Sea Turtle Inc .... South Padre Island Free or nearly free activities for the whole family!
The work these folks at Sea Turtle Inc do is, just amazing. They adopt sea turtles that can no longer live in the wild and provide them forever homes. They rehab sea turtles that get hurt in the wild. They Hatch egges and release baby sea turtles as well as rehabbed sea turtles back into the wild. Stop in and look around, all they ask for, in return, is a donation to the cause.

Baby Sea Turtle Release, Padre Island Texas
If you haven't done this already, you need to go to a baby sea turtle release on North Padre Island, it needs to be on your bucket list!
Because Texas is home to one of the most endangered turtle species on earth, the National Park Service moves turtle eggs they collect on the beach to a special place where they care for them until they hatch. Then they host a special ceremony when they release them back into the water and you can cheer them on their journey. It's incredible!

Sea Turtles Rescued - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Coastal staff and partners rescue cold-stunned sea turtles along the Texas coast.
Like all reptiles, sea turtles can't regulate their body temperature. When water temps drop rapidly, sea turtles in inshore waters may not have enough time to swim into deeper, warmer waters.

National Seashore Turtle Rescue
This is video footage and pics from a couple of my friends from Port Aransas, TEXAS The footage was captured when they followed some of the trained professionals from the Nat'l Parks Service during their annual Kemp's ridley sea turtle round-up on the beaches of Padre Island.
A special thanks to Wendy Shack, Robert & Nancy Lanham, residents of Port Aransas, Texas for the footage provided.

Every year numbers of Kemp's ridley sea turtles make their way to the long stretches of beautiful beaches along the Gulf of Mexico spanning from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi. The Kemp's ridley is the MOST ENDANGERED of any of the Sea Turtles. There's so much history in, recognizing a major problem, identifying the problem, and finding a solution to preserve this beautiful creature. In the 1960's some of the first records of this turtle showed an estimated 40,000 Kemp's ridley turtles hitting the beaches in Mexico (Rancho Nuevo). Within just a couple of years, no regulation and illegal harvesting of the eggs from the newly laid nests, the populations were devastated. You'll find the link below so that you can read more on this amazing outreach and recovery program, and the Kemp's ridley sea turtle...

South Padre 2011 Travelogue #6: Sea Turtle Inc.
This captures my visit to South Padre's Sea Turtle Inc., a rescue endeavor for injured and endangered sea turtles. I love this place. The turtles are all so cute, and it's so sad how so many of them have been injured by boating accidents and fishing nets, etc, because of humans.

Hatchling Release at Padre Is. National Seashore
Dr. Donna Shaver and her staff and volunteers work to protect the endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle through research, egg collection and incubation, and public outreach. Each summer they invite the public to witness the release of hatchling clutches to the Gulf of Mexico. Their work has resulted in the repopulation of the Texas coast by Kemp's Ridley turtles, with 4 consecutive years of record nesting.
