North Carolina Adventure
While the Western United States is pretty awesome when it comes to outdoor sports, it’s way too spread out. Sure, there are beaches for surfing and kiteboarding, yes there are mountains for rock climbing, and of course there are rivers for rafting and kayaking, but they’re all hours and hours apart.
In North Carolina, on the other hand, you can drive from the mountains to the coast in a handful of hours, and cover all of the above and more within just one state. Want to rappel down a waterfall? Check. Want to surf and kiteboard at the Outer Banks? Want to go whitewater kayaking? Check. Mountain biking and rock climbing? Check, check. Don’t go out West for your adventure sports—you’ll have to spread everything out over a million trips. Do it all at once in North Carolina.

Community Information: Burnsville, NC
Whoever said small-town life was a small life never lived in Burnsville, NC. The town offers living situations and outdoor experiences that go above and beyond the norm, presenting you with many opportunities to Live the Life You Choose.
BHTV: Supporting Local Arts with HandMade In America -
Live the Life You Choose Video: Rural Living in WNC -
“Burnsville is kind of a cool place to be,” says Jamie McMahan, Yancey County Planner. “Our outdoor recreation has always been some of the best you’ll find on the east coast. The local art is some of the best in the nation. Downtown here—you can walk through the square, do a ‘360,’ look around—it’s Norman Rockwell. I mean, you can’t beat it.”
“You’re close to Asheville if you want the hustle and bustle, and if you don’t want the hustle and bustle, you’re just 35 minutes away,” says McMahan. “It’s the reason we have a lot of folks who live here, [who] both enjoy Asheville and Boone, but they want to be where life is a little slower. You can get to know your neighbors, and that’s what I think about when I think of Yancey County and Burnsville.”
“We draw a lot of people who come to Burnsville who plan other outdoor recreation,” says McMahon. “So many hiking trails. Of course, we're home to Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Rockies. Actually, 10 of the tallest peaks east of the Rockies are in Yancey County. So, a lot of outdoor recreation, a lot of people who are looking for fishing, hunting, hiking. We're ideally located sort of centrally to all those sorts of things. Burnsville is sort of the place where you can come hang out, have a coffee, do some shopping, if you’re not sweating on the trails somewhere, trying to pull a trout out of a stream nearby.”
“The retail merchants that you’ll find on Main Street are 100% independent retailers,” says McMahon. “All do a very thriving business, making it a sort of a very pedestrian friendly, very walkable, very energetic place downtown.”
“Yancey County and Burnsville are sort of going through a renaissance,” says McMahon. “The arts community here is very thriving. We're home to more artists per capita than any other place in the nation. Everything from fine arts to arts and crafts, blown glass, pottery. The Parkway Playhouse is just off of downtown, which is the longest running community theatre in North Carolina.”
“But most recently, we’ve actually had sort of a tech surge,” says McMahon. “Yancey County is also the only county in North Carolina to have 100% connectivity by fiber to the home. So no matter wherever you live in our rocky terrain here in Yancey County, because we’re pretty mountainous, you can be served with up to a full gig of service by fiber connection.”
“It’s a very wide and diverse group of folks who come here,” says McMahon. “We have a lot of native-born folks who grew up here and realize it to be the best place in the world. We have a lot of people who come here as soon as they can, as I like to put it—so, as soon as they discover Burnsville and Yancey County. So, a lot of folks who come from, really, all over the country have settled here and make it, really, a vibrant community.”
“To watch Burnsville change, as it’s changed and evolved and grown as a small town—I think it’s the ideal small town,” says McMahon. “And if you like that kind of small town life, you want to take it a little slower, a little easier—you couldn’t find a better place to be.”

Winston - Salem, NC (DJI Mavic Pro Footage)
Winston - Salem, North Carolina ( Twin City) is the fifth largest city in North Carolina and the 89th largest in the United States.
This county seat City for Forsyth County was founded when?
The City of Salem was founded in 1766 - but started back in 1753 when Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg ( Moravian Church) selected to settle on a site in the Three Forks of Muddy Creek. The area at that time was called die Wachau' which in latin terms means Wachovia. In 1766 , the town chose the name of Salem for their settlement which means Peace.
In 1849 , the Settlement of Salem sold land north of Salem to the new formed county Foryth so that it could be used as the county seat. They called this land the county town till 1851 when it was renamed Winston. The town was named after the Revolutionary War hero - Joseph Winston.
In 1880 , the US Post Office started referring to the two towns as Winston-Salem. Then in 1899 , the Post Office established the Winston-Salem post office in Winston. Then in 1913 - after a referendum the two towns were incorporated as Winston Salem.
Many nicknames have been given to the City like these.....
Twin City - for the joining of the two cities
City of Arts & Innovation - the dedication to the fine arts.
Camel City - referring to the cigarette history
Dash - which refers to the dash in the City's name.
Winston-Salem has a deep and interesting history. Too much that it can't be describe here - whether it's the history in Tobacco or Moravian Cookies? Or the forming of the bank once named Wachovia which was bought by Wells Fargo - you should read up on the history.
Winston - Salem is a beautiful city close to two popular state parks - Pilot Mountain & Hanging Rock which can be enjoyed during your time in the area. Or go by and visit the Old Salem site founded in 1766. Or enjoy many nice attractions around the University of Wake Forest.
Whatever you decide to do - you should enjoy this dual city...

Bluegrass and Dancing at the Feed & Seed Music Hall, Fletcher, NC.
Feed & Seed is located in the old The Fletcher Supply Company that was built in 1919 by the Youngblood family and served as the “heart of downtown Fletcher” for many years. Over the years, the building has been a butcher shop, pottery and ceramics studio, TV repair shop, bingo hall and a feed store. The hardwood floors, 12-foot ceilings and hammered tin tiles on the ceiling have stood the test of time and create a unique ambiance for experiencing our regional musical heritage. The building has been recently updated and restored with the addition of a stage and nice sound system.

North Carolina Music Hall of Fame Awards
North Carolina Music Hall of Fame Awards is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which first aired in syndication on November 15, 2014
In this segment Carl takes us to the historic GemTheatre in Kannapolis for a night of music, glamour, and fun as some of the finest native North Carolinian musicians are inducted into the 2014 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame.
This year's inductees include native North Carolinians The Embers, Fantasia, Clay Aiken, Lulu Belle and Scotty, Little Eva, Talmadge Tab Smith, Jimmy Capps, and Link Wray.
Before the show begins, Carl interviews many of the guests, asking them who they are here to see. He also speaks with Kannoplis native Elizabeth Safrit, Miss United States 2014, and 1999 North Carolina Music Hall of Fame inductee Ken Knox, who also performs in the show.
Next we get a back stage pass with Carl as he interviews Bill Kopald, the Producer and Master of Ceremonies of the Induction Ceremony. Bill gives us an intriguing peek at some of the history of the Hall of Fame and shares some interesting tidbits.
Carl also speaks with 2009 inductee Eddie Ray, now the Executive Director of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, who emphasizes the tremendous amount of musical talent that North Carolina has produced. Bill has shared with us the little known fact that Eddie is the person responsible for bringing Pink Floyd to the United States.
And then it's off to the show! As each inductee is introduced, a video montage is played featuring highlights of their career. The audience was treated to performance by several of current and past inductees as well as Link Wray's grandson Chris Wray.
Carl sums up the evening best as this episode closes: Wow! Do we have great talent here in the Carolinas!
Carl White’s Life In The Carolinas is an Emmy nominated TV and award winning show in its sixth season. It airs throughout the Carolinas. Check guide listings for additional air times. For more on the show visit lifeinthecarolinas.com
