Alessia Smile And Food, about me
smileandfood.com - sicilian cooking lesson - home foood - chef at home - welcome to tourists - alessia@smileandfood.com
Smile and Food is the project of a young Sicilian brought up watching her grandmother, previously a resident of Tripoli, passionate about Mediterranean cooking. She prepared lunches and dinners for her large family which had a definite Arabic flavour to them.
Here I am, I'm Alessia. I'm 36 and I'd like to be your Smile Food coach for a day.
If you are on holiday in Sicily, do you know the best way to get to know Siracusa and its people: through my eyes, at my home and in my kitchen. How?
By taking you to see our famous local open air market with its fragrances and aromas, characteristics and colours. I'll take you around the market stalls to discover the wide choice in fish, fruit, spices, herbs, and vegetables. You'll get to taste our local products just as I do every time before I buy anything to cook for my family.
You'll meet Carmelo who has a stall selling Sicilian cheeses and salamis and we'll make our choice together for what we would like to eat. Then we'll move onto Gerardo, my preferred fishmonger, to buy the fish we need for the dish we will be preparing together. Before, going home we'll stop by Franco to taste his delicious bread and biscuits which your children will love.
Talking of children, I have two. My eldest, Manfredi, who will be 5 in October, is already a budding chef. Your children could as well if you instill enthusiasm for cooking.
Let's get down to basics: cooking. If you want to really understand us Sicilians and to feel Sicilian just for a day, then there's no better experience than learning how to cook our dishes. Not by following the cold and distant instructions from a web site or blog, but by cooking with a real Sicilian like me. For us, every recipe is our recipe: my Grandmother Maria's, my Aunt Concetta's; in other words family recipes.
After our visit to the market then its everybody back to my house as my guests. There, on the Grand Port of Siracusa, with our acquisitions brought home, we'll cook our meal and then all sit down at table, laughing and joking about the mishaps and experiences in cooking these dishes. Just like the everyday experience of our Sicilian housewives.
Let me assure you, you'll go home with a new soul: you'll be a bit more Sicilian, inside and out. Your friends will ask you What on earth did you do on holiday to make you so different? You'll reply that you can never truly understand the Sicilian experience without having spent a day going to the market and then preparing your meal in the company of your smile food coach Alessia, the Sicilian!

Ep5 Rustic Sicilian Pizza in Modica, Sicily, Italy
During our stay in Sicily, we ate a lot (x1000) of pizzas at Salvo's pizzeria. We like pizzas but never imagined eating that many, day-in and day-out. Why was the pizza so addictive and so good?
In one word, it's the simplicity... but done very well. Salvo's pizzeria Convivio Food Devotion uses local organic Sicilian ingredients which includes Sicilian flour, local vegetables, meat, local cheese and tomatoes. Simple, right?
Pizza’s one of the easiest things to make in a kitchen but wow, the Convivio pizzas blew us away… EVERY SINGLE TIME we ate their pizzas and let me tell you, we ate there a lot!
Be warned, you’re gonna get pizza envy watching this one!

Alberto and Letizia are Italian cheese producers: they run a small family-operated fromagerie. From farm to plate, it's artisan cheese-making at its best. See everything from the cows getting milked, the rennet added to fresh milk, all the way to the whey-oozing fresh cheese getting eaten.

Sicily Catania at Night / IS IT SAFE - Vlog 1
Streets and monuments in Catania at night while I walk around the narrow dark street.
So I traveled from the UK and arrived late in Catania and went for a night walk to see the sights by moon light. It seemed relatively safe apart from some of the dark narrow alleyways and streets with graffiti on the walls on roads away from the centre.
I went to Piazza Duom, saw the cathedral, the University Piazza and the main road that runs through the city as well as a few others.

SICILIAN COOKING CLASS WITH BILL GENOVA
This video was created because of stories by the following two people. My cousin Don Genova who is a food writer, broadcaster in B.C. He is currently in Sicily on a press junket and has been sending me back material about his trip. One story was in a cooking class. Another friend Martyn Burke sent me a New York Times story with a video about a Sicilian cooking Class. Both stories were of modern commercial Sicilian cooking. Because of these stories I dug out a Sicilian Cooking Class I did a few years ago that you might enjoy. This was done with one of the Grandmothers of Vita in her home. Vita is the town where my grandparents came from. This is the authentic Sicilian food that is eaten every day. Well worth taking a cooking lesson to be able to create and enjoy.
The best fish market in Trapani, Sicily forever :-)
Is it for real or am I dreaming? I can experience the overwhelming beauty of Sicilian fish ...and that of local fishermen as well :-)
When visiting local places or going abroad, I want not only to take but also to bring some joy. I hope positive vibes are flowing from the video and you can touch some of the magic of Trapani by watching it :-)

Thousands of new graduates get their degrees in Syracuse
Graduation day is an emotional one for students filled with smiles, happiness and relief. Thousands of students from both Syracuse University and SUNY ESF received their degrees today in a dual ceremony.
Celebrating 90 years at the Como Restaurant
Frank Antonacci opened the Como Restaurant on Pine Avenue in Niagara Falls in 1927. His Grandson, Dominic Colucci is the third generation of his family to keep the tradition going. He says we have had loyal customers from Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Canada. They just celebrated their 90th anniversary last year and they are not resting on their laurels. While the loyal customers have clamored to the Como for decades they have a number of loyal employees too. 84-year-old Gino, the on site butcher has put in 40 years and says with a smile and a twinkle I'm too old to go anywhere. By the numbers, the Como estimates that they have made 9 million meatballs since 1927 and two million one hundred gallons of sauce. Lots of celebrities have fancied the Como, and their autographed photos are hanging in the lobby including Chuck Norris, Frank Sinatra and our own Keith Radford. Dominic's son, Dominic the third has already jumped into the business and that makes the fourth generation to keep the tradition going. His dad says you don't see too many businesses exist for four generations.
