Places to see in ( Bordeaux - France ) Porte Cailhau
Facing the Place du Palais, it stands impressively with its multiple conical towers and ornate sculptures. It is thought the name Cailhau comes from the rocks once used to ballast ships in the docks. Standing at height of 35 meters, the Cailhau gate was part of town walls. There is an exhibition that presents the tools and materials that were used to build the city. plus an audio-visual montage created from old film, immerses us in the world of stonemasons.
Porte Cailhau defensive door of the Middle Ages offers a splendid panorama of the quays, the stone bridge and the roofs of the city. She is beautiful, she is tall, slender like a young girlfriend.
Despite her age (imagine, she dates back to 1494), her figure has hardly changed. The Cailhau Gate commemorates the Victory of Charles VIII in Fornoue (Italy). In his own way, this king of France still lives in the tower: his effigy adorns a niche on the river side and a sign signals the visitor too eager to pay attention to the lintel, recalling that a door too low was fatal to him .
35 meters high, the Cailhau Gate was part of the walls of the city. In 1864 we find as tenants a public writer and a salt weigher who will be expelled because of renovation. From its magnificent oak framework, a magnificent panorama opens on the oldest of the bridges of Bordeaux: the stone bridge. In its floors an exhibition presents the tools and materials that were used to build the city. An audio-visual montage made from old films immerses us in the world of stonemasons.

If you follow the river down to your right, you will discover what is known to the locals as Port Cailhau. Once, the main entrance to Bordeaux, this beautiful gate is what is left of Palais de l’Ombrière. It was used as a residence for the dukes of Aquitaine as well as a Parliament during the 15th century.
When the original door was built and used the wharves did not exist, so small boats were used to load and unload commodities through the gate from the ships ported there. The current door was erected between 1493 and 1495, closer to the Garonne. What is interesting about the gate, are the bundles of little fascinating details on it and all the stories that come with them.
For example, take a close look at the side Porte Cailhau overlooking the square (not the river) when you get there. Do you see something that is not quite right? Like slots for weapons that are directed towards the city? Yes, that has a reason. It has something to do with a duchess, the French and the English.

Built in 1495, la Porte Cailhau was once the main gate into Bordeaux, France, and helped defend the city. For a 5 Euro entrance fee, visitors can watch an interesting video on the history of Bordeaux on the first floor, then climb to the top floor through a narrow staircase to discover glorious views of the Garonne river and Bordeaux rooftops. [4K] Bordeaux (2019) France What to See in 1 Day walking Tour
If you're wondering what to See in 1 Day, join us for this 4k virtual tour of Bordeaux on the Garonne River in southwest France. Experience local life on as if you were there. Do let us know your thoughts and tips below, we always welcome them.
Filmed in April, we start our slow tv walking tour in front of the iconic La Grosse Cloche (Great Bell) on Rue Saint-James just off Cours Victor Hugo.
Rue Saint-James is just one of many streets we'll wander where you'll find great coffee shops, restaurants and independent boutiques.
We enter Place Fernand Lafargue, a popular area for nightlife before turning right onto Rue Sainte-Colombe with it's shaded outdoor bars. Turning up Rue du Pas-Saint-Georges, and then Rue du Palais de l'Ombrière, we discover Place du Palais, site of Porte Cailhau - the historic gate with it's incredible facade.
This impressive arch leads us out onto the Quai Richelieu - and the banks of the Garonne River. Here we see the Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge) that connects the East and West sides of the City.
We follow the river, though not as far as the Place de la Bourse and
Le Miroir D'Eau - instead our walk takes us back across the road by the Charles Dickens Pub and along Rue de la Cour des Aides to the
site of Église Saint-Pierre. This church is surrounded by great places to eat, drink and be entertained.
We follow Rue Parlement Saint-Pierre to Place du Parlement with it's much photographed fountain before heading to Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux's mots famous shopping street and often said to be the longest pedestrian street in Europe.
We finish our walk by visiting Place de la Comedie, seeing the Opéra National de Bordeaux on our right, the Intercontinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel on our left (Bordeaux's most famous hotel) and seeing Carrousel Palace 1900, the city's colourful merry-go-round attraction on Allées de Tourny.
A slow walk through the city's sights and history has to be first on the list of the free top 10 things to do in Bordeaux France.
