Upon gaining U.S. independence from Great Britain, it continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture. Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States
Boston is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; Boston also serves as county seat of the state's Suffolk County. The largest city in New England, the city proper, covering 48 square miles (125 square km), had an estimated population of 626,000 in 2011, making it the 21st largest city in the United States. The city is the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country. Greater Boston as a commuting region is home to 7.6 million people, making it the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States. One of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Through land reclamation and municipal annexation, Boston has expanded beyond the original peninsula. After the coming of American independence the city became an important port and manufacturing center, and a center of education and culture as well. Its rich history helps attract many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone attracting over 20 million visitors. Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public school (1635), and first subway system (1897). The area's many colleges and universities make Boston an international center of higher education and medicine, and the city is considered highly innovative for a variety of reasons. Boston's economic base also includes finance, professional and business services, and government activities. The city has one of the highest costs of living in the United States, though it remains high on world livability rankings. Boston has an area of 89.6 square miles (232.1 km2) 48.4 square miles (125.4 km2) (54.0%) of land and 41.2 square miles (106.7 km2) (46.0%) of water and is the country's third most densely populated city that is not a part of a larger city's metropolitan area. This is largely attributable to the rarity of annexation by New England towns. The city's official elevation, as measured at Logan International Airport, is 19 ft (5.8 m) above sea level. The highest point in Boston is Bellevue Hill at 330 feet (100 m) above sea level, and the lowest point is at sea level. Situated near the Atlantic Ocean, Boston is the only state capital in the contiguous United States with an ocean coastline. Boston is surrounded by the Greater Boston region and is contiguously bordered by the cities and towns of Winthrop, Revere, Chelsea, Everett, Somerville, Newton, Brookline, Needham, Dedham, Canton, Milton, and Quincy. The Charles River separates Boston from Cambridge and Watertown, and the mass of Boston from its own Charlestown neighborhood. To the east lie Boston Harbor and the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (which includes part of the city's territory, specifically Calf Island, Gallops Island, Great Brewster Island, Green Island, Little Brewster Island, Little Calf Island, Long Island, Lovells Island, Middle Brewster Island, Nixes Mate, Outer Brewster Island, Rainsford Island, Shag Rocks, Spectacle Island, The Graves, and Thompson Island). The Neponset River forms the boundary between Boston's southern neighborhoods and the city of Quincy and the town of Milton. The Mystic River separates Charlestown from Chelsea and Everett, and Chelsea Creek and Boston Harbor separate East Boston from Boston proper. The city's water supply, from the Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs to the west, is one of the very few in the country so pure as to satisfy federal quality standards without filtration. Boston is sometimes called a city of neighborhoods because of the profusion of diverse subsections; there are 21 officially designated neighborhoods. More than two-thirds of inner Boston's modern land area did not exist when the city was founded, but was made by filling over the centuries, notably with earth from the leveling or lowering of Boston's three original hills (the Trimountain, after which Tremont Street is named), and with gravel brought by train from Needham to fill the Back Bay. Downtown and its immediate surroundings consists largely of low-rise (often Federal style and Greek Revival) masonry buildings, interspersed with modern highrises, notably in the Financial District, Government Center, and South Boston. Back Bay includes many prominent landmarks, such as the Boston Public Library, Christian Science Center, Copley Square, Newbury Street, and New England's two tallest buildings the John Hancock Tower and the Prudential Center.

Boston 4K - Seaport District - Driving Downtown
Saturday afternoon drive around the Seaport District, orSouth Boston Waterfront.
The new home to General Electric (GE) corporate headquarters and global athletic footwear and apparel company Reebok. In a massive renaissance, the area has seen an enormous construction boom in recent years; considered the hottest, fastest-growing real estate market in the country. A two-bedroom apartment can rent for more than $5,000 per month and the purchase cost would be more than $2 million in 2018.
Waterfront Redevelopment
This section of South Boston north has been targeted for massive redevelopment. The Fallon Company is currently developing Boston’s Fan Pier, one of the most sought-after waterfront sites in the United States, and a catalyst for the revitalization of South Boston’s waterfront. Fan Pier is a nine-acre, 21 city block site which consisted largely of underutilized parking lots when the Fallon Company purchased it for $115 million in 2005. Today, it is a neighborhood consisting of four commercial towers – One Marina Park Drive, 11 Fan Pier Boulevard, 50 Northern Avenue, and 100 Northern Avenue – and a luxury condominium tower Twenty Two Liberty. A second residential building, Fifty Liberty, is currently under construction. Two more high-rise towers are planned. When complete in 2020, the $4 billion Fan Pier project will encompass three million square feet of commercial and residential real estate, public, civic and cultural space, including two parks and a 6-acre marina.
According to the Boston Seaport website, the Seaport/South Boston Waterfront has 78 restaurants, 8 hotels, and continues to grow. The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center straddles D Street. The Seaport Hotel and Seaport World Trade Center is located on Commonwealth Pier. A new home for the Institute of Contemporary Art hangs over Boston Harbor just north of Northern Avenue. The Society of Arts and Crafts, New England’s oldest craft-focused nonprofit is situated closeby on Pier 4. The John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse is on Fan Pier. The South Boston Waterfront, or The Seaport, in a massive renaissance, has exploded in recent years; considered the hottest, fastest-growing real estate market in the country, the Waterfront has seen an enormous construction boom. The Innovation District, as ex-mayor Tom Menino termed it, is now home to tens of new office towers, residential buildings, and innovation labs either proposed or under construction. As of September 2010, the Seaport Square project was also under planning. It was expected to cost $3 billion and replace parking lots between the federal courthouse and convention center with a 6,300,000-square-foot (590,000 m2) mixed-use development. Construction was expected to begin in 2011.
Due to the increase in nightlife in the neighborhood, on-street parking for residents has become increasingly scarce. In response, city officials are launching a 90-day pilot program that will expand resident only parking to seven days a week, from four.
On January 13, 2016, it was announced that GE will be moving its corporate headquarters from Fairfield, Connecticut to the South Boston Waterfront. GE ranks eighth on the Fortune 500 and will become the largest publicly traded company based in Massachusetts.
According to the Boston Globe, a two-bedroom apartment in the Seaport area can rent for more than $5,000 per month and the purchase cost would be more than $2 million in 2018.
In November 2016, the global athletic footwear and apparel company Reebok announced they would be moving their headquarters from the Boston suburb of Canton to the innovation and design building in the seaport district of South Boston. The reasons for the move, according to the company, is to be located in an urban environment that is more desirable to millennial workers and to “clarify the roles” of United States offices. The move was completed in the fall of 2018.
South Boston is a densely populated neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. South Boston, most popularly known as Southie, was once a predominantly working class Irish Catholic community, but has become increasingly desirable among young professionals. South Boston has undergone gentrification, and consequently, its real estate market has seen property values join the highest in the city.

A World With No Skies Teaser
A Michael Yebba Film
A World With No Skies, is a documentary film about Bostons, mainly South Boston's, ongoing heroin epidemic..
South Boston is a densely populated neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. One of the oldest, most historic neighborhoods in the United States, South Boston is more commonly known as Southie.
During the 1970's, South Boston received national attention for its opposition to court-mandated school desegregation, which involved busing students to different neighborhood schools. There were a number of protests that turned severely violent, some resulting in deaths. During that time, Southie became known as one of the most racist neighborhoods in the United States, a reputation that to this day, many outsiders attach to the city.
In the years following the busing controversy, the name Southie would become world famous, mainly due to the 14 year FBI manhunt of none other than James Whitey Bulger and his Winter Hill Gang. For decades to come, the term Southie would be synonymous with drugs, violence and the influence that Whitey had over the South Boston Community, preying on young teenagers who could easily be sucked into the glamorous life of fast money, but it didn't stop there.
Unlike most impoverished neighborhoods across the United States, Southie was made of mainly working-class, Irish Americans, with a small population of Polish, Lithuanian and Italians. It is the home to some of the oldest housing projects in Boston, including the West Broadway Housing Development, more commonly known as D-Street, Old Colony and the Mary Ellen McCormack (or Old Harbor, if you're from Southie). All three of these housing projects were a breeding ground for desperate kids, searching for an escape from their poverty stricken life. Unfortunately, many of these children saw crime and drug dealing as the quickest way to make their way out of the bricks, as they liked to call them.
Southie also began to gain notoriety in the late 1990's when Good Will Hunting was released nationwide. Overnight, Southie became known for its loyalty between friends, as portrayed by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. It was the first time America would be introduced to the white ghetto, becoming more and more fascinated by its lure each time a new film was released about Southie and its residents. Over the years, Hollywood would continue to produce films that glamorized Southie and its gangs.
This story is not about gangsters. There are no Hollywood stars or massive budgets. This is a true story, told by real people who have been affected by the drug epidemic that continues to bring Southie residents to their knees. This is a story about a tiny little pill, Oxycontin, that hit the streets in 1998 and caused an onset of addiction in children and young adults, and the flood of heroin that resulted. This is about the thousands of overdoses that took over Southie, as well as the Greater Boston area, causing pain and suffering to so many families, over a seemingly uncontrollable epidemic.
When you are a child, you are often told, the sky's the limit but what happens to a child who lives in a world with no skies?

Boston Massachusetts Tunnels
The Thomas P. Tip O'Neill Jr. Tunnel is a highway tunnel built as part of the Big Dig in Boston, Massachusetts. It carries the Central Artery underneath downtown Boston, and is numbered as Interstate 93 (I-93), U.S. Route 1 (US 1), and Route 3. It roughly follows the route of the old elevated Central Artery, though the northbound entrance, at the corner of Kneeland Street and Atlantic Avenue, is somewhat east of the southbound exit (at Kneeland and Albany streets) to allow for a reconfigured interchange with the Massachusetts Turnpike. It runs from the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge at its north portal—barely 165 feet (50 m) east of the TD Garden sports facility's eastern corner—to Boston's Chinatown at its south portal. The tunnel is named for Tip O'Neill, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
