Exploring Ft. Worden bunkers with family, light house, Pt Townsend
Fort Worden and accompanying Fort Worden Historical State Park are located in Port Townsend, along Admiralty Inlet in Washington state.[1] It is on 433 acres (175 ha) that originally was a United States Army installation to protect Puget Sound.[2] Fort Worden was named after U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John Lorimer Worden, commander of USS Monitor during its famous battle during the American Civil War.[3]
Constructed between 1898 and 1920, Fort Worden was one of the largest Endicott system forts to be built and a rare example of a post built according to the precepts of the Endicott Board on land not already occupied by an older fortification. It was also the only one within sight of a potential (if unlikely) enemy fortification, a British military post on Vancouver Island in Canada.[4] The fort was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976.Fort Worden was an active US Army base from 1902 to 1953. It was purchased by the State of Washington in 1957 to house a juvenile detention facility. In 1971, use was transferred to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and Fort Worden State Park was opened in 1973.[6]
Strategic location
In the 1890s, Admiralty Inlet was considered strategic to the defense of Puget Sound in that three forts -- Fort Worden, Fort Flagler, and Fort Casey -- were built at the entrance with their powerful artillery creating a Triangle of Fire to thwart any invasion attempt by sea. Fort Worden, on the Quimper Peninsula, at the extreme northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, sits on a bluff near Port Townsend, anchoring the northwest side of the triangle. The three posts were designed to prevent a hostile fleet from reaching such targets as the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett.
The forts never fired a hostile shot and the guns were removed during World War I for use in Europe. Subsequently, Fort Worden was used for training a variety of military personnel and for other defense purposes.[7

John's Beachcombing Museum
One Man’s Junk
For 40 years, John has been collecting our garbage off the beach. Here’s where you can visit it.
Drive along Highway 101 on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, just outside of Forks—home of Twilight vampires—and you’ll see a roadside monument, of sorts. The curious slow down and waver: take the road toward the improbable tower or keep to the planned schedule?
I stopped and met John Anderson, a retired plumber and 40-plus-year veteran of beachcombing. Last year, he opened the first North American beachcombing museum. Housed in what was once Anderson’s plumbing workshop, the collection typifies humanity’s peculiar relationship with stuff—from the age of organic pollution to the age of plastic pollution.
There is beauty to be found in the handwritten letters stuffed into glass bottles, in the Japanese glass fishing floats, and in the wavy lines of the ancient fossilized mollusks. There is a ghoulishness too: a candy-colored collection of plastic doll heads; hard hats that once sat on the heads of unknown laborers; the encrusted bristles of the most personal of items—toothbrushes. John’s Beachcombing Museum has it all.
More than anything, Anderson’s museum has an unambiguous record of how humans treat the ocean.
West Coast Artillery Post - 10-inch Gun Firing
Wonder what 10-inch guns look like when they fire? The origins of this historic film are somewhat unknown; however, the gun in the video is nearly identical to the one on display at Fort Casey State Park. It's possible this footage is from Fort Worden in Port Townsend or another west coast artillery post.

Taming Big Sky Country: The History of Montana Transportation from Trails to Interstates
The state’s major routes evolved from ancient Native American trails into four-lane expressways in a little over a century. That story is one of difficult, groundbreaking, and sometimes poor engineering decisions, as well as a desire to make a journey faster, safer, and more comfortable. It all started in 1860, when John Mullan hacked a wagon road over the formidable Rocky Mountains to Fort Benton. It continued until the last section of interstate highway opened to traffic in 1988. Montana Department of Transportation historian Jon Axline charts a road trip through the colorful and inspiring history of trails, roads, and superhighways in Big Sky Country. Mary Surratt
Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt (1820 or May 1823 – July 7, 1865) was an American boarding house owner who was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Sentenced to death, she was hanged, becoming the first white woman executed by the United States federal government. Surratt was the mother of John H. Surratt, Jr., who was later tried but was not convicted of involvement in the assassination.

Battleship Texas, part 3, below deck
Weekend visit to the USS Texas (BB-35) at San Jacinto State Park, 20-30 minutes east of Houston. (From Wikipedia) She is notable for being the oldest remaining dreadnought battleship (I like that name:); for being one of only six remaining ships to have served both World Wars; the first US battleship to launch an aircraft; the first US battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns; the first US battleship to become a permanent museum ship; the first battleship declared to be a US National Historic Landmark.
Hard Hat tours are offered. The last one for 2009 is Nov 21, according to a note one of the tour guides gave me. This gentleman, who was with the air force, was very knowledgeable and seems to enjoy what he was doing and even invited me to join and become a tour guide. He mentioned something about the ships degaussing system and electricals, and I wish I could have taken the hard hat tour and learned some more.
If you do visit the surrounding park, remember to protect yourself from mosquitoes (LOTS of them, at least when I visited in October). And if you drive from Houston to San Jacinto with the windows down, be prepared for some pungent odor.
The ship looks impressive from the outside, especially with all the big guns, but the more interesting part is when one goes below deck to see lots of beds and the type of accommodations or living quarters a sailor's rank gets; officers' lounge and quarters; shops (canteen, soda, ice cream); communications (mail, radio, morse code), facilities (medical, dental, toilet, bath, administrative offices, storage, machine, coil/oil). Inside that ship is a small town.

Bainbridge Island was formed during the last ice age—13,000 to 15,000 years ago—when the 3,000-foot-thick (910 m) Vashon Glacier scraped out the Puget Sound and Hood Canal basins.
Bainbridge Island is located within the cool Puget Sound Basin, east of the Kitsap Peninsula, directly east of the Manette Peninsula and west of the City of Seattle. The island is approximately five miles (8 km) wide and ten miles (16 km) long, encompassing nearly 17,778 acres (71.95 km2), and is one of the larger islands in Puget Sound.
Bainbridge Island shorelines border the main body of Puget Sound, a large protected embayment, Port Orchard Bay, and two high-current tidal passages, Rich Passage and Agate Pass. The island is characterized by an irregular coastline of approximately 53 miles (85 km), with numerous bays and inlets and a significant diversity of other coastal land forms, including spits, bluffs, dunes, lagoons, cuspate forelands, tombolos, tide flats, streams and tidal deltas, islands, and rocky outcrops. The high point is 425-foot (130 m) Toe Jam Hill.
On the Kitsap Peninsula, Bremerton and Poulsbo lie across the Port Orchard channel to the west, and the city of Port Orchard lies across Rich Passage to the south.
The island is quite hilly and is known for its popular Chilly Hilly bicycle ride every February. This ride has been the unofficial start to the bicycling season in the Pacific Northwest since 1975.
Bainbridge Island is connected to the Kitsap Peninsula by the Agate Pass Bridge carrying SR 305 over Agate Passage. The only other public way off the island is by Washington State Ferries service from Winslow in Eagle Harbor to Colman Dock (Pier 52) in Seattle.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 65.02 square miles (168.40 km2), of which, 27.61 square miles (71.51 km2) is land and 37.41 square miles (96.89 km2) is water. No other instrument has witnessed such a dramatic rise to popularity--and precipitous decline--as the accordion. Squeeze This! is the first history of the piano accordion and the first book-length study of the accordion as a uniquely American musical and cultural phenomenon.
Ethnomusicologist and accordion enthusiast Marion Jacobson traces the changing idea of the accordion in the United States and its cultural significance over the course of the twentieth century. From the introduction of elaborately decorated European models imported onto the American vaudeville stage and the instrument's celebration by ethnic musical communities and mainstream audiences alike, to the accordion-infused pop parodies by Weird Al Yankovic, Jacobson considers the accordion's contradictory status as both an outsider instrument and as a major force in popular music in the twentieth century.
Drawing on interviews and archival investigations with instrument builders and retailers, artists and audiences, professionals and amateurs, Squeeze This! explores the piano accordion's role as an instrument of community identity and its varied musical and cultural environments. Jacobson concentrates on six key moments of transition: the Americanization of the piano accordion, originally produced and marketed by sales-savvy Italian immigrants; the transformation of the accordion in the 1920s from an exotic, expensive vaudeville instrument to a mass-marketable product; the emergence of the accordion craze in the 1930s and 1940s, when a highly organized accordion industrial complex cultivated a white, middle-class market; the peak of its popularity in the 1950s, exemplified by Lawrence Welk and Dick Contino; the instrument's marginalization in the 1960s and a brief, ill-fated effort to promote the accordion to teen rock 'n' roll musicians; and the revival beginning in the 1980s of the accordion as a world music instrument and a key component of cabaret and burlesque revivals and pop groups such as alternative experimenters They Might Be Giants and polka rockers Brave Combo.
Wunnerful, wunnerful. . . . A delightful and illuminating surprise.--The Wall Street Journal
Using meticulous research, Jacobson not only touches on how topics as diverse as immigration, movies, war, and feminism have influenced the accordion's popularity, but she also finds time to drop in countless little known pop culture nuggets about great accordionists.--Publishers Weekly
A fascinating cultural history of the most underestimated of instruments.--Booklist
An illuminating and occasionally whimsical account, in keeping with the instrument itself.--Library Journal
Solid. . . . This book holds plenty of interest for those who love accordion music.--Kirkus Reviews
A serious work of musical and cultural history.--Shelf Awareness
An academic resource, a detailed history, and a quirky travelogue. . . . [Time] to roll out the barrel and uncork the champagne: with this book, the lowly squeezebox has begun to get its cultural due.--Maclean's
