Colonial Heritage Buildings in Kolkata
Kolkata presents an interesting cultural melange, with the grandeur of the British colonial architecture balancing the modern architectural trends in a soothing manner today. Calcutta being the first capital of British India before it was shifted to Delhi, many large investments were made here, to adorn the city in a manner that would suit the stature of an imperial capital. Kolkata’s colonial heritage buildings indeed offer a rich experience for architectural lovers, history buffs and inquisitive tourists, with their majestic structures and historical as well as modern significance. They are in fact reminiscent of the historical grandeur of the imperialists, built and maintained at the cost of the natives. However, their presence in modern Indian cities reflects the fact that the reigns are back in our own hands, and we can now indulge in a holistic development that shall benefit everyone.

Making Tracks: Javanese Narrow Gauge Railway in 1994
This is a clip of a British TV show Making Tracks. The show making coverage about railway around the world, and in this episode we are seeing the narrow gauge sugarcane trains in Java, Indonesia, as seen as in 1994.
We can see varieties of sugar mills, type of locomotives, complete with commentary comments from the expert: Mr. Rob Dickinson. He has explored Indonesian railway since 1970s, and of course he as wealthy knowledge about steam locomotives in Indonesia.
Sugar mills shown in this clip are: Gempol, Pangka, Sragi, Gondang Baru, Kebonagung, Pagottan, Semboro, Kanigoro, Rejosari, Trangkil, Pakis Baru, Sumberharjo, and Sindanglaut. All of them still operated their steam locomotives at the time when this video clip was made.
Fast forward to present day (2016) and things have changed completely. Almost all of them no longer operate their steam locomotives, or even having railway network at all! Some sugar mills have become history too as they have closed down.
Gempol sugar mill have gone, being closed down in 1998. All sugar mills have ceased operating their steam locos, except for fireless loco in Semboro. And only Semboro too still operating their field lines.
The Hunslet-built steam loco at Trangkil has since been repatriated back to England, while the other steam locos shown in the video are mostly derelict in the shed.
As for Mr. Rob Dickinson, the large scale cessation of steam locomotives in 2015 have left him totally frustrated, and since then he began to forsake steam locomotives in Indonesia, and shifted his attention to somewhere else.

Calcutta Welcomes The Queen - 1961
Calcutta is a city of millions, and, long before the royal visit, masses of people were giving the police a busy time, as they crowded the streets. Meanwhile, a trip aboard a river-steamer was Her Majesty's last engagement in East Pakistan. The Queen and Prince Philip had driven out from Dacca to the Adamjee jute mills, and were returning this way. The great Steelworks at Durgapur was first on the list of engagements for the return to India. When Her Majesty came to be shown over the plant, she saw one of Britain's largest overseas contracts. It's not yet completed, but it's already in operation. British technical supervision, together with India technicians and workers co-operated in building it. From Durgapur to Calcutta, and a multitudinous welcome from the people of the city. The Queen was accompanied by Miss Naidu (Governor of West Bengal) on this memorable drive.

As it was in the Beginning - Part 1
1963 was something of a shock for railway enthusiasts. Beeching had made his fateful prognosis on the nation's railways and it looked like steam would soon be gone forever. However, there were still a few chinks of light as those enthusiasts started to form what would become the great preservation movement of today whilst others realised that the nostalgia for steam could provide a great attraction alongside other historic sites. Amongst the latter was Bicton House near Budleigh Salterton in East Devon which boasted some famous botanical gardens. That summer an 18 gauge narrow gauge steam railway was opened running around the gardens, employing an industrial steam locomotive from the famous Royal Arsenal at Woolwich to haul passenger coaches built on the frames of old goods wagons. Here we see no 1 Woolwich - as well as some contemporary road vehicles arriving here!
