AB Tech Construction
Buncombe County has taken over construction of AB Tech's $50 million expansion project. The move comes after county staff expressed concerns over the project's tax status.
The county is using tax free bonds to fund construction of the new allied health building. But the school's plan to include an auditorium and kitchen in the building raised red flags over whether that qualified under federal tax exempt rules.
County Manager Wanda Greene says she and staff are now reviewing AB Tech's alternate plans. She says the project will remain on hold until after a bill moves through the state legislature transferring all future AB Tech construction to the county's control.
