Provincia di Lecce (IT) - Palazzo Adorno

Palazzo Celestini – Introduction – Lecce – Audio guide – MyWoWo Travel App
Hi, my name's Jill, and I'm your personal guide. Along with MyWoWo, I'd like to welcome you to one of the Wonders of the World: Palazzo Celestini.
Palazzo Celestini used to be the Convent of the Celestines, a branch of the large Benedictine Order. Today it houses the Prefecture of Lecce.
This building is part of a single complex along with the Basilica of Santa Croce, and was built at the same time, starting from 1549, based on a project by the same architect, Gabriele Riccardi, who also designed the cloister.
The magnificent facade was built between 1659 and 1695 by two Lecce architects: Giuseppe Zimbalo, who designed the bottom level, and Giuseppe Cino, who designed the top level.
Observe the impressively long facade, embellished with two small loggias at the sides: it is divided into two levels by the horizontal cornice, and divided vertically by eleven elements, between the large windows and the central door, richly decorated with cherubs and bunches of fruit. The impression we have is that the abundance of ornamentation on the facade of the nearby Basilica of Santa Croce has been structured into a more orderly architectural style, marked by half columns alternating with 21 windows...

Palace of the Celestines, Lecce, Apulia, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo dei Celestini, for three centuries the seat of the convent of the Celestine fathers, is a baroque monument of Lecce. The palace and the basilica of Santa Croce constitute a single complex. The monastery was already established in 1352 by the Count of Lecce and Duke of Athens, Gualtieri VI of Brienne. This complex, entrusted from the beginning to the celestines, was located on the area occupied today by the castle. In fact, in 1549, following the will of Charles V to expand the walls and build a new fortress, the convent was demolished and the Celestines settled in the current site. The new complex was built starting from 1549, on a project by Riccardi, to whom we owe the original cloister and the portal of the annexed Basilica of Santa Croce. The major works were carried out in the 1600s. The long prospect (1659-1695) was the work of two architects from Lecce; Giuseppe Zimbalo and Giuseppe Cino, who built the first and second orders respectively. The orders of the façade are divided vertically by pilasters. The façade is enriched by two loggias placed on the sides, by numerous windows decorated with elaborate cornices and by a frieze decorated with heraldic shields. The entrance portal, located in the center, presents a decoration of putti and bunches of fruit. After the suppression of the orders, which took place in 1807, the monastery became a Government building. It currently houses the offices of the Prefecture and of the Province.
Palazzo Celestini – Introduzione – Lecce – AudioGuida – MyWoWo Travel App

Places to see in ( Lecce - Italy )
( Lecce - Italy ) is a historic city of 94,766 inhabitants (2015) in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Lecce, the third province in the region by population, as well as one of the most important cities of Apulia. It is the main city of the Salentine Peninsula, a sub-peninsula at the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is over 2,000 years old.
Because of the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed The Florence of the South. The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. To this day, in the Grecìa Salentina, a group of towns not far from Lecce, the griko language is still spoken.
In terms of industry the Lecce stone - a particular kind of Limestone is one the city's main exports, because it is very soft and workable, thus suitable for sculptures. Lecce is also an important agricultural centre, chiefly for its olive oil and wine production, as well as an industrial centre specializing in ceramic production.
Roman Amphitheatre: built in the 2nd century and situated near Sant'Oronzo Square, was able to seat more than 25,000 people. It is now half-buried because other monuments were built above it over the centuries. The theatre is currently used for different religious and arts events.
Column of statue of St Oronzo: (Lecce's patron) was given to Lecce by the city of Brindisi, because Saint Oronzo was reputed to have cured the plague in Brindisi. The column was one of a pair that marked the end of the Appian Way, the main road between Rome and southern Italy.
Torre del Parco (Park Tower) is one of the medieval symbols of Lecce. It was erected in 1419 by the then-18 years old Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini, prince of Lecce. The tower, standing at more than 23 metres (75 ft), is surrounded by a ditch in which bears (the heraldic symbol of the Orsini del Balzo) were reared. The whole complex was the seat of Orsini's tribunal and of a mint, and after Giovanni Antonio's death, it became a residence for the Spanish viceroys.
Palazzo Sedile: Palace was built in 1592 and was used by the local council until 1852.
Castle of Charles V: built in 1539–49 by Gian Giacomo dell'Acaja. It has a trapezoidal plan with angular bastions. It is attached to the Politeama Greco Opera House, inaugurated on 15 November 1884.
Triumphal Arch (Arco di Trionfo, commonly called Porta Napoli, Neapolitan Gate) which is one of the three gates to enter Lecce's historical city centre, erected in 1548 in honor of Charles V. It replaced an older gate, Porta S. Giusto, which, according to tradition, lay over the tomb of the namesake saint. Also built over pre-existing medieval gates are the current Porta San Biagio (St. Blaise Gate) .
Palazzo dei Celestini, now seat of the Province of Lecce. It was built in 1659–95 and designed by Giuseppe Zimbalo.
The city's obelisk, erected in 1822 in honour of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.
The Archaeological Museum Sigismondo Castromediano.
The Archaeological Museum Faggiano.
Church of the Holy Cross: Construction of the Chiesa di Santa Croce) was begun in 1353, but work halted until 1549.
Lecce Cathedral: The church was originally built in 1144, rebuilt in 1230, then totally restored in the 1659–70 by Giuseppe Zimbalo, who also built the five storey 70-metre (230 ft) high bell tower, with an octagonal loggia.
San Niccolò and Cataldo The church is an example of Italo-Norman architecture. It was founded by Tancred of Sicily in 1180. In 1716 the façade was rebuilt, with the addition of numerous statues, but maintaining the original Romanesque portal. The walls were frescoed during the 15th-17th centuries.
Celestine Convent: Built (1549–1695) in Baroque-style by Giuseppe Zimbalo. The courtyard was designed by Gabriele Riccardi.
Santa Irene: This church was commissioned in 1591 by the Theatines and dedicated to Saint Irene . The architect was Francesco Grimaldi). It has a large façade showing different styles in the upper and lower parts. Above the portal stands a statue of Ste Irene (1717) by Mauro Manieri. The interior is on the Latin cross plan and is rather sober. The main altarpiece is a copy of the St Michael the Archangel by Guido Reni. The high altar has a Transport of the Holy Ark by Oronzo Tiso. In the right transept is one of the largest altars in Lecce, dedicated to Saint Cajetan (1651).

Palace of the Seminary, Lecce, Apulia, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo del Seminario is a palace located in Piazza del Duomo, in the historic center of Lecce, built between 1694 and 1709 in the Baroque style of Lecce. It was commissioned by the bishop Michele Pignatelli to the architect Giuseppe Cino. The designer, in drawing the prospectus of the Seminary, went back to the facade of the Palazzo dei Celestini. The monumental façade consists of a lower structure with two floors, with an articulated decorative elaboration, and a third upper floor, designed by the architect Manieri, more simple and linear. The façade of the two lowered ashlar floors is punctuated by a giant order of pilasters raised by pedestals between which there are two sets of eight windows with rich framing. At the center of the facade the access portal is dominated by a large balcony with a three-arched window. The order is crowned by a balustrade formed by small columns interspersed with small pillars. On the side walls there are eight busts in Lecce stone depicting the doctors of the Church. At the center of the atrium is a well decorated as a basket with a handle, by Cino. Inside the palace there is a chapel from 1696, which preserves paintings by San Gregorio Taumaturgo of 1696, by Paolo De Matteis, by San Vincenzo di Zaragoza and Santa Domenica. On the first floor the building houses the Diocesan Museum and the Biblioteca Innocenziana, named after the name assumed by Pope Innocent XII who had been bishop of the city. The library contains over ten thousand volumes, some of which are also from the fifteenth and sixteenth century.
