Malaysia | Cik Bazilah Pi Pulau Pinang, part 1: Touchdown in George Town
We have arrived in Penang! Checked in (Unfortunately, no videos of our hotel) and took a taxi to 'surprise' my sister at the Penang State Museum. Quite a small size museum to learn about the history of Penang and the races that have come to settle in this world heritage city; but I enjoyed it because after all that travelling and an intense revision session the past week, my brain could no longer absorb a vast amount of knowledge at that time. What interests me the most was the Kitab Kuning which I have learned about in my Islamic Civilization module which marked the beginning of the Malay-Islamic civilization in Southeast Asia - can't believe that I actually got to see it. Oh one more thing, the Chinese room with all the Nyonya Kebayas (have always been a sucker for Nyonya Kebayas)!!
After that, had our first Nasi Kandar at the restaurant just outside our hotel's street (were we lucky or what?)! a good first meal in Penang. Took a stroll, just to see what's in the area before heading back to the hotel cos we were knackered and have yet to plan for the upcoming days!
The Chulia in Penang
The Chulias in Penang is a book by Khoo Salma Nasution on the Tamil Muslim community in Penang. This is the culmination of years of research stretching back to the 1990s. It encapsulates every aspect of the Chulias, their history as Muslim traders and seafarers, their architecture, customs, language, religious beliefs, political affiliations and more.
A Jewish cemetery in George Town, Malaysia
The island of Penang, at the northern end of the Strait of Malacca, was once part of the British Straits Settlements (one of the other parts was Singapore, at the Strait's southern end.) Located on a busy trade route, the island acquired a very diverse population; today it is home to thriving ethnic Chinese, Indian, and Malay communities, and to a variety of different religions.
In times gone by there was also a significant Jewish community here, large enough by 1805 to warrant the establishment of a Jewish cemetery, located on what used to be called Jahudi (Jewish) Rd (now Jalan Zainal Abidin, shown in the opening scene of the video.) The oldest gravestone in the cemetery is dated 1835; the most recent (and quite possibly the last) burial here was in 2011.
After writing about this place on my blog in 2010, I was contacted by a former member of Penang's Jewish community asking for suggestions on how he might find out whether his sister is buried here. It occurred to me that others might have a similar interest in this place, and so on a later visit in March 2013 I photographed all the graves (photographs at picasaweb.google.com/donaldNR/ ,) and made this short video to given an idea of what the cemetery looks and sounds like. The cemetery is tended by a caretaker and his family, who also raise geese and turkeys on the property. The caretaker told me he has lived there since the Japanese times, (the early to mid1940s.) I have high resolution photographs of all of the graves, and I am happy to share them with anyone who is interested.
ULTRA SPICY Penang Street Food + TRADITIONAL Malaysian Breakfast Tour
Instagram:
my personal vlog channel:
Day 2 in Georgetown, Penang, MALAYSIA! We start off our second day in Asia’s food heaven at the Chowrasta Markets, sampling the local fried street food, then heading just across the street to the famed Toh Soon Cafe for a TRADITIONAL Malaysian breakfast like you’ve never seen before! Delicious and smooth Hainan Coffee, creamy half boiled egg and charcoal grilled Kaya Toast is sure to awaken your tastebuds.
After breakfast, we head over to Penang Road for one special stall that sells the best Chendul (Green Jelly Dessert) in all of Malaysia! Cheap, tasty and undeniably refreshing on a hot Malaysian day. After that, a quick stroll down Chulia Street leads us to the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and right outside is the most fragrant and mouth watering Nasi Kandar - an Indian Muslim rice dish filled with so many spices it puts the colonel to shame.
But our journey doesn’t end there! A quick break to the Clan Jetties and Penang, Wonderfood Museum (with huge sculptures of local Penang food) and we’re back eating at the Chulia Street Markets! The Curry Mee (Noodles) here were my absolutely favorite, one of the spiciest noodle dishes I’ve had so far and SO FULL of flavor! We also try Lok Lok, a street food hotpot and finally end our night with some extremely satisfying Wan Tan Mee. Day 2 well spent!

Historical Place to Visit in Penang | MASJID KAPITAN KELING
Kapitan Keling Mosque is a Penang landmark. Built in 1801 by Penang’s first Indian Muslim settlers (East India Company troops), the Indo-Moorish structure is set at the junction of Lebuh Buckingham and Lebuh Pitt. It is the largest mosque in Georgetown and looks sublime at sunset.
