2012 - Mount Rainier National Park, Washington, USA
After visiting Mount Saint Helen's, I traveled north to Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state and spent two days hiking the base of the mountain at the foot of the glacier. Days prior, a nice couple told me of a lake that had the reflection of the mountain in the background. Although the park rangers told me that the trails leading to the lake was buried by snow and in some cases 10 feet of snow, I decided to do the hike anyways to see if I could reach Mirror Lake. After much hiking and a long day of vertical climbing, I finally reached my destination. Wow, it was worth it...I loved this park and will surely visit it once again...

Mt. Rainier National Park, located near Tacoma, Washington, is the 4th - oldest national park in the United States and is centered around the mountain after which it is named - Mt. Rainier. The park has been shaped by thousands of years of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and glacial movements, carving the terrain that we see today. Mt. Rainier National Park - Paradise and Narada Falls
Wanting to escape the summer heat and smoky haze from the BC wildfires, on a whim we decided to drive up to Mt. Rainier National Park and camp for the night. Upon reaching the Paradise summit at 5,420' elevation, there was indeed less smoke from the fires, but even here the temperature was in the upper 80's, and it was very humid. Cougar Rock Campground, at 3,200' elevation where we tented for the night was uncomfortably hot, with the daytime temperature near 90! After we set up our tent, we discovered that in our haste we forgot to bring sleeping bags! So, we improvised. A moving blanket that we had stowed in our car kept us cozy for the night on top of our inflatable mattress. As you can see from this video, the scenery was amazing and our brief escape to Mt. Rainier National Park was well worth it!

Mount Rainier National Park is a United States National Park located in southeast Pierce County and northeast Lewis County in Washington state. It was established on March 2, 1899 as the fifth national park in the United States. The park encompasses 236,381 acres (369.35 sq mi; 956.60 km2) including all of Mount Rainier, a 14,411-foot (4,392 m) stratovolcano. The mountain rises abruptly from the surrounding land with elevations in the park ranging from 1,600 feet to over 14,000 feet (490 - 4,300 m). The highest point in the Cascade Range, around it are valleys, waterfalls, subalpine meadows, old-growth forest and more than 25 glaciers. The volcano is often shrouded in clouds that dump enormous amounts of rain and snow on the peak every year and hide it from the crowds that head to the park on weekends.
Mount Rainier is circled by the Wonderland Trail and is covered by several glaciers and snowfields totaling some 35 square miles (91 km2). Carbon Glacier is the largest glacier by volume in the contiguous United States, while Emmons Glacier is the largest glacier by area. About 1.8 million people visit Mount Rainier National Park each year. Mount Rainier is a popular peak for mountaineering with some 10,000 attempts per year with approximately 50% making it to the summit.
The park contains outstanding subalpine meadows and 91,000 acres (37,000 ha) of old growth forests

Mt. Rainier. It's a mountain that soars nearly three miles high and is capped with 26 glaciers. It's a field of wildflowers, an incredible waterfall, a grouse that pops out of a bush right below your feet, the reflection of the mountain from a trail in the still water of a clear mountain lake. It's the adrenaline rush as you head down the ski slopes at high speed or you crest the summit of Mt. Rainier and take in the awesome view. It's a quiet moment in the center of an old growth forest or the silence of a snowy evening. It's being with family around a campfire and laughing until your sides hurt. It's the glow you feel just being outside in a wild, pristine environment.

Clouds over Mt. Rainier & Reflection Lake Time-lapse
Recommended viewing in HD!
Time-lapse taken on 9-1-2013 around noon from the rim of the Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National Park. I started the series just after a very impressive lenticular formation began to break up. Composed from nearly 2000 frames at 24fps. I apologize for the vertical orientation. I don't have a lens in my kit that could pick up the sky and the water together, yet.
