Bordeaux Paris 50 years after Jacques Anquetil. Nicolas Roux
In 1965 the great French champion Jaques Anquetil made history by winning the 8 day Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré before transferring immediately to the start of Bordeaux-Paris, the world's longest single day classic. At the time it seemed unthinkable but Anquetil not only raced but he went on to win the 557km race less than 24 hours later! To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this historic occasion, Mavic ambassador Nicolas Roux re-created the great Bordeaux-Paris ride. Starting at 1am near Bordeaux, passing the Chateaux de la Loire (Castles of Loire) and finally pacing behind the derny just like Anquetil. See how Nicolas battles against the 600km distance and changing weather conditions on his own historic ride.

Paris, France Video Tour
A Video Tour of Paris, France. Paris France Points of Interest & Paris France Attractions. Many guests choose to enjoy a tour of Paris before or after their cruise. Paris, the ‘City of Lights', is one of the world's truly great cities. The River Seine, lifeblood of the city, splits it neatly in two, flowing past the Ile de la Cité and the famous cathedral of Notre Dame. The history and culture of Paris can also be discovered throughout its distinctive districts. The village atmosphere of hilly Montmartre with its elegant landmark the Sacre Coeur; the Marais district and its winding streets that evoke medieval Paris; and the grand 19th century boulevards that dominate so much of the city.
Paris, France
Paris has so much to offer with its huge variety of heritage, architecture and culture, from the grace of the Louvre Museum, to the ultra-modern Opera de la Bastille; from the wondrous Eiffel Tower, to the Champs-Elysées headed by the Arc de Triomphe. All this, together with wonderful restaurants and some of the best shopping in the world make Paris an unmissable place to visit.
The stylish 12 passenger Panache & the deluxe 8 passenger La Nouvelle Etoile either begin or end many of their cruises in the heart of Paris throughout the year. Whether entering Paris from the north from Picardy, the east from Champagne or south from Burgundy, passing the infamous Eiffel Tower and the magnificent Notre Dame is always one of the great highlights of the cruise.
Many people choose to visit Paris before or after their cruise, a visit in contrast to the peace and relaxation of the cruise itself. This is why the crew of all of our barges which cruise in Burgundy, including our deluxe flag ship La Renaissance, pick you up and drop you off in the heart of Paris, a transfer by air conditioned mini bus included in the price of the cruise.
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Cloudy at the start, rain in mid-race, sunny at the finish
**At 11km a break went away, including Minali and several of his Gewiss team-mates, Museeuw with several Mapeis. Sixteen of the 22 teams were represented in the break and it was left to Lotto and Motorola, who were not represented, to wind up a vigorous pursuit which dropped several riders off the back of the peloton. The gap between the 29 and the peloton rached 55 seconds at km40 and it was only at km61 that the junction was made. The easing of the pace that followed allowed a group of those who had been dropped, including French champion Eddy Seigneur (GAN) to rejoin the peloton.
**After the regrouping, Anti (Mutuelle de Seine-et-Marne) attacked at Bonneval (km66) but was quickly brought back. At km76 his team-mate Stephane Cueff broke clear, receiving the assistance of Seigneur at km85. The break of two's lead stretched to 16 minutes at km123.
**The peloton took a long time to react to any efffect and Cueff and Seigneur's lead was still 13.25 at the feed 100km from the finish. But then the initiative of the Gewiss, Telekom, Novell and TVM teams rapidly brought their lead down -- 8 mins at 50km to go, then 1.30 at 25km. Cueff was caught at km 229 and Seigneur a little later with 15km to the finish.
**Fodriest (Lampre) attacked in the last climb followed by Minali (Gewiss), Museeuw (Mapei) and Missaglia (Brescialat). Museeuw and Missaglia kept forcing to 900m from the line when they were engulfed by the sprint which Minali took cleanly.
Quote of the day: Fondriest--Every year I try to get away on this climb. This year I tried to wait just a little longer. But I had Minali in my wheel and he didn't want to work on a break. I've already had a third at Chaville [when the same race was Blois-Chaville], third at Tours, then second behind Museeuw. I hope that I'll end up winning.

The Canal Saint-Martin in Paris is being dredged for the first time in 15 years.
Fish are evacuated ahead of the operation and all the water is transferred into the capital's River Seine.
A favourite hangout for the French capital's bobos -- or bourgeois bohemians -- the waterway will take three months and millions of euros to drain and clean.
As rolled up carpet…

City Walks: Paris, France - Sacre Coeur to Notre Dame - virtual walking treadmill video
This City Walks takes place in Paris as I walk down from Sacre Coeur to Notre Dame on the Ile de Cite. Still working on my technique but getting some good feed back to work with.
Wikipedia:
Sacre Couer -
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur (French: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark and the second most visited monument in Paris, the basilica stands at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur Basilica is above all a religious (Catholic) building, shown by its perpetual adoration of the Holy Eucharist since 1885, and is also seen as a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the defeat of France in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War and for the socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular devotion since the visions of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque.
Notre Dame -Notre-Dame de Paris referred to simply as Notre-Dame,[a] is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral is consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its pioneering use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, as well as the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style.[7] Major components that make Notre Dame stand out include one of the world's largest organs and its immense church bells.[8]
The cathedral's construction was begun in 1160 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely complete by 1260, though it was modified frequently in the following centuries. In the 1790s, Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the French Revolution; much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. In the 19th century, the cathedral was the site of the coronation of Napoleon I and funerals of many Presidents of the Republic.
Popular interest in the cathedral blossomed soon after the publication, in 1831, of Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame de Paris (better known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). This led to a major restoration project between 1844 and 1864, supervised by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. . Beginning in 1963, the cathedral's façade was cleaned of centuries of soot and grime. Another cleaning and restoration project was carried out between 1991 and 2000.
The cathedral is one of the most widely recognized symbols of the city of Paris and the French nation.
The cathedral has been progressively stripped of its original decoration and works of art. Several noteworthy examples of Gothic, Baroque, and 19th-century sculptures and a group of 17th- and early 18th-century altarpieces remain in the cathedral’s collection. The most important relics in Christendom, including the Crown of Thorns, a sliver of the true cross and a nail from the true cross, are preserved at Notre-Dame.
While undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019. Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the flèche (the timber spire over the crossing) and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling.
The basilica was designed by Paul Abadie. Construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1914. The basilica was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919
