Rome in one day guided tour: Vatican City, Colosseum, Cruise on the Tiber.
With our licensed guide get to know all of Rome’s wonders in a single day, with a rich and fascinating programme lasting 7 hours, including a lunch break. The morning is dedicated to visiting the Vatican Museums. We have access, without queueing, at 8.10 am, before normal public opening hours, after a typical Italian breakfast with cornetto and cappuccino.
We begin at the Belvedere Terrace, to admire the Dome of St Peter Basilica, then we proceed to see the celebrated Laocoön and His Sons and the Belvedere Torso. We stroll through all the Galleries arriving, finally, in the place painted by Michelangelo, where the Conclave elects a new Pope: the Sistine Chapel. After we make our way directly to St Peter’s Basilica to enjoy the grandeur of the world’s most important basilica with its wonders like Michelangelo’s Pieta.
Leaving the Vatican City, we board our boat for a fantastic mini-cruise along the Tiber, with a 3-course roman lunch, and after admiring the city’s beauties from the boat, we disembark at the Isola Tiberina. From here we walk through the Jewish Ghetto before moving leisurely on towards the Roman Forum, where our guide unveils for you the ancient square, the Basilicae, the site of Julius Caesar’s cremation, the Temples and the Triumphal arches. After the Roman Forum we enter the Colosseum to visit it: the world famous landmark.

The Top Ten Things to See in the Vatican Museums
10. The Egyptian Gallery - The collection is so interesting because of the relationship between the Roman Empire and Egypt. As you might know, Mark Antony and Julius Caesar both had relations with Cleopatra. The collection occupies five rooms; plan to spend about 25 minutes in each.
9. Vatican Gardens - Take a stroll past innumerable grottoes, antiquities and world-class landscaping. Did you know there are 100 fountains in the Vatican Gardens? Unlike the Vatican Museums, the gardens are never crowded. One way to access the Vatican Gardens by booking a full-day tour of the Vatican Museums, Gardens and Castle Gandolfo with The Roman Guy.
8. Pinacoteca - The Pinacoteca (Picture Gallery) is one of the more modern sections of the Vatican Museums and is often overlooked. Get up close and personal to 460 works of art, painted by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Leonardo, Guido Reni and Giotto.
7. Pinecone Courtyard - Named after the colossal bronze pinecone that once stood near the Pantheon next to the Temple of Isis, the Pinecone Courtyard was designed by Donato Bramante. From here catch an amazing view of St. Peter's Dome. Sometimes the guards let you spin the giant fractured sphere sculpture in the center of the spacious courtyard.
6. Pio-Clementino Museum - The Vatican's Pio-Clementino Museum is one of Rome's best collections of ancient Greek and Roman statues. In the octagonal Belvedere Courtyard, check out the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoön and His Sons and the Belvedere Torso. Then visit the biggest and oldest bathtubs you’ll ever see. Nero's Bathtub measures an incredible 25 ft in diameter. The red marble it is made from is so rare, there is no way to recreate it today.
5. The Vatican's Main Galleries - The Gallery of the Candelabra, Gallery of the Tapestries and our personal favorite, the Gallery of the Maps. The painted frescoes of maps reveal how Renaissance Italians saw themselves and their surroundings. Predating a unified Italy by nearly 300 years, the Gallery of Maps shows the length and breadth of the peninsula circa 1580.
4. St. Peter's Square - If you're not planning on visiting the Vatican Museums during your trip to Rome, at least come here. This is one of the most famous and breathtaking squares in the world and the largest, open area of Rome. The piazza is encased by two massive arms comprised of four rows of colonnades. As you walk up to the square, it looks like two massive arms welcoming you.
3. Raphael Rooms - Raphael was one of Rome's most famous Renaissance artists who encompassed all the ideals of a Renaissance man. He designed and frescoed multiple rooms connected to the Vatican Museums. Among other masterpieces, visit one of Raphael’s most famous works of art, The School of Athens.
2. St. Peter's Basilica - Don't miss this! St. Peter's Basilica is a massive church filled with artwork from some of the most celebrated artists in history. Enter through a special door and skip the lines to get the most opulent church in the world. Once inside, admire masterpieces that include the La Pieta, Il Baldacchino, La Pieta, the statue of St. Peter and much more.
1. Sistine Chapel - Since the chapel is inside the museums, entrance is included in your Vatican tour. Now that the chapel is restored, every detail and color used in the treasured work of art is visible. Only when you are inside, is it clear why it is one of the Sistine Chapel is one of the most celebrated works of art in Western civilization.
Rome in a Day - Do it Yourself tour ????
A great place to start is the Termini Station, which is easily accessible by Metro. I always book my hotel near Termini for its great flexibility to the Metro and trains throughout Italy and the Fiumicino Airport.
Head South West on via Cavour for less than 5 minutes for the first stop, the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore – a 5th century church with gilded ceiling and majestic works of art. The basilica is the largest catholic church in Rome outside of the Vatican. Typically, a 15 minute stop should to the trick.
Continue South west along via Cavour, following the bend to the right, for about 15 minutes where you will intersect with via Dei Fori Imperiali, turn left towards the Coliseum. With your advanced ticket purchase, you’ll use the short line for pre-purchased tickets – this should take about 5 minutes. When entering the Coliseum, head upwards into the stadium. An hour should be ample time to explore and take photos.
When exiting the Coliseum, head south towards the Arch of Constantine then west up the roadway to the Forum. After entering the gates, the Arch of Titus is straight ahead – celebrating the 1st century victories of the Roman conquest of Jerusalem. Spending about an hour you can walk the grounds of the Forum and ascend the palatine hill for some great views of modern Rome.
From the center of the Forum, exit through the North East exit onto via dei Fori Imperiali and cross the street. Head north west along Trajan’s Forum and past Trajan’s column ending at the Alter of the Fatherland, also known as the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II. This landmark was completed in 1925 in honor of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy.
Now head North on via dei Corso and follow the signs to the Trevi Fountain – there are several places here where you can get some food on the go.
Arriving at the Trevi Fountain, you’ll want to push your way through the crowds to get to the edge of the fountain for the obligatory coin toss over your shoulder – ensuring your future return to Rome. You’ll want to spend about 15 minutes here.
Heading west, follow the side streets to the Pantheon – generally, lines move quickly here and exploring the inside of the Pantheon will take about 20 minutes.
Continue westward towards Piazza Navona, following the signs. In Piazza Navona, there are several fountains and an Egyptian obelisk located in the center – cafes and restaurants surround the perimeter of the square, but be warned, the amazing atmosphere does significantly affect pricing.
Head westward along the winding streets lined with restaurants and then northward (keeping right) towards the Ponte Sant’Angelo. Cross the bridge over the Tiber to the Castel Sant’Angelo.
Keeping left, head West towards St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican City. When entering the main square, keep to the right for the entrance into St. Peter’s. You’ll spend about 30-45 minutes in the Basilica where you’ll be overcome by the grandeur of the architecture and marvel in the incredible works of art, including the Pietà sculpture by Michelangelo.
Heading out of St. Peter’s, head towards the large obelisk in the center of the square and then turn left, or north, up the street, taking another left at the corner of the Wall to the Vatican. Here you will enter the Vatican Museums where you will see well know masterpieces from throughout the centuries, including works by Raphael and the Sistine Chapel paintings by Michelangelo. Although this museum is huge, you can march through it in about an hour and a half.
Heading East, a 25 minute walk back across the Tiber to the Piazza Popolo where you can climb the stairs to the Terrazza del Pincio for a great view of Rome at the edge of the Borghese gardens.
Head South East towards the Spanish Steps where there is plenty of luxury shopping and a great selection of restaurants for dinner. As the night turns darker, head south towards the Trevi Fountain for a completely different experience and an evening Gelato.
