How to Pick an Italian Wine
Watch more Wine Drinking & Education videos:
Italians are famous for being fine artists, but there's more to choosing a fine Italian wine than just looking at the art on the label. Buy wisely with these tips.
Step 1: Look for wine from popular regions
Look for wine from the most popular of the 20 different wine regions in Italy. The Northern Italian region of Tuscany is famous for its popular Chianti, Chianti Classico, and Brunello di Montalcino -- red wines made from the Sangiovese grape.
Tip
A general rule is to pair red wine with red meat and white wine with fish and white meat, but it's not written in stone. Lighter-bodied reds can also pair with white meat.
Step 2: Try wines from Piedmont
Try wines from Piedmont. Two excellent dry red wines it produces are Barbaresco and Barolo made from the Nebbiolo grape; Asti Spumante also hails from this region in Northwestern Italy.
Step 3: Find wines from Veneto
Seek out wine from Veneto, home to Venice in Northern Italy, for light and simple varietals. White wines include Soave and Prosecco, a sparkling, semi-sweet wine made from the Prosecco grape; Valpolicella and Bardolino are two of its light, red wines.
Step 4: Choose wine from southern Italy
Sample wine from southern Italy, such as Taurasi, a full-bodied red made from the regional grape, Aglianico. Wines from southern Italy are generally thought of as mediocre, resulting in government incentives for improving quality.
Step 5: Know wine classification regulations
Know the Italian government's wine classification regulations. A wine labeled DOCG meets the strictest regulations; DOC is the next strictest classification; IGT is classified as excellent value for the cost; and VDT or table wine is the lowest classification.
Tip
DOCG classification doesn't automatically mean a better-tasting wine, but ensures a higher level of quality.
Step 6: Pick a Super Tuscan
Pick a Super Tuscan. Developed by winemakers in the late 1970s in Tuscany, Super Tuscans are a blend of Sangiovese and French grapes. They are considered some of Italy's best wines.
Did You Know?
The DOC laws regulating wine in Italy were enacted in 1963.

Wine tasting & food tour Rome’s Rooftops
A wine and food tasting on some of the most beautiful rooftops overlooking the Eternal City. What better way to spend an evening in Rome?
This amazing new tour by Eden Walks may be the best tasting experience out there right now – a sampling of 5 different Italian wines in the most exclusive, well-known establishments in Rome. Each carefully selected to create a truly unique experience that will make for the most memorable evening. And if you could possibly want for more – delicious food accompaniments for each glass of the good stuff.
You will be introduced to an array of wines, ranging in complexity from light to full-bodied, while learning the history behind each. Your guide will even share the secrets and scandals behind the beautiful places that become the backdrop of your evening.
Understand the difference between Montepulciano di Abruzzo from 1700 compared to other wines, discover Chianti’s 300-year old history and become acquainted with the unknown treasure that is Morellino di Scansano. All while savoring the many eatables typical of Rome. Learn how Roman cuisine has evolved, yet still managed to hold on to their traditions these last 2,000 years.
This wonderful wine pairing begins on Borromini Terrace where you will sip on an exquisite glass of Morellino di Scansano, a delicious but lesser-known DOCG red from the Tuscany region. And the perfect complement to that- a wonderful selection of ricotta and mozzarella cheese, toasted bread, and olive oil from nearby Sabina (part of the Lazio region).
Your education continues to the Relais Hotel Rooftop. Nibble on some more delicious cheese and salami as you enjoy your second glass – a Montepulciano, the popular and extremely tasty medium-bodied red synonymous with the Abruzzo region.
Then sample the two most famous pastas in Rome – Cacio e Pepe and Amatriciana, appropriately paired with a glass of Chianti. It’s no wonder that this earthy, rustic red is the most recognized Italian wine in the world.

Italian Wine - Poderi Boscarelli - Tasting Vino Nobile and Nocio - by Stile Italia Tv
With Luca De Ferrari, tasting Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Vino Nobile Riserva and Nocio.
The most important label-and the most ancient too- is the
VINO NOBILE D.O.C.G is the standard vino Nobile ,produced inabout 50.000 bts whit a traditional blend we use by the 60's: 85% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo, Mammolo and Colorino, aged for 24 months in oak before the bottling.
VINO NOBILE RISERVA D.O.C.G is a blend of 90% sangiovese and 10% merlot ,10.000 bts mixing the elegance and the full-bodied, aged for three years in oak before the bottling
NOCIO DEI BOSCARELLI D.O.C.G is a special selection made in a particular place : a cru'. The grapes, 100% Sangiovese, are selected in a parcel of three hectares named: Vigna del Nocio (Vineyard of the Walnut tree ndr), we produce about 6.000 bts only in the best vintages .
Canalicchio Di Sopra Brunello 2007 Offering
The wine with top billing in Tuscany is for the last half of century is Brunello Di Montalcino, a DOCG from a fortress town south of Siena with reds of legendary power and longevity that have commanded lofty prices. The wines of this world renowned region of Tuscany were conceived by the Biondi Santi family a century ago, today Brunello di Montalcino is produced under scores of labels, representing small farms, established estates and even international corporations. Brunello production averages less than 2 million bottles (166 thousand cases), but producers also make the DOC, of Rosso di Montalcino (usually the grapes produced from the younger vines and the fruit that is not of high enough quality to go into the Brunello) and many make a sweet wine from the Moscato grape.
Brunello is Montalcino is one of the hottest topics in the world of Italian wine today. With wine writers like The Wine Spectator's James Suckling and The Wine Advocate's Antonio Galloni. and International Wine Cellar's Stephen Tanzer calling the newly released 2004 vintage from Montalcino One of The Greatest Vintage Ever, many collectors and wine enthusiasts alike have been scrambling to pick up the best wines from this stellar vintage. The paradox here is that these wines are years away from showing their grandeur, when a customer wants a recommendation for a wine to take home tonight and drink, young Brunello is rarely comes to mind. However if you would like a taste of the wines of this elite red wine producing region, Brunello's baby brother Rossi Di Montalcino has been one of the hottest wines in its price category in the store this year. In 1984 the Junior DOC of Rosso Di Montalcino was established. This younger brother of Brunello was brought about because in lower than average quality years they could bottle the wine with less time in oak therefore allowing the wine to have a more international style and more mass appeal, while still maintaining its distinctive Brunello character. Young and fresh, this wine unlike its older sibling in that it is ready to drink upon release.
2007 Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino
Price: $73.25
Quantity in Stock: 24
Very pretty nose with classic black spice, tar and fresh porcini mushroom, fine herbs, licorice spice and wild strawberry fruit very complex array of aromas. Chunky fruity wines on the palate with lots of spice and nuance to the wild berry fruit and fine tannins showing up on the finish, classic earth and mineral through the finish with licorice spice and a long well balanced finish, this wine needs some time still to come together but has a long finish that has layers of spice and earth.
Finish 50+ Most Excellent
2006 Canalicchio Di Sopra Riserva Brunello Di Montalcino
Price: $135.00
Quantity in Stock: 12
(94 Points) The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a big, broad-shouldered wine endowed with tremendous depth and richness. Black cherries, licorice, new leather and tobacco wrap around the palate in this dramatic, sweeping Brunello. Despite the wine's size, there is plenty of nuance and detail. The 2006 needed all of its 40 months in cask. This is a fabulous effort. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. Wine Advocate #200

Baricci e Montalcino Chapter 1 (Winemaker Stories)
Federico from Baricci speaks to us about his soil, climate and vineyards in the cru of Montosoli in Montacino.
it's a clay soil but this is a mid
composition with its very rocky soil and
this is a this soil has marine origin in
fact we found a lot of marine fossils
here in the on our vineyards and we can
prove this and also you know in our
wines you find this kind of the sort of
mineralogy these wines are really
drinkable wines invites you to you know
the salivation so these are our White's
I don't used to be sweet or you know
that kind of bodied the wines that are
more typical in the in the southern part
of Montesinos thanks also to the this
position here we have the motor Chino
Gila and the southern part rest protect
us from the hot from the heat coming
from South with directly received fresh
and humid air from north so these
guarantees as good-good difference
between day and night in terms of
temperature and humidity percent and
usually here rights are as lower than
than the southern part in fact here also
harvest is made a couple of weeks later
than the the warm as the parts of
Montesinos our our vineyards are planted
in north south direction this Venus are
not planted by casually in this way
because this way the eastern part of the
row recede directly received the Sun of
the morning and the western part is the
this the Sun of the afternoon and during
a as you can see now during the warmest
period of of the day so between midday
and two o'clock Sun is just heating at
the top and it doesn't keep directly the
the grapes and you know this is very
good and as you can see we use to select
more leaves in the eastern part than the
Western one so everything is made just
like you know in a regional way because
the gentle son of the morning doesn't
keep too much the Grayson but the
afternoon I can make a big damages so
that's why we used to make a different
selection for in between the two
different rows each grade for us must
grow free from any kind of you know from
any leaves and must grow free from the
iron line because then when the great
grows can you know can can break and
make a mold so this is the good and
positive thing to have only five
hectares
all in this slope of the hill we can
have the maximum check only five
hectares means to have the
hundred-percent of control of everything
and to plan in a very additional way of
working on the vineyard

2004 Italian Brunello’s are Red Hot, Today Gary Tal...
Wine Spectator scores the 2004 Brunello’ds a 92-97 as a vintage and Wine Advocate scores Tuscany a 96 but Antonio Galloni says “There is absolutely no reason to get worked up about 2004 Brunello and commit capital without tasting the wines first.” So today Gary Vaynerchuk will try the 1st two that have come in!
Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino
Wine critic Anthony Gismondi recently attended the annual Lifford Grand Tasting at the beautifully renovated Stanley Park Pavilion near the park’s famed Rose Garden in Vancouver British Columbia.
He selected 18 wines, one from each producer at the tasting, who hailed from far away - South America, Australia, Europe, and just down the coast - Oregon and California. Gismondi and his team asked them to tell British Columbians the story behind the wine in about 30 seconds.
It proved to be a very entertaining afternoon and we captured it all on video. We used this opportunity to review the wines as well and launch our new points seals and the concept of identifying the very best wines at all price points with a Real Wine designation. We'll be launching an article on GOW in the coming days explaining what the real wine concept is all about ,when we launch the system live in our regular tasting notes.
We've included the price and CSPC number so you can find or order the wines through your local private wine shop, or, if you are in Canada, you might find some of them in government stores.
Anthony Gismondi has been providing useful wine tasting notes for over 30 years. You can find them, and interesting articles about wine and the people who make them, here:

Piancornello, Rosso Di Montalcino - Rincon Valley Wine & Craft Beer, Santa Rosa, CA
Rosso Di Montalcino, Piancornello
Piancornello is a small, family run winery from the Tuscan mountaintop village of Montalcino. The winery has scored big in Wine Spectator with their Brunello. This offering has much of the flavor at half the price. This delicious wine is one of the best buys on Sangiovese you will find in the marketplace.
The estate vineyard at Piancornello was bought by the Pieri Family in 1950. The fruit was sold to other Montalcino producers until they began making their own wine starting with the 1990 vintage. Silvana Pieri owns the estate and her son Claudio Monaci is the winemaker.
Piancornello takes its name from the hamlet just south of Montalcino where the winery is located. Because of the warm climate, this is considered one of the finest areas of Brunello. The vineyards are located on moderately sloped hills with rocky, volcanic soils and southern exposures. The clones at Piancornello were chosen carefully in order to have low yields and looser bunches. A modern winemaking facility has been built in front of the old cellar. The new facility is humidity controlled with ample provisions for the various barriques and traditional 30 hectolitre barrels employed by the winery.
This wine has hints of barnyard, bright red currant and rhubarb, with good acidity and tannins on the finish. It features the silkiness and pliancy of its perfumed red fruit. It possesses wonderful freshness and vibrancy as well as a totally harmonious personality.
We are pouring a variety of wines from our tasting bar each day. As the business grows so will the number of wines we will have available. Eventually we hope to have at least 15-20 wines available at any time.
Rincon Valley Wine & Craft Beer offers inexpensive tastings of many of our wines and beers so you can try before you buy. Enjoy a flight of four ounce pours to compare beers or wines and then you can buy what you know you really like! There will always be a variety of great wines and craft beers to taste.
From local to international wines and beers, we have hand-selected a wonderful variety for you to choose from in all price ranges for your tastes. Our craft beer selection includes some of your favorites including a great choice of Belgian brews.
Come in and relax and enjoy discovering something new or have an old favorite. We bring the passion and knowledge of brewers and winemakers to you.

Montalcino e Brunello secondo Adamo (Winemaker Videos)
Adamo, cellar man of Contrucci, shares his passion and thoughts with us about Brunello and Montalcino.
I started to work in the cellar that I was 15 years old (Montalcino and Montepulciano according to Adamo)
so in 1953
so with my Mentor I spent 34 years together
so what happend...
he taught me how to make a natural wine
because you can make wine in two ways:
in the vineyard and in the cellar
ours is a wine made in the vineyards
the wine made in the vineyards is coming from super selected grapes in the vineyards
while the one made in the cellar is the one where you have the chemist and the enologist with the white lab coat...
not with this one
where you have those trucks full of grapes
where you have white , red, green and yellow grapes
they make a wine that has to be the same every year
same color, same perfume, same taste, same alcohol content every year
while ours changes based on vintages
in the sense that the type of wine is the same style here
because we still produce the Nobile with the grapes planted by the Etruscans
this means 80% of Prugnolo Gentile
that is a clone of Sangiovese
it is part of the same family but the grape is slightly oval, like a plum (prugna)
then we have 15% of Canaiolo Nero
that gives color and elegance to the wine
then we have another really important grape variety: Mammolo, that gives to the wine the aroma, the bouquet
A few years ago the minister of Agriculture gave to the consortiums the opportunity to add up to 10% of international grape varieties to Chianti, Brunello and Nobile
like Cabernet, Merlot or Shyraz
so the Consortium of Montepulciano accepted it
