The Sunshine Skyway opened in 1987. 7 years after a freightline knock out 1000 feet of the old Skyway bridge on a foggy morning of May 9th, 1980 sadly killing 35 people who were unaware of the missing segment of bridge. Construction began in 1982 at a cost of 244 million. It took 5 years to build, very rapid construction considering the size of the bridge. It is over 4 miles long. The cables descending from 2 towers are set in the middle of the bridge so that mortorists would always have an unimpeded view of the bay. This bridge is 190 feet above the water allowing ships to safely pass underneath. The bridge connects St Petersburg (Pinellas County) with Bradenton (Manatee County), however the middle of the waterway is owned by Hillsborough County.
The Gandy Bridge almost 3 miles long Connects South Tampa with St Petersburg. The original 2 spans of the Gandy Bridge was built in 1924. One Span demolish in 1975 with the 2nd Span, you used to be open for pedestrians and bicyclist until 2016 when it was demolished as well. The 3 span is the lower level span you see built in 1975 and the 4th span being the higher level span opened in 1997,
The Howard Franklin is I-275, was named after the businessman who proposed the building of it. It opend in 1960 with 2 lanes in each direction, one span and no median barrier, With no emergency Shoulders it was proved to be dangers and was nicked named ‘Howard Frankenstein”. With the Skyway disaster in 1980 more traffic burden was placed on this bridge and it was clear it needed to be expanded. The southbound span opened in 1990. Today the Howard Franklin speedway has 4 lines in both directions.
The Courney Campbel Causeway, highway 60 is not only a bridge from Tampa to Clearwater, but it provides a popular recreation area, beaches as wells a bike path, the Corney Campbell Trail which is 10.5 miles long the only path which allows you to completely cross Tampa Bay on bike or on feet. The Causeway open in 1934 originally called the Davis Causeway, named after Ben T Davis the owner of the local dredging company who help begin the process of building the cause way. The beach on the Causeway is now named after him, but the causeway itself renamed in 1948 after a US Representative, Clearwater Beach resident who spearheaded efforts to make needed repaires and a beautification project.

dolphins playing with us while boating
We were in Ostego Bay close to Fort Myers Beach just after the no wake zone when a dolphin came to our boat and played with us. It seemed to have even more fun than the screaming girls on our boat.
South Tampa ???? One of Tampa's Most Popular Areas | MELANIE ❤️ TAMPA BAY
One of the most popular Tampa Bay areas is definitely South Tampa, so let's take a closer look to see if it's for you!
Generally when people are talking about South Tampa, they're referring to the peninsula that juts down into Tampa Bay with the northern boundary of South Tampa being State Road 60 (Kennedy Boulevard) and the southern boundary being MacDill Air Force Base.
So why do so many want to live in South Tampa?
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
South Tampa is close to two large commercial areas - the Westshore District near Tampa International Airport, and Downtown Tampa. That makes for a convenient commute. However, you would have pretty quick access to highways bringing you to other Tampa Bay areas including I-275 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, originally known as the Southern Crosstown Expressway.
It's also close to fun places around Downtown Tampa like Amalie Arena, Curtis Hixon Park, The Florida Aquarium, Glazer Children's Museum, Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and Sparkman Wharf.
EATING, DRINKING & SHOPPING
Because South Tampa has been a popular areas for a long time, many local and chain businesses and restaurants have set up shop here. You don't have to go far to find an amazing restaurant, fun boutique, or grocery store.
Great spots for shopping include WestShore Plaza, International Plaza, and Hyde Park Village.
Howard Avenue is known for the famous Bern's Steak House and quite a few bars appealing to the younger crowd.
SCHOOL DISTRICT
If you've been looking online at listings, you probably see the phrase in the Plant High School District. Plant High School is consistently one of the highest rated in the area. Make sure you check the actual school zone for the house you're interested in purchasing.
The other high school in South Tampa is in the southern portion of the peninsula - Robinson High School.
*NOTE: School zones subject to change
NOT COOKIE CUTTER
Because the area has been built over the last century, every house looks different and there are plenty of examples where century-old bungalows sit next to brand new contemporary construction.
If you value privacy, South Tampa can be a hard place to find it with many smaller lot sizes. Unless you are backing up to the water, golf course, or a street changes are good that you'll have a neighbor backing up to your property.
NEIGHBORHOODS & HOUSING OPTIONS
Neighborhood boundaries in South Tampa can be hard to figure out, as many aren't labeled well other than a small sign.
You can see beautiful, historic bungalows in Hyde Park Village, lots of new construction in Swann Estates from builders developing existing lots where older homes used to stand. There are townhouses close to Howard Avenue, and you'll find some walkable neighborhoods in South Tampa.
If you want your kids to be able to walk to Plant High School, look at Palma Ceia, West Palma Ceia, or Virginia Park.
Like Downtown St. Pete, South Tampa has some of the highest price real estate in the area since demand is so high. If you want a waterfront property in South Tampa, be prepared to spend well over $1 million.
Other popular neighborhoods include Beach Park, Bayshore Beautiful, Ballast Point, Interbay, Westshore Yacht Club, Culbreath Isles, Sunset Park, Golfview, nearby Davis Islands and Harbour Island.

Tampa Bay, Florida - Norwegian Star sailing under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge HD (2016)
The Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, commonly known as the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, is a bridge spanning Tampa Bay, Florida, with a cable-stayed main span, and a total length of 21,877 feet (4.1 miles or approximately 6.67 km). It is part of I-275 (SR 93) and US 19 (SR 55), connecting St. Petersburg in Pinellas County and Terra Ceia in Manatee County, Florida, passing through Hillsborough County waters. Construction of the current bridge began in 1982, and the completed bridge was dedicated on February 7, 1987. The new bridge cost $244 million to build, and was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987. It replaced an older bridge constructed in 1954, which was partly destroyed in a collision in 1980.
It is constructed of steel and concrete. Steel cables clad in 84 9-inch (229 mm) steel tubes (42 per pylon) along the center line of the bridge support the main span. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group (who also designed the popular Seven Mile Bridge), and built by the American Bridge Company.
In 2005, an act of the Florida Legislature officially named the current bridge the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, after the Governor of Florida and then U.S. Senator who presided over its design and most of its construction. According to sources, he was inspired to suggest the current design by a visit to France, where he saw a similar cable-stayed bridge, the Brotonne Bridge. The original bridge was dedicated to state engineer William E. Dean, as noted on a plaque displayed at the rest area at the south end of the bridge.
The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway No. 3 in its special on the Top 10 Bridges in the World. The bridge is considered the flag bridge of Florida.
Because of its height above the emerald-green Gulf waters, length of continuous travel, location in a warm-weather state, and modern architectural design, it is a popular spot for filming automobile commercials.
A major problem with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is corrosion of the steel in the precast concrete segmental columns on the high level approaches. Because the segments are hollow, workers were able to enter the bridge superstructure in 2003 and 2004 to reinforce the corroded sections of the bridge, ensuring its future safety. Another problem arose around 2005–2006 when several news bureaus reported paint discolorations on the bridge's cables. These paint splotches and patches were a result of touch-ups that were performed over the years but began to show through over recent years. In 2008, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began an overhaul including repainting the cables in their entirety (instead of touching up) and rehabilitating the lighting system at the summit of the bridge.
A 2014 FDOT study noted that the Skyway's low bridge clearance prevented larger vessels from using the Port Tampa Bay terminals, but made no recommendation about options as the air draft of most new cruise ships exceeds the bridge's height limit at 180 feet.

31. Dirt Cheap Fifty-Two Foot DREAM Yacht! Should We Buy? - Sailing Vessel Somnium
We've always dreamed of owning a large sailboat and calling it our home... Is this going to be that boat? Is there too much work to be done? You tell us... because we still haven't decided.
This boat we check out is an Irwin 52' - a very luxurious sailing yacht in it's heyday, and some still are kept in amazing condition. One of these boats in good shape typically sells for $200,000 to $300,000, so the question is... is it worth buying this gutted boat for $25,000?

My Hurricane Cruise Story
This is the story of what happened when we flew to Florida for a 3-day cruise on Royal Caribbean's Navigator Of The Seas at the exact same time that Hurricane Dorian was moving in to the area. We had expected to sail to the Bahamas, but since that's exactly where the hurricane was headed, the cruise ship headed in the complete opposite direction to stay out of danger. The surprise was that this required our scheduled 3-day cruise to be extended to a 5-day cruise, but all at the original 3-day price. They even gave us a $300 credit towards a future cruise for the disruption to our plans.
In this video, I give you a full review of the ship following her recent $115,000,000 makeover which added numerous new features to this 17 year old cruise liner and brought the most important parts of the ship up to the standards of a brand-new cruise ship. She now has one of the best pool decks of any ocean liner, as well as some fantastic new waterslides.
Because this video was not sponsored by Royal Caribbean and I paid my way at my own expense, I was free to give an honest review of the ship including both the good and the bad things I noticed about the ship.
If you're interested in interacting with me on social media, head over to my Facebook group at

If you're interested in booking a cruise, you might find it beneficial to use the free services of a travel agent... who can make sure that all the details get handled correctly, and who can help prevent you from making common cruising mistakes like booking a cabin in a noisy location of the ship. You're welcome to use my travel agent, Caitlin Gallagher, who I've been very satisfied with. Send her an email at caitlin@ambrentravel.com and tell her what cruise you're interested in her help with.
32. FREE SAILBOAT - Too Good To Be True? - DIY Sailing
They say There's nothing more expensive than a free boat, but craigslist has some unicorns every now and then. This 1978 Endeavor 32 we picked up has a 2004 Westerbeke 20B Two engine in it with 270 hours, newer rigging, sails, and in-mast furling, new bronze thru-hulls, seacocks, and a recent full bottom job that repaired blisters and applied a barrier coat, and new anti-fouling.
How can you get your own free boat? Well, there's no secret to it. Be diligent about checking craigslist every day.

10 News Tampa Bay- Lives Are Saved By ResQDisc- Rescue Disk- Save a Life Disc
- Dr. Thomas Sytko , upon the death of his son , set out on a quest to develop a life saving device for drowning victims. After several failed attempts, the resQDisc was born. Despite the fact that a hired employee copied his design and several copy cats ensued, Dr. Sytko prevailed in manufacturing the most effective, well constructed, most loved and desired Rescue device. By holding to strict standards, such as using 500lb test rope rather that the cheaper twine used by copy cats, Tom's ResQDisc as become the Official Water & Ice Rescue Flotation Device. It is used by thousands of rescuers worldwide- U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. CoastGuard, State Police Nationwide, Fire and Rescue Teams in most every major city, Homeland Security, FBI, and other government agencies, life guard organizations worldwide and boat and yacht owners. Consider investing in a resQdisc and become a hero- the next life saved could be your own!
It was hard to believe that one man armed with nothing more than a thin rope attached to a Frisbee could save the lives of 6 people at one time, yet the story is true.
Many people enjoy the little river in Blount county, Tennessee for canoeing, boating, rafting, fishing and of course swimming. The Little river is generally very calm with the exception of springtime when reaches higher than normal levels from runoff after rainstorms. Boating and swimming mishaps are a regular concern throughout the year, however It is during this time of the year local rescue teams are on high alert.
This Tuesday morning started out to be a typical day in the life of Brian Willis, rescue volunteer for the Blount County Rescue team. Other than the severe tornado that ripped through Altoona three years ago killing 3 people and injuring 32, Brian had not yet experienced anything close to what he was about to on this warm spring day. After dropping his daughter off at the Vonore Grade School he was headed down 129 towards Tapoco to help out with supervising a Boy Scout canoe race involving merit badge qualifications for several local troops.
A day does not go by that Brian doesn't wonder if this will be the day he will be called to save a life. The extent of action he had experienced over two years was a hiker with broken leg, a rock climber with a broken arm and concussion from a fall, rattlesnake bite and burned feet from recklessly discarded coals.
The prior week Brian, along with two team members spent two hours on the shore of Lake Topoco practicing throwing a rescue disc, a Frisbee-type disc with 110 feet of 500 pound test rope wound around it like the sting on a yo yo. The Rescue Service had only just received 12 of these disks as a water rescue tool that is stored in a trunk or rescue bag. Brian quickly became proficient at tossing the rescue disc since he was already an expert with its smaller related cousin the Frisbee. What amazed Brian was the fact that it can be retrieved from the trunk, deployed and tossed to a drowning victim in less than 60 seconds.
As Brian passed the turnoff for I-72 and was unwrapping the second half of his snicker bar, a voice came blasting over the radio, Brian, what's you 20? He responded 129 and 72. Dispatch replied, Three victims thrown from raft quarter mile south of dam, first bend. Fortunately Brian knew exactly where that was and of a service road downstream from the rafters. He was only 5 minutes away! Sure enough, he reached the river just as the three heads came bobbing around the bend. He thought, how is this possible? There were three more right behind these three. No time to question what to do. With this rapid current, they would be passing by in seconds.
Brian grabbed the rescue disc from the back seat of the Jeep and in seconds unlatched the Velcro retainer strap while sprinting to the river's edge then unraveled several feet of line as he went and in one continuous motion slung the Frisbee shaped disc 80 feet out into the river, well passed the approaching people moments before they came rapidly floating by. Responding to Brian's directions to grab the rope, all six grabbed the line simultaneously as he quickly wrapped the line around his wrist, leaned back and dug in his heals. The current swung all six victims into shore where they all crawled to safety.
Brian clearly stated in his report that he not have been able to save one of those people without a rescue disc. He later discovered that the other three drowning victims had entered the water to attempt the rescue of the rafters and got swept away with them. If you live on a lake , river, pond, ocean or own a boat or spend time on a beach consider investing in the number one water rescue device available, a Frisbee-type rescue disc. The life it saves could be your own.. Article Source:

Friends Who Find Old Boat Abandoned In The Woods Are Stunned To See What’s Hiding Underneath
Dog discovers two tiny kittens under a boat at a bachelor party
Dogs have a great nose for trouble. They seem to find it no matter where it’s hiding—be it under the couch, along your most valuable possessions, or deep in the woods (watch out, squirrels!).
When a group of men headed off to a cabin for a bachelor party retreat, one of them decided to bring their dog along. Soon after arriving, the canine caught a scent and took off running!
When the guys finally caught up to her, she was transfixed on an abandoned metal boat near the cabin. The men then made a discovery that made them cancel their weekend plans altogether…

Sunshine Skyway Bridge
The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, spanning Florida's Tampa Bay, is the world's fifth largest cable-stay bridge with longest cable-stayed main span, with a length of 29,040 feet (exactly 5.5 miles or approximately 8.85 km).
It is constructed of steel and concrete. Twenty-one steel cables clad in nine-inch steel tubes along the center line of the bridge support the structure. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group, and built by the American Bridge Company.
In November 2005, an act of Florida Legislature officially named the current bridge the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, after the Governor of Florida who presided over its design and most of its construction. According to sources, he was inspired to suggest the current design by a visit to France, where he saw a similar cable-stayed bridge. The original bridge was dedicated to state engineer William E Dean, as noted on a plaque displayed at the south rest area of the bridge.
The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 in its special on the Top 10 Bridges in the World. The bridge is considered the flag bridge of Florida.
One of the major problems with the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is corrosion of the steel in the precast concrete segments. Because the segments are hollow, workers were able to enter the bridge superstructure in 2003 and 2004 to reinforce the corroded sections of the bridge, ensuring its future safety. Another problem arose around 2005/2006 when several news bureaus uncovered peeling paint on the bridge's cables. These paint splotches and patches were a result of touch-ups that were performed over the years but began to show through over recent years. FDOT is currently performing an overhaul which will include repainting the cables in their entirety (instead of touching up), rehabilitating the lighting system at the summit of the bridge, as well as repainting the concrete retaining walls.
Bridge disaster
The southbound span of the original bridge (the one built in 1969) was destroyed on May 9, 1980, when the freighter SS Summit Venture collided with a pier (support column) during a storm, sending over 1200 feet (366m) of the bridge plummeting into Tampa Bay. The collision caused six automobiles and a Greyhound bus to fall 150 feet (46 m), killing 35 people.
One man, Wesley MacIntire, survived the fall when his pickup truck landed on the deck of the Summit Venture before falling into the bay. He sued the company that owned the ship, and settled for $175,000 in 1984. For the remaining nine years of his life until he died in 1989, MacIntire was haunted by the fact that he was the only one to survive the fall off the collapsing bridge.
The pilot of the ship, John Lerro, was cleared of wrongdoing by both a state grand jury and a Coast Guard investigation. Although Lerro resumed his shipping duties soon afterward, he was forced to retire months later by the onset of multiple sclerosis, from which he died in 2002.
After the Summit Venture disaster, the northbound span carried one lane in either direction until the current bridge opened. The main span of the northbound bridge was demolished in 1993 and the approaches for both old spans were made into the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. These approaches sit 1/2 mile (0.8 km) to the south and west of the current bridge.
Graham's idea for the design of the current bridge won out over other proposals, including a tunnel (deemed impractical due to Florida's high water table) and a simple reconstruction of the broken section of the old bridge that would not have improved shipping conditions. The new bridge's main span is 50% wider than the old bridge. The piers of the main span and the approaches for 1/4 mile (0.4 km) in either direction are surrounded by large concrete barriers called dolphins that can protect the bridge piers from collisions with freighters larger than the Summit Venture.
