Ep. 122: Padre Island National Seashore | Texas RV travel camping
We share all sorts of sights and sounds around Padre Island and its namesake National Seashore in this episode, including camping at Padre Balli County Park and boondocking right on the sand at North Beach, which should be a bucket list camping experience for any beach lover or surf fisherman. We also go kayaking on Laguna Madre at Bird Island Basin, and visit the bayside city of Corpus Christi, and Port Aransas on adjacent Mustang Island, where they're still recovering from Hurricane Harvey's landfall two years later. But we start off with an interview with the king and queen of Texas camping, Tom & Stacie Langland from @RVTexasYall.

Weekend on Padre Island | Padre Bali County Park | RV Texas Y'all
We interrupt our #BeyondTX videos to share our recent weekend trip to Padre Island on the Texas Gulf Coast. RV Camping options down on Padre range from free beach camping to full hookups for rigs of all sizes. We went down planning to try beach camping, but the high tide warnings changed our minds.
In this video, we show you Malaquite Campground which offers dry camping with a view of the gulf inside Padre Island National Seashore. Then we move up the coast about 12 miles to Padre Bali County Park so we can plug the rig in and run the air conditioners at night (it was still pretty warm during our visit).
We can't wait to go back down and spend a couple of weeks in the area when it cools down a bit! Watch for another Padre Island video in the future!

By the way, if you're wondering about the material hanging from our awning, that is our Sunblocker ( ). It provides more shade under the awning by defusing the sun that comes from that angle (in this case, the afternoon sun). We normally have the bottom tied down so it doesn't blow around like it did here. It can make our awning area MUCH cooler on a hot day.

Gulf of Mexico beach located on the south side of Corpus Christi and accessible via Texas Route 358 and John F Kennedy Memorial Causeway.

Free car parking on the paved areas, permit-only parking on the sand areas.
The only thing I did not like on this particular beach: you have to pay for public showers, free showers in South Padre Island and Galveston, Texas.

At the beginning of spring, 2919, the Two Tired Teachers took a 10 day trip which ended at the Padre Island National Seashore in Corpus Christi, TX.
One of our favorite things about the trip is that we were litereally parked on the beach for free. Another thing the Two Tired Teachers loved about staying on the beach was the sound of the waves all night.
Finding specific information about the park is not easy, so the Two Tired Teachers break it down in the video. First, cross the causeway and continue driving. You will enter the Padre Island National Seashore.
From there, you have four camping options. The first is the North Beach. This one is absolutely free if you don't need any hookups for the duration of the stay. Find a place on a mile of beach, and park close to the dunes.
We, however, needed to empty our tanks and get fresh potable water. For that, you need to enter the fee area. The fee area includes a dump station, a place to get potable water, access to the visitors center, and access to both flush and vault toilets.
To enter the fee area costs $10 for one night or $20 for 2 - 14 nights. If you have an America the Beautiful pass, the entrance fee is waived. The ranger at the fee station told us if we bought the $80 pass, they would go ahead and let us use it that day. Since our plan is to visit more national parks, we bought the pass.
The seond camping option is Bird Island Basin, a place used for windsurfing. The fee for that area is $8 plus the entrance fee. You are at the water, but the camping area is a parking lot where you are relatively tightly slotted next to your neighbors.
Bird Basin Island is a premiere sight in the US for windsurfing. As a matter of fact, The windsurfing area is ranked by Windsurfing Magazine as the best flat water sailing site in the continental USA.
Worldwinds is the pro shop at Bird Isand Basin. They offer lessons as well as equipment rental.
Another camping option is Malaquite Campground. At that campground, there are flush toilets. The fee for Malaquite is $14 a night. It is asphalt, so you don't drive on sand. Also, the wind probably wouldn't be as strong since Malaquite is behind the dunes.

The fourth camping place is the South Beach. You keep following the causeway road, and you will hit the South Beach. The first five miles are for two wheel drive, and the last 55 miles are for four wheel drive.
South Beach is another free camping area. The only thing you are charged is the entrance fee to the park.
All of the camping at the National Seashore at Padre Island is first come, first serve. Each of the campgrounds have a kiosk. You need to stop there and register.
A last option is Mustang Island, a Texas State Park. As of March, 2019, the park wasn't open for camping because of the damage from Hurricane Harvey. If you are staying at Mustang Island, you will not be staying on the beach. The camping there is on a parking lot, but you do have water and electric hook ups.
Wildlife at the park includes, the black skimmer, a bird that fishes morning and evening. In the video you can see them splashing in the water as they try to catch fish.
We also saw ghost crabs. They are shy creatures which burrow in the sand when anyone approaches them.
The trip was extremely enjoyable; however, there are some negatives to camping on the beach. Sand gets in and on everything. It is very important to visit a car wash soon after you leave the park because of the sand.
Nueces County to improve Padre Balli Park camp sites
Nueces County officials toured three coastal park sites with improvements slated to start this year. Padre Balli Park will get upgrades to its camp site.

The entire South Padre Island, Texas drive from its northernmost drivable point (end of State Park Rd 100) to its southernmost point, Isla Blanca Park.
The road it's called State Park Road 100 when within Cameron County jurisdiction and Padre Blvd when inside the beach resort itself.

Ep. 121: South Padre Island | Texas RV travel camping
Our RV tour of the western half of Texas continues. Our intention coming here had been to boondock right on the sand at Boca Chica Beach, the southernmost point in Texas. However, we opted to move over to Isla Blanca County Park on South Padre Island for several reasons that we'll show and explain. While visiting South Padre Island we explore the town and Port Isabel, venture onto the deserted beaches north of town, gawk at the SpaceX Starship on the launch pad, learn the local history, drive the beach on this barrier island, see sea turtles in the wild, go kayaking in the bay, and check out some of the local off-season nightlife while dining at Laguna Bob's.

North Padre Island Holiday Inn Hurricane Alex Weather Report 6/30/2010
So we found out a hurricane was coming towards us yesterday and panicked. We did exactly what any other normal couple would do-we went straight to the beer store! In all seriousness, this is our first hurricane to hit here in Texas since we moved here 5 days ago from N.C. Seth insisted we go ride bikes around the island and check out the wind, but I (Lauren) talked him out of it. We hopped in the truck and went for a ride down to Bali Park and then the Holiday Inn beach front. It's only 12:30 pm on Wednesday, and we've heard that the worst of the weather won't hit us until midnight tonight. The wind is still fairly strong- and the water is coming all the way up to the seawall on the beach. Anyway, we're loving it down here in the Lone Star State and this is just one more chapter in our adventure. More to come, I'm sure.
