Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Dells (#209)
[Latest Airdate: June 8, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 7, 2013]
Wow! And fun! Talk about something for everyone. The Wisconsin Dells has natural wonders and manmade adventures, decades-old businesses and brand new attractions - and we loved it all! Water -- as in a flood - is what formed the landscape, and water -- as in waterpark park capitol of the world -- is what makes the Wisconsin Dells the number one tourist destination in the State. Yes, John will try anything once, so he screams down the water slides, cruises up the rivers, bounces around the curves of the go cart track, and flies under the parking lot in a roller coaster and over a lake on a zipline. We discover HoChunk pride, appreciate HH Bennett's genius, and then there's Swiss Maid Fudge and Paul Bunyun's. Need we say more? (9 of 13)

Wisconsin Dells 2017
What do you get when you pack a family into a car and drive to Wisconsin Dells for a family vacation... A fun-filled few days with everlasting memories, that's what!
We stayed at the Blackhawk Motel, which is a place that holds a special spot in my heart. We indulged in Monk's burgers and Swiss Maid Fudge caramel apples. We soaked up sun by the pool and spent a day checking out every twist and turn of the waterslides at Noah's Ark. Some putting at Pirate's Cove Mini Golf, a ride on the Original Wisconsin Ducks, and a trip to the Wisconsin Dells Deer Park were all great experiences. A full trip of great experiences and we still barely scraped the top of all that Wisconsin Dells has to offer!
As a woman that spent a weekend at Wisconsin Dells every summer for the first 15 years of her life, this trip so many years later has brought me so much nostalgia. Thank you Boots' and Grandma for joining us on this trip!

Wisconsin Flag Proposal
Animation of a proposal for a new flag for the state of Wisconsin. Image here:
The description regarding the flag:
------------------------
The arrows represent the state motto 'Forward'.
The blue represents the lakes that border it.
The red represents where the name comes from, which I found in the Wikipedia entry:
The Algonquian word for Wisconsin and its original meaning have both grown obscure. Interpretations vary, but most implicate the river and the red sandstone that lines its banks. One leading theory holds that the name originated from the Miami word Meskonsing, meaning it lies red, a reference to the setting of the Wisconsin River as it flows through the reddish sandstone of the Wisconsin Dells.[7] Other theories include claims that the name originated from one of a variety of Ojibwa words meaning red stone place, where the waters gather, or great rock.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Wisconsin became a territorial possession of the United States in 1783 after the American Revolutionary War. However, the British remained in control until after the War of 1812, the outcome of which finally established an American presence in the area. Under American control, the economy of the territory shifted from fur trading to lead mining. The sudden influx of white miners prompted tension with the local Native American population. The Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832 culminated in the forced removal of Native Americans from most parts of the state. Following these conflicts, Wisconsin Territory was created by an act of the United States Congress on April 20, 1836. By fall of that year, the best prairie groves of the counties surrounding what is now Milwaukee were occupied by farmers from the New England states.
2. Wisconsin's official nickname is The Badger State,” but not because the state's forests are teeming with the fuzzy woodland creatures. In the early 19th century, lead was discovered in the tiny town of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Immigrants from Cornwall, England, settled in the region and dug mines. Some miners without homes lived in the tunnels during the winter months to keep warm, and their dwellings reminded people of badger holes. Today, the badger is proudly featured on Wisconsin's state flag and is also the official state animal.
3. Wisconsin is “America’s Dairyland.” As of 2015, the state had a total of 10,290 licensed dairy farms. Together, they produced 13.5 percent of the nation’s milk and 25.4 percent of its cheese. There are 3.4 million cows in this state of 5.7 million people.
4. Inventions from Wisconsin include the blender, the QWERTY keyboard layout, and—fittingly—a rapid beer-dispensing device called the TurboTap.
5. According to the Guinness World Records, Summerfest—an annual, 11-day music festival held along Lake Michigan’s shoreline in Milwaukee—is the world’s largest music festival. In 2015, the event drew 772,652 people.
6. Although Wisconsin is filled with rolling farms and prairies, 30 percent of the state's entire population lived in the five-county metropolitan area around Milwaukee as of 2014. But Madison is the actual capital of the state. Belmont was the original. The capital was established in 1836, when Wisconsin was not yet a state but a territory.
7. Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, is known as the Troll Capital of the World. A large main street called the Trollway is peppered with large statues of the mythical creatures, and visitors can purchase troll memorabilia in gift stores. The unusual theme was inspired by Nordic folklore, as the town was once more than 75 percent Norwegian.

House on the rock 2104 (my review)
This is a little review I have done oh The House on The Rock in Spring Green Wisconsin. It is about a hour from The Wisconsin Dells and took us 4 Hours to get there from Chicago although there was road construction on our way up.
If you like going to antique shops or getting lost in museums and thrift stores you may like The House on the Rock. We took all 3 guided tours and it took us about 4 hours to complete them. It was all walking and I mean A lot of walking. You also have the option of just purchasing 1 tour or 2 if youd like. Some parts of the tour are cold in the winter and hot in the summer due to no heat or ac in those parts of the buildings.
The in the house there are quite a bit of large collections of various things including oddities and rare stuff.
I hope you like the review its just so give you some in site to what it actually is about.
Thanks for watching.
