The Royal Palace of Milan was the seat of government of the Italian city of Milan for many centuries. Today it serves as a cultural centre and home to expositions and exhibitions. Originally designed with a structure of two courtyards, the palace was then partially demolished to make room for the Duomo.
The palace is located to the right of the facade of the cathedral opposite the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The facade of the building follows the style of the ancient courtyard, forming a recess in respect to Piazza del Duomo, known as the Piazzetta Reale (English: Small Royal Square).
The magnificent Hall of Caryatids can be found on the main floor of the building. It occupies the site of the old theatre, which burned down in 1776 and is the only room that survived the heavy bombings of 1943. The damage caused by the incendiary and violent air movement was followed by a state of abandonment for over two years, which contributed to further serious damage to the building. Many of the neoclassical interiors of the Palace were lost.
The royal palace has ancient origins. It was first called the Palazzo del Broletto Vecchio and was the seat of city's government during the period of medieval communes in the Middle Ages. The palace became a key political centre during the rules of the Torriani, Visconti and Sforza households. After the construction of the Cathedral, the palace was heavily renovated under the government of Francesco Sforza.
Only at the beginning of the 21st century, more than fifty years after its destruction during the war, did the Royal Palace find again a central role in the social and cultural life of Milan. While it is currently in the third stage of its restoration, the palace did still not recover its entire ancestral magnificent. Visitors can admire the halls of the Palace Museum with an itinerary through the four seasons of the historic Palazzo: the era Teresiana and Neoclassical, the Napoleonic era, the Restoration and the Unification of Italy.
The restoration took place through a complex task of reconstruction of the original furnitures, to articulate historical and stylistic representation of the life of the Court. The first visible halls belonging to the neoclassical period, with reconstruction ranging from Giuseppe Piermarini to Napoleonic times, are those that best explain the splendor of the enlightened era, during which the city had a major role in Europe. The third phase of restoration, still in progress, will return to the museum the rooms of the old Apartment of Reserve, in which the life of the royalty during the 19th century is documented and maintained.
The Royal Palace is a cultural centre in the heart of the city, coordinated in conjunction with three other exhibition venues: the Rotonda della Besana, the Palace of Region and Palazzo dell'Arengario. The building played an important role regarding Milanese's art, as shown by the great success of recent years exhibitions that included Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and other painters and sculptors. A central piece was the exhibition opening at the Palazzo Reale in 2009 on the centenary of the birth of Futurism.

I'm thrilled to share that 5 large scale pieces from The Wonderland Series have gone on display at the Palazzo Reale Milano in Milan (The Royal Palace) as part of their summer exhibition “Luxus – Lo Stupore della Bellezza”. The exhibition is described as a journey of aesthetic education aimed to understand the history and meaning of Luxury curated by Stefano Zecchi. It is displayed throughout 10 of the royal apartment rooms, mine is entitled 'The Secret Garden' and is by far the most beautiful and prestigious location Wonderland has ever been displayed in. Di Piazze del Duomo in Italia ce ne sono tante, ma nessuna è famosa come quella di Milano!
Nacque ben 700 anni fa, quando si cominciò a sentire l'esigenza di dare una degna cornice al Duomo, ma nel corso dei secoli ha cambiato più volte fisionomia. L'aspetto che ha oggi nasce da un concorso pubblico, che invitava i cittadini a presentare proposte per una sistemazione definitiva della piazza: il vincitore fu Giuseppe Mengoni, che costruì anche la famosa Galleria dove puoi fare shopping prima di andare a vedere Piazza della Scala. La Galleria fu terminata nel 1877.
Adesso metti in pausa e vai all'Arengario.
Anche su questo lato, come su quello della Galleria, la piazza è abbellita da portici ottocenteschi, ma noterai il forte contrasto di stile rispetto ai due palazzi gemelli, che risalgono al 1930. Con la loro geometria essenziale, costituiscono un esempio eloquente del “razionalismo”, lo stile tipico dell’Italia nel periodo fascista...
