Places to see in ( Milan - Italy ) Piazza della Scala
Piazza della Scala is a pedestrian central square of Milan, Italy, connected to the main square of Milan, Piazza del Duomo, by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II passage. It is named after the renowned Teatro alla Scala opera house, which occupies the north-western side of the square; the building actually includes both the opera house and the Museo Teatrale alla Scala (La Scala Museum), dedicated to the history of La Scala and opera in general. On the opposite side to La Scala, to the south-east, is the facade of Palazzo Marino, Milan's city hall.
Another relevant building on the square, on the north-eastern side, is the Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana. The south-western side of the square has the entry to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele as well as Palazzo Beltrami. Most of the architecture of the square is due to architect Luca Beltrami, who designed the eponymous palace, the facade of Palazzo Marino, and the Banca Commerciale Italiana building. The centre of the square is marked by the monument of Leonardo da Vinci by sculptor Pietro Magni (1872).
Piazza della Scala is a relatively recent addition to the plan of Milan's centre. The oldest building on the square, Palazzo Marino, dates back to the 16th century (completed in 1563); at the time, nevertheless, the square did not exist (the area was occupied by buildings). In fact, the main facade of Palazzo Marino was originally the one facing Piazza San Fedele, to the south-east (i.e., exactly opposite to Piazza della Scala). Likewise, when La Scala was built (in 1778), it was facing a street rather than a square. It was only in the late 19th Century that the authorities of Milan initiated a thorough renovation of the area, which involved the creation of the square. Luca Beltrami first contributed with Palazzo Beltrami (1886), then with the new facade of Palazzo Marino (1888-1892), and, much later, with the Banca Commerciale building (1923-1927).

La Scala Opera House and its square - a short video guide
La Scala Opera House is one of the most celebrated in the world. Discover how La Scala and its square are more than just a theatre for the Milanese.
Caption:
You are now in the La Scala square, the most celebrated square of Milan together with the Duomo square. I like to point out how this square summarizes all the aspects which make Milan a city of capital importance: culture, finance, trade, political power and fashion. Let's start with La Scala Opera House. Built in 1778, it's arguably the most important and celebrated Opera House in the world. Sometimes tourists are a bit puzzled by the fact that its facade is somewhat unimpressive. I agree, the facade is a bit understating, but its interiors are amazing, a treasure chest of gilded decorations. And you can see them without having to fight for an opera ticket! Simply head for the La Scala Museum, on the left hand side of the Opera House, and if they are not setting up a show you will get the chance to have a look at the Theatre's magnificent interior.
On the left side of the square you can see the former headquarters of the Commercial Bank of Italy. Financial Power has always been important in Milan, which is in fact Italy's financial capital. The building now hosts a brand new museum, showing the bank's rich artistic collection. It's certainly worth a visit,
because of its collection, spanning from the XIX century to contemporary Arte Povera artists,
because of its unusual setting in a former bank building,
and, last but not least, because it's completely free!
Opposite the Opera House there is Palazzo Marino, Milan's City Hall, where the political power of the City resides. Not surprisingly, being Milan so finance-centered, this building was primarily built as the house of a banker in the XVI century. It is now the center of Milan's political power, and sometimes it hosts free art exhibitions.
Finally, you can see the entrance of the celebrated Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. It was the oldest shopping mall in Italy, built at the end of the XIX century, and it connects La Scala square with the Duomo square. It hosts plenty of elegant fashion shops and features a magnificent marble floor under an impressive glass and steel vault. It also has a kind of sinister flavour, because, its designer Giuseppe Mengoni, died by falling down from the glass dome just after the inauguration - if it was accident or suicide will remain an unsolved mystery.
Please have a look at the statue in the center of the square. Can you recognize it? It is the statue of Leonardo da Vinci, who lived in Milan for 17 years and left here an important mark, symbolized especially by the Last Supper.

The Gallerie di Piazza Scala (or Gallerie d'Italia - Piazza Scala) is a modern and contemporary museum in Milan, Italy. Located in Piazza della Scala in the Palazzo Brentani and the Palazzo Anguissola, it hosts 195 artworks from the collections of Fondazione Cariplo with a strong representation of nineteenth century Lombard painters and sculptors, including Antonio Canova and Umberto Boccioni. A new section was opened in the Palazzo della Banca Commerciale Italiana on October 25, 2012 with 189 art works from the twentieth century.
Located in Palazzo Anguissola Antona Traversi and Palazzo Brentani - neoclassical buildings that face the elegance of Via Manzoni - 197 works of art from the Fondazione Cariplo and Intesa Sanpaolo collections, subdivided into 13 sections and 23 rooms, lead the visitor through a long and fascinating exhibition that traverses an entire epoch of art history, the Italian nineteenth century.
Comprising thirteen superb bas-reliefs by Antonio Canova from the end of the eighteenth century, plus, four pre-futurist masterpieces by Umberto Boccioni, the nineteenth century collection also contains priceless works by masters such as Francesco Hayez, Gerolamo Induno, Angelo Inganni, Giovanni Segantini and Gaetano Previati.
The section dedicated to twentieth-century art - 189 works divided into 12 sections - is situated in the historical premises of the Banca Commerciale Italiana, constructed by Luca Beltrami at the beginning of the last century in Piazza della Scala.
The first section of the Cantiere del '900 exhibition proposes the main artistic movements of the period - Informal, Spatialism, Arte Nucleare, MAC, Kinetic and Programmed Art, Arte Povera, Conceptual Art, Italian Pop Art – created by artists like Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti, Bruno Munari, Renato Guttuso, Alberto Burri, Emilio Vedova, Mimmo Rotella, Enrico Baj, Piero Dorazio, Tancredi, Gastone Novelli, Piero Manzoni, Gianfranco Pardi and Emilio Isgrò. The exhibition rooms of the three historical palazzi have been designed by the architect Michele De Lucchi to meet the needs of the museum itinerary, curated by Fernando Mazzocca.
