Business Matters: The value of waterfront
On a beautiful sunny day, it is the allure of the water that draws a crowd to the outdoor patio and bar at Psycho Suzi's in northeast Minneapolis.
The popular restaurant moved to its current spot along the Mississippi River three years ago, securing the coveted waterfront view and business followed.
I think that the river is obviously a huge benefit to what Psycho Suzi's has going, said General Manager Emily O'Brien. We were able to add a second story patio just this past spring. We were able to grow into a larger business and to support the northeast community.
Farther north in Brooklyn Center, it's Shingle Creek that Mayor Tim Willson hopes will someday draw a crowd. Willson envisions sit-down restaurants with outdoor patios being built along the creek at the new Shingle Creek Crossing development.
Places where people can congregate, where community can congregate, said Willson.
Once the site of the former Brookdale Mall, Shingle Creek Crossing is a $100 million retail redevelopment project that's now about 40 percent complete and includes the exposure of around 1,500 feet of Shingle Creek. The development is slated for finish in 2016.
Shingle Creek was paved over in the 1960s for a parking lot at Brookdale, but in the last couple years, part of the creek has been uncovered and brought back into the light with a regional trail system running alongside it.
Ideally, Brooklyn Center would like to see four restaurants located along the creek as part of the Shingle Creek Crossing development.
With all of the development that has happened here, and all of the development that's planned here, this is going to be a destination point, said Willson.
There are still parts of Shingle Creek left to uncover, and as more water flows, the idea is that business and customers will follow.
When the development is complete around 2016, it's estimated it will bring in more than 5,000 new jobs.

Sky high dining on Minneapolis ferris wheel
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WKRC) -- A new restaurant in Minnesota is offering customers a sky-high dining experience.
Betty Danger's Country Club just opened its doors and it's getting lots of attention over its 60-foot ferris wheel, even though owners refer to it as a mechanical tree.
The carriages on the mechanical tree have tables in them so that customers can enjoy a tree top dining experience. Right now, customers can have warm beverages on the ferris wheel. But the restaurant staff says it won't be available to ride until April first.
