How alligators survived freezing temperatures in North Carolina
In a rarely seen occurrence, video released on Monday (January 8) showed alligators trying to stay alive in a frozen North Carolina pond by sticking their snouts through the ice.
Footage taken by an NBC affiliate station showed a handful of the cold-blooded reptiles at the Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach breathing through the gaps created with their snouts in a pond frozen by a brutal cold spell ravaging the U.S.
The reptiles cannot generate their own body heat. Experts say once the alligators are able to breathe through the ice, they fall into a state of hibernation known as brumation by lowering their body temperatures and metabolism. Once it becomes warm and the ice melts, the creatures will thermoregulate their body temperatures to their regular state.
Bone-chilling arctic air has created dangerous conditions for a large portion of the U.S. and has resulted in at least 18 deaths since the beginning of the new year, including four in North Carolina traffic accidents and three in Texas.

Frigid winter temperatures have created an unusual sighting at a swamp in North Carolina: Alligators frozen in the water with their noses above ice.
The Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., posted a video on Facebook showing the gators' behavior.
Eighteen American alligators are thinking ahead as they poke their noses up through the ice, said a narrator during the video, which has since garnered more than 44,000 views.
According to the swamp park, the alligators are entering brumation, a process similar to hibernation where the animals' metabolism slows down and they enter a lethargic state. Brumation kicks in when the water is too cold for them to remain active, said the park.

Alligators freeze in place in North Carolina swamp, noses above surface
Video posted to YouTube shows alligators surviving frigid North Carolina waters by keeping their nostrils above the surface.
The Shallotte River Park Swamp posted a video to YouTube recently to show how the reptiles survive is such cold temperatures.
The video shows several alligators in the slushy, icy water with their nostrils in the air at the Ocean Isle Beach park.
George Howard, the manager of the park, told the Associated Press that 18 of the park’s American alligators froze in place Monday and remained like that into Tuesday.
The rescued alligators are fine – they’re cold-blooded and can regulate their own body temperature. They’re in a state called brumation, which is similar to hibernation.
Experts say the alligators instinctively know when water they’re in is about to freeze, so they stick out their noses at the right time to breathe.
The temperature at Ocean Isle Beach will see lows in the mid-30s early Friday morning and reach a high of around 50 degrees.

We wondered why so many people came from so far to eat at San Jose’s Mexican in Shallotte North Carolina. Well we find out. We got their millionaire margarita which had the feel of a skinny margarita, not sugary but plenty of citrus. The guacamole was loaded with chunks of avocado in perfectly spiced. We dove into two of their fajitas, the mixed fajita and fajita texana. Both we recommend. The hit of the night was the Palaza Delmar which was loaded with fish and veggies. You could also get a good lunch menu here. And it’s a great spot to stop off at the bar and watch a game. Here’s the website
