Beer City USA's Underground Scene - Home Brewing in Asheville, NC - Made in the USA, Episode 20
Asheville, North Carolina is a gorgeous mountain town that runs on beer. Visitors can visit any number of commercial breweries, but what they don't get to see is the vibrant community of home brewing that feeds this town's hunger for hops.
We spent some time with a few home brewers to check out this hobby (read: obsession) and see if it's possible to cross over from a few kegs in your garage to the big time. Maybe you'll see these beers in your favorite restaurant one day.

Asheville Brewery Expanding, Creating Jobs
BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- A popular Asheville brewery is creating jobs with a big expansion.
Wicked Weed broke ground on a new brewing facility in the Enka Commerce Park.
The existing building will be turned into a state of the art brew house that will brew 50,000 barrels a year, bringing about 85 new jobs. They say expanding will help them meet the growing demand.
We had such a great couple of years downtown at the pub. We really hit that point where we couldn't make any more beer and people still wanted our beer, Head Blender Walt Dickinson said.
The next logical step was well, we're going to need a bigger building that we can make beers like Freak of Nature, Double IPA, Tyranny, he says.
Wicked Weed bought the building from Buncombe County.
Commission chairman David Gantt says Wicked Weed is an investment in a big business that will trickle down to help many others.
They're buying a county building from us at fair market value so it's a win for the taxpayer, it's a win for Buncombe County, and it's a win for the Western North Carolina area, he says.
The county provided a $75,000 incentive to help with the expansion. Wicked Weed is making a $5 million initial investment with more expected as production ramps up. And then there's job creation. Dickinson says the facility will eventually employ about 85 people, 40 to be hired in the next few months.
That will be packaging, that will be warehouse. We're going to be hiring some more sales guys and delivery guys for the sales team, he says.
For one of the founding family members, this is all exciting.
This is just the next step. We can share our beer with more people, Denise Guthy said.
We're going to make the most beer per capita, or per city of anywhere in the United States, maybe anywhere in the world, Dickinson said.
Brewing equipment will be installed in June, with distribution of several beers expected by this Fall.

BHTV: The Buzz about Bee City USA in Asheville, NC
Asheville has long been known as Beer City USA, but did you know we’re also Bee City USA? Cities and towns across the country have made commitments to pollinators and become certified as Bee City USA affiliates.
BHTV: Bee City USA and Other Pollinators of WNC:
BHTV: Traditional and Urban Beekeeping in WNC:
Asheville has long been known as Beer City USA, but did you know we're also Bee City USA? In 2012, Asheville became the first to accept the title and responsibility of being an official bee city, launching a national movement. This commitment to creating more sustainable habitats for bees and other pollinators is echoed throughout Western North Carolina. From local beekeepers in the rural areas to urban gardeners in its cities, our community values its local environment and is working hard to protect it.
“Bee City USA is a program that started three years ago now, in 2012, right here in Asheville, North Carolina to get people involved in enhancing pollinator habitat,” says Phyllis Stiles, director of Bee City USA. “Most people have heard that honeybees are in trouble, that's pretty big headline news. In addition to that, there are hundreds of thousands of other species of animals around the world that enable 85% of the species in the world to reproduce. So Bee City USA was formed right here in Asheville to try to raise awareness and register certified cities in the cause of helping pollinators.”
“When we started in 2012, we started with one and we waited,” says Stiles. “And in 2014 in August, a little town called Talent, Oregon contacted me and said they'd like to be a Bee City USA. Since that time, 10 others have gone through the application process and now there're 12 in 5 states across the country and I'm in conversations with about 60 others. So the requests just keep coming and coming and it was especially exciting when neighboring Hendersonville voted on May 7th to become a Bee City USA. So it's growing!”
“We're doing all kinds of education with kids,” says Stiles. “In fact, one of the things that we frequently do at festivals, to which we're invited a great deal, is we make antennae and put them on kids and we even have adults ask us to make them antennae. So we just try to educate people about pollinators and to make new friends for pollinators.”
“This community is amazing!” says Stiles. “If Asheville had not said yes, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Somebody had to be the first, and so Asheville had the courage to be the first, and we'll be forever be grateful for that. The reception has been tremendous. This has been the best place to launch the program I can imagine.”
Cities and towns across the country are invited to follow Asheville's example. Make these commitments to pollinators and become certified as Bee City USA affiliates. For more information visit BeeCityUSA.org.

Asheville, Buncombe Co. Brewers & Alcohol Ag
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Representatives from all 19 breweries in Asheville and Buncombe County met with agents from the state's Alcohol Law Enforcement and Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission Friday to discuss some laws that confuse brewers and create uncertainty in the industry.
The Asheville Brewers Alliance requested the meeting on behalf of the breweries. They say some of the laws on the books are confusing, and they want to be compliant.
Two examples include beer flights and employee uniforms. Some brewers feared that flights may be illegal because they technically constitute more than one drink. The 2-4 oz. samples are often sold in four or five samples. Agents clarified at Friday's meeting that the total amount of beer sold in a flight should not exceed the largest single-serving amount of beer that the brewery sells.
Asheville Brewing Company owner Mike Rangel said he will change the way they sell flights starting Monday, reducing the 5-sample flight to only 4 samples of 4 ounces each, making it the same amount of beer as a pint.
It just makes sense, said Rangel. I don't think any of the brewers had much of a problem with what the agents explained.
ABA director Jennifer McLucas agreed that the meeting was very positive, as did ALE special agent in charge Stacy Cox.
Another law that caused some confusion was regarding employee uniforms. Employees cannot drink at the bar in their uniforms, and are not supposed to wear branded clothing promoting the brewery's beers. This law is to protect craft brewers, said McLucas, allowing them to compete with large macrobreweries.
It levels the playing field, McLucas said.
The ABA is now working on next steps following the meeting, including possibly suggesting modifications to existing rules to help brewers stay compliant.

A Visit To Asheville NC, (and some beer) | MOTM VLOG #47
This city had a shroud of mystery around it for us. Everyone we met had the same reaction to the mention of Asheville: “*GASP!* You HAVE to go to Asheville! You’ll love it!” We were told it was artsy, it was modern, it was laid-back, it was a college town, it was beautiful, it had the Biltmore Estate, it had tons of good shops and restaurants, it was a hippie town, it was progressive, and it was Beer City, USA.
We grabbed our bikes and found a parking spot about a mile outside of downtown. We rode in a ways before finding a place to lock up our bikes. We walked the streets, just noticing the people about, the colorful, earthy, high-end shops, the plethora of restaurant options. The art on the walls, an old bus turned into a hip little corner coffee shop. Like any city it had homeless people. It also had street musicians staked out in front of the cafes with the outdoor seating areas.
We walked the Pack Square Park with the county courthouse and City Hall, which is one of the Art Deco Masterpieces of Asheville. In 1943, World War II pilot Col. Robert Morgan was flying his Memphis Belle bomber on a nationwide tour to sell war bonds. On his way out of Asheville, he banked the craft 60 degrees and slipped it between the Courthhouse and the City Hall.
The next day we went to check out The Biltmore Estate. The Biltmore Estate is America's largest home, built by George Vanderbilt. It is an 8000-acre beautiful and grand estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC that many claim outshine many of the castles in Europe.
We had been told it was very beautiful. The drive into the estate entrance gate was gorgeous. Tickets were required to get close enough to SEE the house. We went into the Visitor/Ticket Center to see our options. When we learned it was going to be $65 per person to gain entry, we watched the free short info video of the history of the estate, and then we left. Maybe we will come back one day when we are a little less frugal.
We debated driving all the way out to the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. After the failed attempt to see the Biltmore Estate, we figured we should at least see something. We had been told by our friends RV Love that we should go and that it was BEAUTIFUL. We couldn’t help but wonder how a brewery could be beautiful….
Yes, you should go to Asheville. It is quite an experience. Like any city, it has tons to do, lots of great restaurants, and some interesting history. Some things will cost you a lot, but if you're vacationing on a budget there are definitely some cool places where you get a lot of bang for your buck. This one definitely had a unique vibe though - a little more laid back, a little more indie and artsy.
