BOSTON'S OLDEST CHURCH ⛪ (OLD NORTH CHURCH) & the American Revolution of 1776
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit one of America's oldest and most historic churches:Old North Church in the North End of Boston, is the location from which the famous One if by land, and two if by sea signal is said to have been sent. This phrase is related to Paul Revere's midnight ride, of April 18, 1775, which preceded the Battles of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution.
Boston is Massachusetts’ capital and largest city. Founded in 1630, it’s one of the oldest cities in the U.S. The key role it played in the American Revolution is highlighted on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the nation’s founding. One stop, former meeting house Faneuil Hall, is a popular marketplace.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. The historic Old North Church is a place of historical importance relating to the start of the American Revolution in 1775. In order to warn of the British invasion, Robert Newman and Paul Revere agreed to hang one or two lanterns... One if by land, two if by sea. That famous quote forever lives in our nation's history, and making The Old North Church a place of historical importance.
Boston's Heritage Trail
On our second day in Boston, the intellectual capital of the US, we took the Freedom Trail, and visited all the heritage sites that make this historic city such a delightful destination.
Today's Freedom Trail bears few traces of Puritan Boston, only its old burial grounds, some 18th-early 19th century structures, and the labyrinth of narrow, crooked streets remain. On the way to a Catholic Church at Downtown Crossing to hear Sunday Mass, after parking our car near Quincy market, and without realizing it, we had already begun our heritage trail. Quincy Market of 1825 originally formed part of Faneuil Hall, and named after former Mayor Josiah Quincy, who initiated its development. Today, the building houses shops and restaurants, and serves as the meeting point of many tourists.
From Faneuil Hall, we traced our steps towards the Boston Common, passing by the new City Hall, the King's Chapel (founded in 1686 as the first Anglican Church in New England) , and the Old Granary burying ground, where we visited the pyramid honoring Benjamin Franklin's parents, and the burial sites of Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, and the unmarked grave of John Hancock nearby. After mass, we retraced our steps back to the Boston Common, took photos of the Park Street Church (which was built in 1809 on the Old Granary Building), and walked the trail mindful of the Freedom Trail marker stones along the path. We reached the old City Hall, situated at School Street, site of the first public school in America built in 1634. Old City Hall was built in the Old French Empire style, and this is where Benjamin Franklin and J. Quincy stand erect. A few meters away is the Old Corner Bookstore, one of the oldest buildings in Boston, built in 1718, and became literary center in the city, frequented by Charles Dickens and the like. Old South Meeting House was built in 1729 as a Puritan house of worship and was the largest structure in colonial Boston. The Boston Tea Party of 1773 started in the Old South Meeting House, where Samuel Adams completed his speech, saying: This meeting can do nothing more to save this country. And then, the more than 5,000 people gathered there rushed to the harbor, throwing overboard 3 shiploads of British tea into the water.
The Old State House was Boston's oldest public building erected in 1713. On July 18, 1776, it became part of the nation's history when the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed from its balcony. The Boston Massacre took place right in front of the Old State House.
By the time we got back to Faneuil Hall, it was time for lunch. We walked towards North end to look for the Union Oyster House, the oldest and still existing restaurant in the US, but at the last minute, opted to eat at Quincy market for a variety of eats. More on our second leg of the Freedom Trail in Part 2 of this series.

The Old North Church Lights Up History - The Freedom Trail, Boston
The Old North Church plays a dramatic role in the American Revolution. It is well known for One if by land, and two if by sea signal sent on April 18, 1775 and Paul revere’s Midnight Ride before the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
The Freedom Trail in Boston leads to 16 historical sites, including Boston Common, Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground, King’s Chapel and Burying Ground, Ben Franklin Statue and First Public School Site, Old Corner Bookstore, Old South Meeting House, Old State House, Boston Massacre Site, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House, Old North Church, Copp’s Hill Burying Ground, USS Constitution and Charlestown Navy Yard, and Bunker Hill Monument.
Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Robert Treat Paine, are buried here in the Granary Burying Ground.
Thousands of colonists gathered at Old South Meeting House to challenge British rule, most famously to protest the Boston Massacre and the tea tax.
The Old State House was the political center in colonial Boston. On July 18, 1776, citizens gathered in the street to hear the Declaration of Independence.
In the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770, the British killed five colonists.
The old north church, known as Christ Church in the City of Boston, is Boston's oldest Church building, and is still an active Episcopal congregation today. Its 191 feet tall steeple is the tallest in Boston.
USS Constitution, called Old Ironsides, is the oldest commissioned warship.
Paul Revere was an American silversmith, engraver, early industrialist, and a patriot in the American Revolution. He is best known for his midnight ride to alert the Colonial militia to the approach of British forces before the battles of Lexington and Concord. “Listen, my children, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,”
On the evening of April 18, 1775, the church sexton, Robert Newman, and Vestryman Capt. John Pulling, Jr. climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. They lit the two lanterns and held them out the window facing towards Charlestown for just sixty seconds. It doesn’t sound like a long time but it was all the time that was needed. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution.
When Paul Revere arrived in Charlestown nearly an hour later, he was told that the lights had been seen and men were already riding. He borrowed a horse and began his own ride from there. The message would spread as far north as New Hampshire and as far south as Connecticut. The next morning on April 19, 1775, when the 700 British troops arrived in Lexington, they did not find the sleeping village they had hoped, instead they found an armed and waiting militia. The shots that were fired that morning became the first of the American Revolutionary War.
Check the pews owned by colonial congregants. The original artifacts include Two brass chandeliers from 1724, Original organ from 1759. Four Belgium hand-curved, wooden angels are perched around the organ.
The alleged surviving Revere Lantern is reserved at the Concord Museum. In the bell ringing chamber, learn the workings of the oldest set of change-ringing bells in North America. The Crypt consists of 37 tombs and were used in colonial Boston.
The North Church Boston
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited the sight of the start of the American Revolution, the Old North Church Boston. One of the highlights of Boston's Freedom Trail is the Old North Church, where Paul Revere got his signal that the British were approaching Boston during the Revolutionary War. High atop the Episcopal Church, also known as Christ Church, sits the highest steeple in Boston, and it is Boston's oldest church building. Sexton Robert Newman sent his famous signal, One if by land, two if by sea, from the 191-foot steeple to Revere. Poet Henry Longfellow made Revere famous in his poem, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, and Theodore Roosevelt once visited Northchurch. Any Boston tour includes a visit to the church. If you are looking for what to do in Boston, hop on the Freedom Trail and visit the North Church. The Freedom Trail and the Old North Church were among the favorite Boston attractions for a Cheap Family.
