Ocean City is on New Jersey's coastal Jersey Shore. The city has a string of beaches and a boardwalk with shops, eateries and amusement parks. Gillian’s Wonderland Pier offers classic rides like the Giant Wheel. Playland’s Castaway Cove features several roller coasters and themed mini-golf. To the south, Corson’s Inlet State Park, with trails and a boat launch, attracts shorebirds to its dunes and wetlands.
Ocean City originated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 3, 1884, from portions of Upper Township, based on results from a referendum on April 30, 1884, and was reincorporated as a borough on March 31, 1890. Ocean City was incorporated as a city, its current government form, on March 25, 1897. The city is named for its location on the Atlantic Ocean.
Known as a family-oriented seaside resort, Ocean City has prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages within its limits since its founding in 1879, offering miles of guarded beaches, a boardwalk that stretches for 2.5 miles (4.0 km), and a downtown shopping and dining district. The Travel Channel rated Ocean City as the Best Family Beach of 2005. It was ranked the third-best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium. In the 2009 Top 10 Beaches Contest, Ocean City ranked first.

OBX Daydream | Chicamacomico Apparatus Drill
Predecessor to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station has a long-standing Beach Apparatus Drill program. The drill was performed originally by surfmen of the US Life Saving Service and continued after the merger that formed the USCG in 1915. The last actual rescue performed with the Beach Apparatus was in 1954. Enjoy this moment of history coming to life and start planning your visit today at: This Breeches Buoy Drill happens on Thursday at 2:00pm during the summer season.
An Introduction to the US Lifesaving Service
Cape Cod was once home to 13 lifesaving stations, each manned by the brave predecessors of the modern Coast Guard, then called surfmen. Cape Cod National Seashore has the privilege of maintaining the last intact station of the original 13. Originally in Chatham, Old Harbor was moved to Race Point Beach in Provincetown in the winter of 1977-78, to serve as a museum. It has been restored and refurnished to depict the 1900 era. Every Thursday at 6pm in July and August, rangers put on a living history reenactment of the Beach Apparatus Drill, a complicated rescue technique that was practiced every week by the surfmen, but would only be used in the worst of storms.

Cape Disappointment - WWII Bunker
Cape Disappointment - WWII Bunker
Today I went for a hike and explored a WWII Army bunker at Cape Disappointment Washington. There was a smaller one or two person building or guard shack (possibly), a bunker with several
rooms, and an abandoned water tower. According to historical records, the bunker was a lookout, which featured a powerful search light and radar.

Saving Wood Island
After nearly 60 years of neglect the Wood Island Life Saving Station is headed to restoration rather than demolition. The Kittery Town Council voted on October 16, 2013 to approve a Repair Agreement to allow the Wood Island Life Saving Station Association (WILSSA) to restore the exterior of the Wood Island Station. As part of that agreement, on January 22, the Town submitted a $200,000 grant application to EPA for federal funding to clean up the hazardous materials found throughout the structure. On May 28 EPA approved this grant request. On July 18, 2014 building technicians from Preservation Timber Framing in Berwick, Maine secure the frame and temporarily fix the roof.
