The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot (192 m) monument in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a weighted catenary arch,[5] it is the world's tallest arch,[4] the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere,[6] and Missouri's tallest accessible building. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the United States,[5] and officially dedicated to the American people, the Arch, commonly referred to as The Gateway to the West is the centerpiece of Gateway Arch National Park and has become an internationally recognized symbol of St. Louis, as well as a popular tourist destination.
The Arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen in 1947; construction began on February 12, 1963 and was completed on October 28, 1965[7][8] at an overall cost of $13 million[9] (equivalent to $80.6 million in 2018[2]). The monument opened to the public on June 10, 1967.[10] It is located at the site of St. Louis's founding on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

Gateway Arch Experience in St. Louis, Missouri
Gateway Arch National Park, formerly known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial until 2018, is an American national park located in St. Louis, Missouri, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Gateway Arch and its immediate surroundings were initially designated as a national memorial by executive order on December 21, 1935, and redesignated as a national park in 2018. The park is maintained by the National Park Service (NPS).
The memorial was established to commemorate:
the Louisiana Purchase, and the subsequent westward movement of American explorers and pioneers;
the first civil government west of the Mississippi River; and
the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case.
The national park consists of the Gateway Arch, a steel catenary arch that has become the definitive icon of St. Louis; a 91-acre (36.8 ha) park along the Mississippi River on the site of the earliest buildings of the city; the Old Courthouse, a former state and federal courthouse where the Dred Scott case originated; and the 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) museum at the Gateway Arch.
The Gateway Arch:
The Gateway Arch, known as the Gateway to the West, is the tallest structure in Missouri. It was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947 and built between 1963 and October 1965. It stands 630 feet (192 m) tall and 630 feet (192 m) wide at its base. The legs are 54 feet (16.5 m) wide at the base, narrowing to 17 feet (5.2 m) at the arch. There is a unique tram system to carry passengers to the observation room at the top of the arch.
Old Courthouse:
The Old Courthouse is built on land originally deeded by St. Louis founder Auguste Chouteau. It marks the location over which the arch reaches. Its dome was built during the American Civil War and is similar to the dome on the United States Capitol which was also built during the Civil War. It was the site of the local trials in the Dred Scott case.
The courthouse is the only portion of the memorial west of Interstate 44. To the west of the Old Courthouse is a Greenway between Market and Chestnut Streets which is only interrupted by the Civil Courts Building which features a pyramid model of the Mausoleum of Mausolus (which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) on its roof. When the Civil Courts building was built in the 1920s, the Chouteau family sued to regain the property belonging to the Old Courthouse because it had been deeded in perpetuity to be a courthouse.
Museum at the Gateway Arch:
Underneath the arch is a visitor center, entered from a circular entryway facing the Old Courthouse. Within the center, a project to rebuild the Museum at the Gateway Arch was completed in July 2018. The new museum features exhibits on a variety of topics including westward expansion and the construction of the arch, all told through a St. Louis lens. Tucker Theater, finished in 1968 and renovated 30 years later, has about 285 seats and shows a documentary (Monument to the Dream) on the arch's construction. A second theater was added in 1993 but removed in 2018 as part of the CityArchRiver renovation project. Also located in the visitor center are a gift shop and cafe.

Shaped by the inspired design of Finnish-America architect Eero Saarinen, the Gateway Arch celebrates the westward expansion of the United States and the pioneers who made it possible. Since its completion in 1965, the monument has taken millions of visitors on the trip to the top to enjoy stunning views stretching up to 30 miles to the east and west.

Landmark in Every Sense of the Word
Walk the halls where ordinary Americans made civil rights history. Built in 1839, the Old Courthouse is a prime example of mid-19th century federal architecture. But it is two landmark cases that secure its place in history.
Beginning in 1847, the enslaved Dred Scott twice sued for his and his wife Harriet’s freedom. But, the U.S. Supreme Court decided against them, ruling that African-Americans were not citizens and had no right to sue. In 1873, St. Louis suffragette Virginia Minor and her husband filed a civil suit arguing for women’s right to vote. Although their suit was denied, they brought great attention to the fight for voting rights for all U.S. citizens.

Gateway Arch National Park is located in St Louis, Missouri. The massive arch stands out in the city skyline and was a feat on engineering. Originally deemed the gateway to the west. The park features an onsite museum, wonderful movie about how the arch was built and a tram ride to the top of the arch. All of which are not to be missed! You won't believe the crazy tram cars that travel up to the top!
In addition to the arch, nearby you can take a boat ride down the Mississippi River, explore the parks and gardens and tour the old courthouse - the place where the Dred Scott decision was made. Come along with us as we adventure in St Louis!

Medieval America 27: Six States from St Louis to Fargo
In this episode of my trip around America I continue my journey north in the center of the country. I traveled into six new states, and cover 1250 miles in the course of eight days traveling ever north from St. Louis Missouri all the way to Fargo North Dakota.
We stop at several castles and a major museum.
With this video and the previous video (episode 26) I went from the New Orleans at the south of America all the way north to Fargo North Dakota bifurcating the country. There was a big swing in temperate and a constant uphill climb. I also noticed now in this video that the terrain is changing there is a lot more open space with enormous open fields and gentle rolling hills, with much fewer trees. It is clear we are heading toward the prairie states.

I went into Indiana and spent one night in Indianapolis. After that I moved on to Chicago Illinois

Madison Wisconsin: The Morgridge Center Also known as the Red Gym, It was built in 1894 and was used as an armory and gymasium for the University of Wisconsin. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
Then West on Route 18 across part of Iowa which is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. all the way to Mason city Iowa. A little over 200 miles.
Then North into Minnesota for Minneapolis, St Paul and St cloud for four castles:
The Landmark Center in St Paul- Completed in 1902 it is also in the Romanesque Revival style but notice how different it looks because of the different stone compared to the Red Gym, (This building is pink granite ashlar) It was initially used as the State post office, courthouse and customs house.
The American Swedish Institute (The Swan Turnblad Mansion) It is built in Chateauesque style which is a revival style architecture based onFrench Renaissance Architecture. IT was completed in 1910 and is made of Bedford Limestone. It is also known as the swedish castle.
The Stanford Newel House in St. Paul It The core of the building was built in 1864 by a man named Lasher during the Civil War using locally quarried limestone. It was purchased in 1886 by Stanford Newel and upgraded with the tower and battlements added.
The UMinn NROTC Building - in Minneapolis, it is the University of Minnesota Armory. It was constructed in 1896. It originally served as the University Armory and Gymnasium. Over the years it has served various purposes and now is the home of the University Naval ROTC and gymnasium.
Fergus Falls Minnesota for the Kirkbride Building also known as the Fergus Falls State Mental Health Hospital . It is purported to be haunted. Construction was completed in 1907.
Ending in Fargo North Dakota and Unicorn Park.
Next up I will be traveling west and covering some of the Prairie States.
Notgrass History: Gateway Arch - St. Louis, MO
Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch commemorates the vision of Thomas Jefferson and the role of St. Louis in the westward expansion of the United States.
The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, part of the National Park Service, includes both the Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse, which played a role in the court case of Dred and Harriet Scott, slaves who sought freedom in the 1840s and 1850s.
