Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York City, geographically smallest but most densely populated in the city. The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name as Manna-hata, twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the Hudson River). The word Manhattan has been translated as island of many hills from the Lenape language. New York County is one of seven counties in the United States to share the same name as the state in which they are located (the other six counties are Arkansas County, Hawaii County, Idaho County, Iowa County, Oklahoma County, and Utah County). The United States Postal Service prefers that mail addressed to Manhattan use New York, NY rather than Manhattan, NY. A prelude to organized colonial opposition to British rule, the Stamp Act Congress of representatives from across the Thirteen Colonies was held in New York City in 1765. The Congress resulted in the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, the first document by a representative body of multiple colonies to assert the concept popularly known as no taxation without representation. It was also the first time the colonies cooperated for a unified political aim, laying the foundation for the Continental Congresses that followed years later. The Sons of Liberty developed on Manhattan in the days following the Stamp Act protests. The organization participated in a long-term confrontation with British authorities over liberty poles that were alternately raised by the Sons of Liberty and cut down by British authorities. The skirmishes ended when the revolutionary New York Provincial Congress took power in 1775. Manhattan was at the heart of the New York Campaign, a series of major battles in the early American Revolutionary War. The Continental Army was forced to abandon Manhattan after the disastrous Battle of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776. The city became the British political and military center of operations in North America for the remainder of the war. Manhattan was greatly damaged by the Great Fire of New York during the British military rule that followed. British occupation lasted until November 25, 1783, when George Washington returned to Manhattan, as the last British forces left the city.

Nearly 35-thousand Indians now live in the New York area ... but for many life in the Big Apple makes it hard to preserve the old traditions.

But its here that the new arrivals to the Big Apple are striving to preserve the traditions of their ancient civilization.
At theatres like this, small groups of native American Indians regularly meet, to practise the ceremonial dances and rituals which have been handed down through the generations.
Thousands of Indians living in the New York area may not be as close to nature as their ancestors, but they are determined to keep their culture alive. New York is home to descendants from 60 different Indian nations, each one with a rich heritage to preserve.

And I think, you know, when you think of all the difficulties and hardships the Indian people have gone through in this country, music and dance has always been part of what they do, part of what's kept them going.

The Thunderbird American Indian dance troupe, organized over 30 years ago, holds monthly pow-wows. Researchers gathered unique regional dances from around the country so that they could be preserved and passed on.

In the 17th century Dutch ships and sailors of the W.I.C, anchored on Manhattan shores. They founded Fort Amsterdam, explored the land and traded with the Delaware Indians. They, were an ancient tribe in the land of the Lenape. The Dutch builded other settlements as Fort Oranje, Breuckelen and New Amsterdam. In 1664 the English took over. Breuckelen became Brooklyn and New Amsterdam - New York.

Close by, on a small island, is New York’s most famous landmark, the Statue Of Liberty. The head of Lady Liberty leads to the crown from which there are stunning views from several windows. Staten Island was first inhabited by the prehistoric Clovis Culture 14,000 years ago. By the time of European discovery, in 1520, the Native American Lenape people inhabited the lands. The Dutch settled here in 1609 and in 1729 the English setup Richmond Town here as the island's capitol. During the American Revolution, Staten Islanders were staunchly in favor of the crown and more than 1400 ships docked here as they prepared to attack. In 1898, Staten Island officially became part of New York City.
Staten Island's north shore is the most urban part of the island and includes historic neighborhoods, like St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton. Definitely check out the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, for amazing Victorian houses.
The east shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. It contains numerous parks and monuments to the veterans of the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. This part of the island contains some of the most beautiful park landscapes.
The island's south shore is home to the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlements from the 1960s. You can still find iconic sites throughout these neighborhoods and some of the best natural views New York City has to offer.
The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. It contains the legendary Boat Graveyard, where more than 100 wood and metal boats from three centuries have their final resting place. This is one of NYC's most industrious areas.
Staten Island is an incredible place. It's a rural safe-haven in America's largest city and a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's most definitely worth a visit!

The state of New York is a very complex place that can’t be summarized completely in just one video. But, we’ll give it the whole big picture overview version so you get an idea of exactly what this state is all about.
It’s larger than you think, and has awesome beaches, big cities, trashy rednecky towns and beautiful mountains and lakes. And it’s very diverse. In fact, it’s the 6th most diverse state when you consider the number of races and cultures that make New York State home.
New Yorkers like to think they’re the big fish in America.Since the internet has started, there have been lots of memes made to poke fun at just how self-centered New Yorkers truly are.
To completely understand New York, you need to understand the various regions of the state. As we do in all of our videos, we’ll break the state up into easy to understand and overly simplistic regions.
For New York, you could easily break the state up into three main areas. New York City itself, the New York metro area, and the rest of the state, called Upstate. As we’ll see later, the exact boundaries of Upstate New York are debatable.
New York City is broken up into five boroughs - Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn.
To get a complete understanding of how many people are crammed into New York City, we can look at a population density map. New York City has more than 8 and a half million people packed into a little area.
