and on River Greenway, the New Belgium Brewery has become a popular destination for tourists and locals.
New Belgium Brewing Company
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited Fort Collins, Colorado, and the town's claim to fame -- the New Belgium Brewing Company, home of Fat Tire Amber Ale and many other New Belgium beers. We got a free New Belgium Brewery Tour that included a visit to the tasting room (for the adults) and a trip down the employee slide (everyone tried that!). The employees were super friendly and shared some behind-the-scenes stories with us about the history of New Belgium beer and how the company's founder started making beer in a spare room and how it grew to become one of the largest microbrews in the United States. It was easy to see why outside magazine named the New Belgium Brewing Co the 13th best place to work in the US. While New Belgium is the most famous Fort Collins brewery, there are several other brewery companies in town, too, and it was fun and cheap visit for the whole family.

Beer City USA with kids - Asheville, NC
We decided to slow it down a little bit in Asheville and try to pretend we lived there. It was nice to relax and reset. Our days mostly revolved around food, because Asheville has an AMAZING restaurant scene. Every single meal we had was so, so good.
All the downtown buildings in Asheville are Art Deco style, which is my favorite architectural style. It's a beautiful little city.
I tried on mom jeans in multiple stores, settling on the ones at Target, where they have triple shopping carts. Perfect for us!
Asheville is hip and artsy, and it has more breweries per capita than any other city in America. That's why they call it beer city!
We tried to go to the pinball museum, but it was closed, so instead we wandered through the community gardens. We drove up the Blue Ridge Parkway and went on a hike at the tree identification trail. Then we went to the North Carolina Arboretum.
We went to the New Belgium Brewing Company, east coast headquarters. What a beautiful and relaxing place to spend an afternoon! Totally family friendly . . . and they were playing 90's hip hop, so I was in heaven.
Last but not least we discovered Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company, which the girls loved because it was full of old arcade games.
Asheville is a gem. I kinda want to stay!

New Belgium's Huge Shipment Arrives
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The final piece of a major shipment by new Belgium arrived at the Craven Street construction site Saturday morning. The brew vessel was delivered safely and it took quite a production to get it there.
Several Asheville Police officers, state police officers and NCDOT workers escorted the 20-foot long lauter tun through Asheville.
It looked otherworldly. It looked like a spacecraft coming, Bonnie Parker, a neighbor, said.
On November 10, the 5,300 gallon unit left Germany for a spot in New Belgium's brewing line. An employee explained the lauter tun will separate water from the grains during the brewing process.
For some neighbors, it's a huge sign of progress.
We're all excited about the brewery. We have some questions and concerns about the roads. But it's exciting, Parker said.
New Belgium employees say after the vessel is installed, roofs will be added to the structures.
We've been working a lot with the immediate neighborhood and they've been great at giving us feedback and letting us know how things are affecting them, Susanne Hackette, Community Relations for New Belgium, said.
Representatives from New Belgium have been holding small community gatherings during their construction process.
Hackette says a new shipment of fermentation vessels will arrive in March.
The company will also be hiring for about 50 positions throughout the year. For employment opportunities, click here.

Asheville Brewery Expanding, Creating Jobs
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- A popular Asheville brewery is creating jobs with a big expansion.
Wicked Weed broke ground on a new brewing facility in the Enka Commerce Park.
The existing building will be turned into a state of the art brew house that will brew 50,000 barrels a year, bringing about 85 new jobs. They say expanding will help them meet the growing demand.
We had such a great couple of years downtown at the pub. We really hit that point where we couldn't make any more beer and people still wanted our beer, Head Blender Walt Dickinson said.
The next logical step was well, we're going to need a bigger building that we can make beers like Freak of Nature, Double IPA, Tyranny, he says.
Wicked Weed bought the building from Buncombe County.
Commission chairman David Gantt says Wicked Weed is an investment in a big business that will trickle down to help many others.
They're buying a county building from us at fair market value so it's a win for the taxpayer, it's a win for Buncombe County, and it's a win for the Western North Carolina area, he says.
The county provided a $75,000 incentive to help with the expansion. Wicked Weed is making a $5 million initial investment with more expected as production ramps up. And then there's job creation. Dickinson says the facility will eventually employ about 85 people, 40 to be hired in the next few months.
That will be packaging, that will be warehouse. We're going to be hiring some more sales guys and delivery guys for the sales team, he says.
For one of the founding family members, this is all exciting.
This is just the next step. We can share our beer with more people, Denise Guthy said.
We're going to make the most beer per capita, or per city of anywhere in the United States, maybe anywhere in the world, Dickinson said.
Brewing equipment will be installed in June, with distribution of several beers expected by this Fall.
